Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats containing multiple double bonds, with the first bond located at the third carbon atom. DHA is critical for brain and eye development in infants, and preterm infants are especially vulnerable if they do not get enough DHA. Studies show preterm infants fed formula with added DHA had improved visual function compared to those without. For bipolar disorder, one study found consuming high amounts of EPA and DHA led to significantly longer remission times than placebo.
