Our Body is Like a Car
Nutrients
Nutrients are components that
we get from plants or animals
and these component contain
some ingredients that are
needed by our body
There are six types of nutrients:
1. Carbohydrates
What are carbohydrates?
main source of
ENERGY for our body
How much do we need?
50-60% of our daily intake
should come from
carbohydrates
providing 4 calories of
energy per gram
Types of Carbohydrates
Simple Carbohydrates
 Function: Provide
quick energy
Complex Carbohydrates
 Function: Provide
long-term energy
2. Fats
What are fats?
• The body’s main form of
stored energy
Functions of Fat
 Source energy
 Insulate the body
 Cushions & protects vital
organs
Source of fats
Fats aren’t all bad!
 Fats keep our skin soft
 Fat can Soluble vitamins A, D, E, K
 Great source of energizing fuel
3. Protein
What are proteins?
Part of every cell, tissue,
and organ in our bodies.
Function of proteins
 Support the growth of the
body
 Build and repair muscles
& tissues
 Provide energy
Type’s of protein

VEGETABLE
SOURCE PROTEINS
4. Vitamins
What are vitamins?
nutrients needed in very
small amounts
Functions
 Regulate body
functions
HOW WE CAN GET THE VITAMINS...???
5. Minerals
What are minerals?
Natural elements needed in
small amounts
Functions
 Regulate body processes
 Help for healthy bones &
muscles
6. Water
Functions
 Lubricates and
cushions joints
 Regulates body
temperature
 Soluble vitamins B
and C
 Help metabolism
process
Drink 8 glasses of
water daily!
Let’s doing a simple experiment
Test for Carbohydrate
Content
 You
Needs
 Work steps: drops the betadine in the rice and
bread
A view purple – blue - black, it indicates
presence of carbohydrates in the food item
 You needs
Test For Fat Content
Work steps : apply oil on the paper and hold the
paper
is looks transparently ?
IF oil in the paper look transparent shows
that the food item contains fat
 You needs:
Work step: drop the biuret in the egg solution in
test tube
Test For Protein
Content
LOOK
TEST FOR PROTEIN
If the color change
violet, it’s presence
protein
If the color change
blue, it’s not presence
protein

Editor's Notes

  • #3 Our bodies are like cars. They get us from point A to point B. Some of us may be porsche 911’s on the outside. Some of us may be station wagons. But we all need to take car of that car because it is the car we have right now. How do cars run? Fuel. Just like cars run on fuel, our bodies run on fuel. Food.
  • #8 Slower to digest than carbohydrates Demo – bring in types of oils, butter, pic of meat with fat Insulates: fat layer under the skin protects the body when temperatures change Cushions/protects: organs are cushioned in thin layers of fat to prevent them from slipping around inside of us, the fats absorbs shock (like on a roller coaster they don’t move)
  • #11 Protein drinks – increased protein helps build muscle Our body has about 100 trillion cells and each cell has thousands of different proteins that help the cell function Like the engine of a car – tons of different parts do separate jobs to make the engine run. Ex: hair, nails, hemoglobin in our blood (carries oxygen), antibodies
  • #13 like vitamin A helps with your vision, vitamin K helps with your blood. Vitamins make it possible for other nutrients to be digested – AKA BIG deal!!! Does not provide energy, their main role is to regulate
  • #17 3 people = water 1 person = head 2 people = arms 1
