3. Social Context
The digital and mobile transformation in political communication (Antoni Gutiérrez-
Rubí 2015)
A new mobile reality.
Individuals are experiencing an extension of their memory. Today, we can storage our
whole life and take it with us everywhere using a mobile device (cellphone or tablet).
Not only talking, but also walking, eating, and sleeping close to mobile devices.
Our cellphones became our own extensions. Small seize devices with endless access to
information, data, and functions.

5. New Social
Context
Most research deals with computer-based learning, it does
not address the impact of mobile devices in education.
On occasion, many students might use their cellphones to
connect with their online class. Sometimes to receive and
send messages (e-mails and course announcements).
Sometimes to post comments using webcam.
A mobile device is more personal than a computer.
Understanding this new trend and reality helps faculty to
understand students.
A new social behavior and context. “Digital native”
7. Administration & Policies
Fostering faculty’s acceptance of online delivery methods is critical for institutions that
consider online learning to be a key part of their strategic plan.
Offer a clear path (policy) for Faculty.
The need of an online policy in the strategic plan.
Getting faculty involved in the process. (Pope Wingo et al. 2017)
Training, support, and mentoring for faculty.
8. Teaching online
• Online Pedagogy? Transmedia
Education?
• Communications as part of an
online pedagogy.
• Research paper or Google paper?
• Moving into digitally interactive
environments is challenging for
faculty.
• A liquid pedagogy “Liquid
Modernity” (Zygmunt Bauman)
9. Synchronous
vs
Asynchronous
Hybrid &
Transmedia
Synchronous: chat and videoconferencing in real
time. Interaction is instant. It is very similar to a
virtual classroom.
Asynchronous: coursework delivered via
web/webcam, email, announcements, voice
messages, etc., using forums. Students can
complete coursework in different moments
within a time frame.
Most Social Media/Platforms (Facebook,
Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, WhatsApp) display
both features. Users can interact using
synchronous/asynchronous tools.
