This lesson plan discusses treaties between Native American tribes and the U.S. government from the 15th-19th centuries, and how differing views of land ownership led to conflicts. It will teach students about the treaty process and specific treaties signed with the Oceti Sakowin (Seven Council Fires) in South Dakota, such as the 1851 and 1868 Fort Laramie treaties. While treaties aimed to reduce tensions, over time they became a way for tribes to keep portions of their lands and sovereignty as settlers and the U.S. grew in power and broke treaty agreements.
