Open Source Products to Platforms!
Read a description and download it in various formats here: http://bloglz.de/business-models-for-open-source-hardware-open-design/
This is an extended version of the presentation I did at the Open Hardware Summit 2014 in Rome, during the open hardware business models workshop I facilitated.
It features an overview and tentative typology of open hardware business models, based on observation and interviews of project, using the business model canvas as a reference tool during the analysis.
This is an updated release:
First, I released the Platform Design Canvas alone, then I added the Platform Motivations Matrix to a newly born "toolkit" made of different tools (most of them are still in the making).
Here you can find a context post with a step by step guide to using this preliminary version of the toolkit: http://bit.ly/PDToolkitGuide
Making Money From Open Source HardwareDavid Mellis
A discussion of the business models around open-source hardware. Discusses the value chain in the manufacturing and distribution of Arduino boards and other products. Draws some broader implications and raises general questions about the topic.
Design Strategies to galvanize EcosystemsSimone Cicero
Crafting a power "Shaping Strategy" and galvanize an entire ecosystem to join a platform for collaborative value creation is the new strategy to transform markets in the XXIst century.

Digital Evolutions: Startups, Platforms and EcosystemsSimone Cicero
This presentation was first released as Lecture in two Startup Accelerators lately. The presentation recaps on several digital trends and correlates them with Platform Design, previously covered in the record breaking "Future Proof Design" presentation available here: http://www.slideshare.net/Meedabyte/future-proof-design-and-the-platform-design-canvas.
In search for new ideas to frame Platform Design as a discipline in a more global discourse regarding the digital market, I went in search of complementary theories: most of this research have been consolidated in this lecture
In parallel, the Platform Design canvas is transforming into a more comprehensive Toolkit. See context here: http://wp.me/plmpp-uG

Becoming platforms: Harnessing the power of communities, beyond crowd-sourcing and openness.
This lecture was given on request to the Chamber of Commerce of Forlì-Cesena.
The original topic was "crowdsourcing" but it's now pretty obvious that there's no such thing as crowdsourcing anymore.
Indeed crowdsourcing is still an old-fashioned way of looking at peers and producers (exploitation): the switch that all businesses and organizations must undertake now is that towards 100% collaborative organization, which relates with peers and users in a co-creative way, becoming an "enabler". Open Prototyping - An early stage process modelDrew Hemment
An early stage process model for open prototyping – Version 1.0.
FutureEverything has developed a model we call open prototyping. Our labs create concepts and prototypes that spark imagination and ask questions about the implications of new technology. Ideas can then be demonstrated at the scale of a city through our festival.
Open prototyping is to develop and test a concept or process through input of external contributors. Our projects are open to many contributors and also are often made with a public audience in mind. They benefit from the co-creation of many external contributors and the interface to a real public.

Produsage and Beyond: Exploring the Pro-Am InterfaceAxel Bruns
Staff Seminar
Thursday 29 Oct., 2-4 p.m.
Seminar Room, Journalism & Media Research Centre, 1-3 Eurimbla St (corner High St), Randwick
The concept of produsage (Bruns 2008) describes the user-led collaborative approach to content creation which is prevalent in open source, citizen journalism, and the Wikipedia, as well as many other social media spaces. While many produsage projects have emerged initially to challenge dominant players in industry, their successful establishment as viable and sustainable alternatives also opens the door for an exploration of manageable cooperative arrangements between industry and community. Many challenges remain for such Pro-Am (Leadbeater & Miller 2004) models, however - not least an often deep-seated sense of mutual distrust -, and successful Pro-Am models may be most likely to succeed when sponsored by trusted third parties (public broadcasters, NGOs). This presentation explores pitfalls and possibilities in the Pro-Am space.

UX Research & Platform Ecosystem Design - Archetypes in Sustainability Transf...Renzo D'andrea
Today's challenges are interconnected just like in biology an ecosystem embraces multiple elements to keep adjusting. Community building business model is the opportunity to think with a systemic approach. In this workshop I explain how systemic approach has been adopted in the team. Also I introduce the three mindsets derived from archetypes, along with the interdisciplinary work inspired by Carolina’s (https://www.linkedin.com/in/carolinaj... ) approach. As result we navigated our understanding to research the ecosystem needs. In the UX research strategy we applied a ‘Customer Journey Mapping’ exercise that helped to align the team towards co-creation and inclusiveness. Finally, this tool contextualize how to interact with different actors and the communities in the ecosystem.

