The ancient Olympic games started in 776 BC in southwest Greece and included wrestling, boxing, long jump, throwing the javelin and discus, and chariot racing. Only men and boys were allowed to participate. The modern Olympic games were revived in Athens in 1896 by Pierre de Coubertin and have since included both summer and winter games with various sports.
