Culture and Society - Unit 2 introduction

Multiculturalism in the classroom a presentation

Education has evolved greatly over thousands of years, from early informal teachings passed through oral tradition to today's widespread systems of formal education. Some key developments include ancient Egyptian temples schools in 3000 BC, the first schools in China in 2000 BC, and schools established by Plato and Aristotle in Greece in 387 and 355 BC. The printing press in 1450 and the internet in the late 1990s dramatically increased access to information and learning resources. While most nations now aim to provide education for all, many parts of the world still struggle to make even basic education universally available.
Our school
St Angela's Ursuline School is a Catholic girls' school in East London that has around 1,350 students in years 7-11 and a mixed sixth form. The student population reflects the diverse Catholic population of the local borough, with 90% coming from ethnic minority backgrounds. The school day starts at 8:45am with registration or assembly and includes 5 hourly lessons in subjects like math, English, science, and languages, as well as break time and extracurricular activities like sports teams, clubs, fundraising events, and international trips and exchanges.
Open House
The International Institute is hosting an open house to showcase its English program, American cultural studies program, and library offerings. The English program offers classes for children at different levels and locations, as well as exam preparation courses for adults. American cultural studies explores US culture, values, and identities through literature, art, and film. Courses are intended for advanced English learners age 18+ and no prior knowledge is required. Library resources are also available to support learning.