HighEdWeb 2017 - Unbundle Your Institution: Building a Web EcosystemEric Sembrat
Stop me if you have heard queries like these before:
Why am I using {Product X} to build a {Task Y} website?
Why am I rebuilding {Product X} to act like {Product Y}?
Why can’t this {organizational asset} be flexible for {Product Y} instead of just {Product X}?
Questions like these highlight an issue we face more in our day-to-day work in the ever-evolving web: content management system tunnel vision. Sometimes, our organization gets fixated on a particular platform or content management system, even when alternatives and successors exist. And over time, this stagnation hinders growth, expansion, trends, technologies, and eventually even adoption.
In this presentation, I will cover the value of creating a web system ecosystem in your institution, department, unit, or organization. I'll cover:
On-Campus CMS Usage Today - Discussion on scenarios where a CMS is being reconfigured to meet a demand it wasn’t meant to do, and the fallout from said reconfiguration. Why this approach is expensive in the long haul.
What is a Web CMS Ecosytem? - Discussion on a different look at a system, where CMSs are provisioned and recommended for uses and have affordances and tradeoffs.
Change the Community Mindset - Let’s consider the growth, explosion, and fall of CMS systems and stay on top of trends, platforms, and best-practices.
Exploring Ecosystem Adoption- Discussion on changing mindsets, running pilot studies, experimentation, exploration, and research to determine organizational web makeup, goals, needs, and expectations.
Angle Your Institutional Assets - Discussion on side-effects of this move, which may include CMS-agnostic branding and style guides, flexible and scalable plugins and campus application integrations for each system, and pain-minimized migration paths between services and applications.
Business Model Canvas vs Lean Canvas vs One-Page Lean StartupRod King, Ph.D.
The Business Plan is the traditional document that established businesses and non-profit organizations as well as startups, entrepreneurs, and innovators use to document their strategy and tactics for achieving goals in projects. However, the traditional business plan is voluminous, complex, filled with grand hypotheses (vision), and becomes increasingly irrelevant as a project proceeds in the real world.
In recent years, many individuals and organizations have been abandoning the traditional business/strategic plan in favor of one-page documents that present project plans, business models, and ecosystems. The most common one-page project summaries are currently the tools of the Business Model Canvas, Lean Canvas, and One-Page Lean Startup. This presentation briefly introduces and compares these three business model (ecosystem) mapping tools especially using the workflow of 8 activities for Lean Startup Project Management.
Which business model (ecosystem) mapping tool is your favorite? And why?
What other tools are you using for summarizing, presenting, and managing your project plans as well as business models and ecosystems?
We look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards.
Crowdfunding Beyond money: sharing Goteo’s challenges with NestaOlivier Schulbaum
Goteo has been invited by Nesta (independent charity that works to increase the innovation capacity of the UK) in order to present Goteo and our experience after three initial years of activity. Coinciding with the launching of the report “ Understanding Alternative Finance: The UK Alternative Finance Industry Report 2014 ” by Nesta and Cambridge University, we are sharing today how do we put innovative and impact crowdfunding into practice, at the event Alternative Finance in the UK: what we know and where it's going.
Because we think that crowdfunding campaigns are not only about money: they are about having and nourishing an engaged and supportive community around your project. And so, people crowdfund but also crowdsource. They can give projects their time, materials, information, advice and other valuable resources without expecting anything in exchange, but the fact of becoming part of the project itself as a real community (sometimes taking part even in the production process of the projects).
The Harvard Humanitarian Initiative research team led by Jennifer Chan and Melissa Tully, supported by the Knight Foundation, conducted evaluation research. Over the year, they interviewed Kenyan Ushahidi deployers, specifically those participating in Uchaguzi, Unsung Heros and Building Bridges, and had community members help shape the research deliverables. Evaluation to action was a key goal of the project. Their research resulted in the creation of three toolboxes to assist users in the various stages of their Ushahidi deployments: Assessment, Implementation and Outputs.
Platforms are everything on which we create. They are a trade show, a website, a river, a floating city, even a skateboard. Platforms are the base upon which we all business, and what we build to exchange value by creating opportunities for all kinds of interactions. The ability to design a platform that successfully scales value creation for all participants involved is a task fit for architects.
To become scalable, the platform must exploit digital angles to offer new benefits to its users. It must create a delivery system that can be reconfigured into different contexts, and do so by creating an innovative business model.
Let’s first understand platforms.
If you are just starting your Confluence journey, THE GO-TO MANUAL FOR CONFLUENCE NEWBIES is the best source to start with. It introduces Confluence as a powerful technical documentation platform in modern teams. Confluence is the combination of two great features – it enables the creation of rich, qualitative content as well as giving all the employees the chance to contribute to the process. This book will guide you through these important stages and assist with any challenges you might face during the process. You will learn how content is created in Confluence and the main ways to collab- orate on work there.
Platforms and Microservices - Is There a Middle Ground for Engineers and Tech...Dialexa
Your technology strategy is the key to executing successful digital transformation. But if you talk to engineers and strategists, there are opposing views on the best way to leverage technology.
While engineers might push for a pure microservices architecture, strategists may take a step back and consider the long-term implications of that decision on the enterprise. Is there a middle ground?
Our own VP of Engineering, Samer Fallouh, and Head of Technology Strategy, Russell Villemez, discussed this topic to see if there was some middle ground to drive innovation more effectively.

-Imagine this is your
platform
-People copy and share
parts
-Roles for them appear –
they have an interesst in
the platform
-The platform grows and
becomes stronger
10. Product/Things as a platform
Opening up can give other people/stakeholders a perspective
to gain an income for themselve and sustain their lives.
ROLES appear for them.
Those actors stabelize the platform and its core-product and
bring it forward. -> Growth.
A more complex and richer ecosystem around the product
or service can emerge. It becomes more valuable.
Design and support this in a way, that you can make your
share – an income for yourself.
„The risk of bankruptcy of such open-movement businesses is reduced because the
fruits of their work remain in the commons and therefore remain as a permanent
base for recovering the open business, even in their most critical situations.“
