Editor's Notes

  1. It truly is in these last few years that the speed with which technology has moved, has left many of our heads spinning trying to understand the nature of these changes. This video, produced by a company called Socialnomics from last May, shares some extraordinary stats and facts that truly bring home the relevance of the fundamental shift in the way we communicate.
  2. The basic premise we all need to get our head’s around, collectively as institutions in this brave new world of social media is that we no longer control the message. Not only don’t we control it, if we try to impose it on our audiences without listening first, the consequences can be quite counterproductive to say the least.
  3. The headlines from the Middle East from Morocco to Oman and nearly everywhere in between reflect exactly what can happen when those who for so long had lived under authoritarian regimes, now found their voice through social media. Despite all the efforts in Tunisia and Egypt (and more recently Libya) to “turn off” the internet, or restrict certain platforms from operating, the photos, videos, posts, and tweets got out to the wide world. No longer can a tree fall in the woods without anyone hearing it.
  4. Even in China that has some of the most restrictive internet access laws in the world, where escaping over the Great Firewall of China is a major accomplishment, these recent protest have demonstrated the fear the Chinese government has of these kind of Jasmine revolutions spreading to their shores, when a planned peaceful demonstration in Beijing was summarily squashed in advance by a massive security cordon around the meeting area for that event.
  5. From the ridiculous….but only just. Our advisers in Saudi recently shared stories that the royal family in Saudi has just upped everyone’s wages so that they wouldn’t be as motivated to protest
  6. To the Miraculous… social media whether in Iran during their 2009 elections with the #Iran on Twitter, to the Tunisian street vendor who set himself on fire and the video of which was on Facebook & YouTube globally within seconds, to the recent earthquakes in Haiti, Chile, and now Japan—social media can help celebrate the struggle for freedom, to helping loved ones find each other when regular communications were impossible.
  7. At EducationUSA, our marketing team operates under 5 simple rules for communicating with our various audiences. We need to know where they spend their time, whether that be students, or US higher ed folks. We commit for the long haul in terms of content and staff time. We realize we must continue to feed the need for information. We must listen to the conversations and the needs of our audiences. And we must know how our brand, our name is being used in the wide world.
  8. Get connected, be relevant, stay involved, Keep them coming back for more—people use these networks regularly, get their news sometimes exclusively, and can make decisions based on what they see, read, and hear on social media platforms. Interestingly, all these companies founded in the US now enjoy their greatest growth overseas, and do so with foreign language versions of their content & platforms. Any guesses which language after English has the most Tweets? Portuguese.

  13. Live Where Your Audiences Live. While Facebook’s global quest for dominance continues toward having 1 billion members, other countries have different platforms that reign supreme at the moment, or as is the case in some parts of Africa, have not yet full embraced/or are able to embrace social media.
  14. As it relates to the college age demographics—we all know Facebook started on a college campus, and has been immortalized in the Social Network film, and continues to dominate college students’ lives in the U.S. The US is a fairly mature Facebook market (where the fastest growing segment of new FB users are the baby boomers), where recent data suggested that 71% of all internet users in the US are on Facebook in a given month. Outside the U.S. these numbers suggest in some countries, these are 10 of the top 25 most populous countries on Facebook (who all have seen quadruple digit growth in the last 24 months), where with the exception Brazil, nearly 2/3rd of their current FB users are in the college age demographic.
  15. From these top 25 countries outside the US on Facebook-looking at the traditional college-age cohort between 16-25, banner ads to that demographic would get your message/institution in front of over 212 million people. A month ago when I ran this same list, the total was just over 190 million. Live Where Your Audiences Live.
  16. Dr. Rahul Choudaha, at World Education Services, recently talked about social media’s critical role in international education, “The student is trying to minimize risk, and to get very authentic communication, driven by peer-to-peer communication, and by people who have experience with the product and the institution, so there is much higher credibility.” Listen, Listen, Listen.
  17. The VOA Student Union bloggers (all volunteers, half American, half international), Manitou Heights, David Comp’s IHEC, and my Marketing EducationUSA cover a wide range of international ed topics via social media. I encourage you all to follow our blogs and Twitter feeds, if you aren’t on them already.
  18. Our growth at EducationUSA in the years to come will be through broadening our outreach particularly through social media platforms like our EdUSA Connects sessions. These web meetings help international students through the 5 Steps to Study in the US. They are recorded on our site are also podcasted on iTunes. Through this new platform, we will exponentially be expanding the number of students with whom we can share the value of studying in the US, and show them paths toward making their dreams a reality. To that end, in our network in the last half of 2010, our centers and our global platforms connected with over 600,000 students via social media.
  19. I’ve found this book to be an excellent primer for folks new to social media, and/or those who are looking for grounded arguments to convince the institutional powers that be social media can no longer be ignored as a legitimate path toward achieving institutional mission critical goals. Here our some useful feed addresses on international ed topics to assist those taking the plunge on Twitter.
