Nutcracker Music Analysis
The Nutcracker had a wide variety of instruments it consists of 2 or more harps, double basses,
cellos, violas, violins, a rattle, 2 trumpets, cymbals, 3 flutes, 2 piccolos, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, a bass
clarinet, 4 horns, 2 bassoons, 3 trombones, a tuba, a tam tam, a military drum and a glockenspiel.
Two large elements that are unique to this piece are the style of the music and the dynamics. The
style of the music because, the song was unique for Russia and added a tint of joy to the cymphony.
Other songs of that time were focused more on bass depth more than pleasure to the youth.
Dynamics because, it features sudden high pitch at little notice and unexpected low pitches. The
high and low pitches were unique for the style of music. The style ... Show more content on

Peter began piano lessons at age 5. By age 8 he could read music as well as his teacher. Peter

Language Quests-Personal Narrative
After I logged in I noticed Matt was already setting up, thinking nothing out of the ordinary I went
back to finding a long, but not tedious quest that hopefully would take us most of the night. I
thought a language quest might be the key, one with lots of puzzles and wordplay for Matt and then
some foreign language and classic English for me. What struck me most looking back now is that
something was not right as Matt set up. ~–~ "Crap," Matt whispered under his breath. "Everything
all right Matt?" I asked, leaning out of the rig to look at him. "Yeah, just a small malfunction with
the little suckers on my glove. I think I fixed it," he replied. "Alright, that's good," I said. I went
back to looking for quests to do together as I noticed Matthew had finally joined. "What do you
want to do?" He asked. "I was thinking a language quest or something you and I might enjoy," I
replied, hoping he'd go for the language choice. "The language thing sounds fine, I think there's a
quest we outsourced out in Yert that dealt with languages. Do you maybe want ... Show more

He wore a black suit that accented the broadness of his shoulders and appealed to his diminutive
stature. It had silver buttons decorated with a pistol and sword, crossing at their handles. He wore
three handkerchiefs in his breast pocket, a single silver, black and blue one. Wrapping around his

must have been for decoration, he had no use for guns when he was that powerful. Over the top of
his suit and gun holder was a high collar woolen coat that fell just below his knee. He also wore
black gloves. Standing with his arms crossed I noticed the skinny, black walking stick he allowed to

Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment
God Answers the Questions Presented by Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and
Punishment
In Dostoevsky's novels pain and some heavy burden of the inevitability of human suffering and
helplessness form Russia. And he depicts it not with white gloves on, nor through the blisters of the
peasant, but through people who are close to him and his realities: city people who either have faith,
or secular humanists who are so remote from reality that even when they love humanity they despise
humans because of their own inability to achieve or to create paradise on earth. His novels The
Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment are best examples of the poisonous effect of such
ideals on the common man. The rebellion of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That is not the love that is directed towards the humanity as a whole, but towards the individual:
"Strive to love your neighbor actively and indefatigably" (II, 4). For Dostoevsky such love is a false
one and he presents it through such characters as Rakitin, Perkhotin and even Luzhin:
Consciousness of life is superior to life, knowledge of the laws of happiness is superior to
happiness––that is what we must fight against. (The Dream of a Ridiculous Man , p. 382)
One of greatest evils for Dostoevsky are the so–called liberals who "love humanity more than an
individual man." Yet he does not represent their behavior as genuinely evil . Their hate towards
humanity arises exactly from the opposite: love. Secular humanists see so much evil, crime and
inhumanity, they cannot stop it so they rebel. Ivan Karamazov and his rebellion are purely of that
kind. He is not vile, he just cannot understand that there might be a solution for such suffering,
especially in the case of children who are innocent in Christianity. That is why Ivan asks:
Love life more than the meaning of it? (II, 3)
Ivan as any average intellectual, wants to know. To know the meaning of life for him is more
important than to actually do something about the human suffering. Ivan forgets that one human life
is as important as the entire humanity. For him humanity is merely an abstraction which happen to
be surrounding him.

Essay Comparing Kurtz And Macbeth
The Horror!
Osica Pasachhe
The conditions and antecedents that caused Kurtz and Macbeth's deterioration are different. Kurtz
was forced to face the evil of his unraveling, inner primitive self when in the jungle, whereas
Macbeth encounters evil in his mission to murder Duncan and become king. Similarly, both Kurtz
and Macbeth begin their story as honorable and admired men but as their story unfolds they both
lose sight of themselves and fall into the arms of evil. Their actions (once they obtain power) are
also incredibly alike; both make comparable sacrifices to fulfill their goal, and both have an
impressive ambition that leads them to their success but also to their downfall. In the play Macbeth
and the novella Heart of Darkness, Macbeth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!/ All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!" (Shakespeare

demonstrates to Macbeth and the audience that he will become king and the Thane of Cawdor, thus
beginning the whirlwind of tragedy and murders. A little while later Ross (the king's messenger)
enters and brings the news to Macbeth that he has been given the title of the Thane of Cawdor. He is
shocked to learn that the first part of his prophecy had already come true, which enabled him to
believe that what the witches said may hold truth. Learning this instills a treacherous thought in his
mind and he begins to imagine being king, which enables him a sense of what it would feel like to
be in position of such grand power. Once he had his taste, Macbeth hungered for more, becoming
addicted on the high of being powerful. He was driven by his lust for power and eventually acceded

