When considering observations, they should be skilful and well planned; though it suggests
'That practitioners should document children's progress and performance in writing, photographs and/or on video/audio tape.' (Siraj–Blatchford, 2002)
Children are observed in a number of situations to gain a holistic view of their development. Observations can be planned or spontaneous. There are
two types of observation types, participant and non–participant.
Participant observation are carried out while you are playing and working with a child, spontaneous are where you would notice something happening
which shows an interest, and some will be planned (non–participant) with there are no interaction and practitioners will stand back and observe.
Within the non–participant observations this includes narrative, check list tracking, target child and time–sampling. Narrative observations are common
observation techniques used within early year settings. Narrative observations were chosen based on the detailed information that can be taken through

The school I went to visit was Public School 69. It was my little brothers elementary school. The reason I chose the school, was because I remember
seeing him happy every time he came home from kindergarten. Every day he would come home and have a different project he did in class to

I learned the day before my visit, Miss Suzy threw a pizza party for the children. The day of my visit they were going to make their own individual
pizzas (I did not get to view that part of the day). I noticed that during circle time, two children seemed uninterested had wandered off. Miss Suzy did
not do anything about it, she just let them be. I thought that was wrong of her because the two children were not being involved. The children could
of already known what they were speaking about. If that was the case she should of given them some work to do. When circle time was over, Miss
Suzy asked each child which part of the room they wanted to play in. Students chose dramatic play, arts and crafts, reading, and playing on the
computer. Miss Suzy walked around each group asking them questions, expanding their imaginations. Morrison states "that teachers work with
gingival children, small groups" (2003, p.232). Watching Miss Suzy, you can see she really enjoys what she does. She never once ignored a student
who went up to her. She seemed genuily interested when the children shared stories with her. She always welcomed them with a hug when walking
into the room in the morning to begin their day, and the children would come in running to hug her. Section C When the children walked into the

Observation: October 7th, 2011 – oak court Mall – 2:45pm to 4:15pm I walked into the Oak Court Mall from the second level entrance to observe the
young people of today. As I entered the mall, my first thought was that watching young people surely could not generate an entire three to five page

Response: It is a very rainy night tonight and I am immediately aware that the rain has not stopped the flow of people within the mall. There are
people continually walking in with raincoats and umbrellas dripping. As I look around, I realize that the three groups I observed last week are
probably not here tonight. I honestly think I would recognize them due to how much they stood out to me on my last visit. It did not take long
before I was hit with that same sense of sadness I experienced last Saturday. All of the young kids and some of the adults gave me the impression of
a desire for attention. Everyone wanted to be noticed in some way which was obvious by the clothes and accessories they all wore. I even saw a
few mothers whose clothing was not any different from their teenage daughters. The girls I see here this evening are young teens who are wearing
too much makeup trying to be seen by the young boys who are wearing expensive sneakers and saggy pants down around their buttocks. A few of the
girls I see are young mothers pushing baby strollers and conversing about the latest fashion. One young girl I see is pushing a newborn in a stroller
