Opening a PLM can of worms

There are many complexities that can arise when implementing a new PLM system, from projects going over budget and schedule to excessive customization and large data migration efforts. To address these issues, an organization should rapidly introduce some out-of-the-box PLM elements to understand what may not work, develop a campaign to get business users onboard with the new system and processes, and appoint someone responsible for overseeing key PLM functions like CAD files, bills of materials, and engineering change orders. It is also important to provide training to help users understand how to store and manage data, streamline change processes, control costs, and support other business areas.

Opening a PLM can of worms
- 1. There are various areas of PLM complexity, from a big-bang waterfall approach with budget and schedule overruns, excessive customization and huge legacy data migration, to mention some of the large issues! Let's open-up a few "cans of worms" to start dealing with them:
- 2. 1.Talk to the business and rapidly introduce some OOTB elements and have them jump-in. Let's find out what's unworkable, before gathering excessive “AS-IS won't change” processes
- 3. 2. Develop a "hearts & minds" campaign to onboard the business. You'll need your designers, CAD operators, manufacturing engineers, BOM operators, procurement, sales, service, support all onboard with the system & processes. Find your ambassadors with influence among the designers, manufacturing planners and sales 1st
- 4. 3. In the PLM world, you need someone responsible for the program across 3D CAD files management, BOMs, ECO control and transfer to manufacturing.
- 5. 4. Education & training: how engineers and CAD designers store file, revisions and related data | how to speed up change process and to optimize ECO process | how to control product cost | how to deliver accurate BOMs | how to provide support for sales and services.