Analysis: Why The Teen Brain Is Drawn To Risk
What do you think when you hear the word "teenager"? Most people think of teenagers as
pugnacious and restless human beings. Their rebellious and rambunctious behavior usually leads
people to believe this. Teens tend to participate in jeopardous activities such as dangerous driving,
binge–drinking, or fighting that could land them in serious trouble, the ER or the police station.
Although engaging in these exercises is strongly frowned upon, some studies show that most of
these actions cannot be controlled. Adolescents are drawn to risky acts due to specific messengers in
the brain, peer pressure and their odd methods of apprehending the outcomes of a situation.
Teenagers value riskier or more dangerous activities because of the increased ... Show more content

Research depicts that teenagers fail to notice risks in a situation and completely process other ones
when adults thoroughly examine the consequences and focus on the ending outcome. An article by
Maia Szalavitz titled "Why the Teen Brain is Drawn to Risk" suggests that teens engage in drunk
driving because they don't completely scan the outcome of the situation, but they fully comprehend
the risk of partaking in other activities that adults would immediately dismiss after looking at the
possible outcomes such as Russian Roulette(Source F). This shows that adults quickly decide on
seemingly dangerous actions because they view the finishing outcome of that activity while teems
envision the whole activity and still choose to participate. On top of that, young adults are intrigued
by unknown risks rather than known ones. Chris Sharma, a famous rock climber, mentions that he is
"looking for new, hard climbs that no one has even thought possible" in a video named "Who Is
Chris Sharma?"(Source G). This suggests that, as a young adult, he searches for climbs that have a
high risk level that is unknown or ambiguous. Because adolescents have distinct judgment than that

Napoleon Bonaparte’s Invasion of Russia Essay
Napoleon's Invasion of Russia
Napoleon Bonaparte's invasion of Russia was a major factor in his downfall. In 1812, Napoleon,
whose alliance with Alexander I had disintegrated, launched an invasion into Russia that ended in a
disastrous retreat from Moscow. Thereafter, all of Europe, including his own allies, Austria and
Prussia, united against him. Although he continued to fight, the odds he faced were impossible. In
April 1814, Napoleon's own marshals refused to continue the struggle and stepped down from their
positions. During the actual Russian campaign, there were many key factors that greatly impacted
his downfall.
The largest army ever assembled for one single invasion was reduced to a mere fraction of its
original size. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The artillery and small arms were years behind that of France. The Russian army was a conscription
army, meaning that local farmers had to furnish a certain number of surfs for military service, as
opposed to a professional, trained army where the government supplies the soldiers with all of their
needs. An amazing half–million soldiers had enlisted in Napoleon's Grand Armée (Saglamer,
Beginning of the March). This was the largest army gathered for one single invasion. Russia's army
was out numbered 3:1 with only one hundred–seventy thousand soldiers. Not only was the Russian
army not well trained, they were also ill equipped. Napoleon recognized that it would be difficult
and extremely slow for Russia to mobilize her army due to her enormous size and weak
infrastructure. If Napoleon invaded now, he knew that he could be well into the Russian territory
before meeting any major opposition. On June 24, 1812, Napoleon began his fatal Russian
campaign. The Grand Armée, led by Napoleon, crossed the Nieman River, into Russia. On the
journey to Moscow, Napoleon met virtually no major opposition. The first stop in the campaign was
Kovono. Early into the campaign, the Grand Armée was affected by a colic epidemic that claimed
the life of nine thousand horses and thousands of soldiers (Web, Russian Embassy). This slowed the
pace of the army. Harsh weather conditions caused the dry roads to turn to mud, making it
extremely difficult to maneuver the

The Crimean War broke out in October 1853 with France and Britain declaring War in March 1854
against Russia. James enlisted in the 93rd Highlanders (which become the 93rd Foot Sutherland
Highlanders in 1861), a formidable group of nearly 1000 soldiers that left for the Crimea to fight in
the Battles at the Alma River and Balaklava. This regiment lived up to its motto: Without Fear; Do
Not Forget especially at Balaklava. Massively out numbered by the Russian cavalry, they were
commanded by Colin Campbell, who ordered them to form a line two deep and that "There is no

Troy's Avenge: The Battle Of Achilles
Troy's Avenge:
After the siege of Troy, the ruins and smolder of the devastation leave a limited number of survivors
homeless. One such Troyian is a young teenager named Qadir Khan. Qadir lost his entire family in
the siege. Qadir prayed to the gods for forgiveness and an ability for him to avenge his fallen

Who Is Catherine The Great
Biography of Catherine the Great
One of the most interesting, hard–working and powerful people to grace the pages of history during
the eighteenth century was Catherine II, Empress of Russia. Historians have not always been so
kind to her memory, and all too often one reads accounts of her private life, ignoring her many
achievements. The stories of her love affairs have been overly misinterpreted and can be traced to a
handful of French writers in the years immediately after Catherine's death, when Republican France
was fighting for its life against a coalition that included Russia.
Catherine was born Sophia Augusta Frederika of Anhalt–Zerbst on April 21, 1729 in Stettin, then
Germany, now Poland. Her father, Prince Christian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was at this time that Catherine, who had never felt more isolated, wrote: "I should have loved my
new husband, if only he had been willing or able to be in the least lovable. But in the first days of
my marriage, I made some cruel reflections about him. I said to myself: If you love this man, you
will be the most wretched creature on Earth. Watch your step, so far as affection for this gentleman
is concerned, think of yourself, Madame." The young couple settled down, but the marriage was a
miserable failure.
Catherine was disappointed with her marriage, but decided to stick it out and concentrate on
building herself a powerful group of allies. Catherine occupied herself with reading everything she
could lay her hands on. She discovered satisfaction in the works of Plato and Voltaire. Her interest
in the intellect caused an even greater distance between Peter and herself. The years passed and
there was still no heir in sight.
This of course irritated the Empress who wanted to secure a powerful dynasty, and could not do so
without the presence of a male heir. She thought it must be Catherine's fault because she was not
attracted to her husband. However, it was Peter that was not able to produce a male son, so
Elizabeth permitted an affair between Catherine and a Russian military officer named Serge
Saltykov. Catherine finally gave birth to a son, whom the Empress named Paul, on September 20,
1754. Peter accepted it as his

How Did Grigori Rasputin Change Russia
Jordan
In 1903, Grigori Rasputin arrived by train in St. Petersburg, Russia. He dressed very poorly and had
an awful stench to him. However, this did not stop him from becoming friends with the monks and
bishops of the churches around St. Petersburg. News quickly spread that Rasputin was a "powerful
holy man." However, he wasn't truly what he seemed. In reality, Rasputin was a lustful,
manipulative man who would stop at nothing to get what he wanted and to get rid of all those in his
way. This self proclaimed "holy man" was the one person who would impact the tsar and Russia so
greatly that he alone would change Russia's fate as a whole.

including the Prime Minister and Alexis's nurse. Newspapers around the city of St. Petersburg even
began printing articles on Rasputin's misbehavior. This led to the tsar and tsarina getting rid of those
who opposed Rasputin, even going as far as to ban all newspapers from making articles with even as
little as the name "Rasputin" in them. However, this did not stop newspapers from writing articles to
spread the word of Rasputin's misconduct. Suspicions of Rasputin began to rise. Despite all the talk
of Rasputin, Nicholas and Alexandra simply dismissed their complaints, refusing to lose their only
hope in the royal family continuing their rule of Russia. After all the commotion, Rasputin decided
it would be best to hold a pilgrimage to Palestine. He hoped that his situation with the Russian
people would settle before he returned. When he returned in 1911, tsar Nicholas requested that

Luciferianism In Illuminati
To proceed with, Illuminati really has a "religion", more known as a conviction framework, called
Luciferianism or Illuminism. Luciferianism roots from the word Lucifer, which is referred to by
numerous as Satan, the dull leader of the underworld. During the time spent completely
understanding the thinking for utilizing such a dim ruler as a name of a religion, one must first
comprehend the history. In the Bible, a story is told about Lucifer, the most elevated of the heavenly
attendants; yet, he was not fulfilled, and needed more. He needed to supplant God and endeavored
creating so as to do this the first resistance to him. God immediately exiled Lucifer from Heaven
and sent him, alongside one thirds of all blessed messengers away to the underworld. Lucifer, once
the great blessed messenger of light got to be Satan, abhorrent holy messenger of dimness (The New
Oxford Annotated Bible, Luke 10:18). This story clarifies how Illuminati needs the same Lucifer
did, the most power conceivable, which gave them the thought to utilize Luciferianism as their
convictions name.

manpower from the enemy's center. A young hussar rides up to him with a message. "Ney is ready."
The messenger says. He turns to his gunners and orders them to concentrate their fire on the

Analysis Of Chekhov 's ' The Brothers Karamazov '
Chekhov's use of allusion in "Misery" also stands in stark contrast to the works of other Russian
literary giants such as Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, whose works often featured deep themes revolving
around the aforementioned Christian thought. While a deep discussion on these themes is out of the
scope of this paper, perhaps one of the most obvious and contrasting examples can be found in
Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, which was published around 6 years before Chekhov wrote
"Misery". Towards the end of the novel, Father Zosima, a figure who acts as a mouthpiece for
Dostoevsky's own thoughts on religion, indirectly responds to the arguments of Ivan Karamazov,
who rejects God because of the existence of suffering innocents and other ... Show more content on

But Jonah is not humbled and reverent as Job is. Instead, "Jonah prayed to the Lord and said, 'O
Lord, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to
Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in
steadfast love, and relenting from disaster' (Jonah 4:2). Jonah refuses to simply accept God's
message, and instead challenges God to explain why he even had to go through his journey in the
first place. When God responds, the Book of Jonah simply ends, and we never hear from Jonah
again. The final image of Jonah is of him sitting under a wilting plant, fuming and wishing for an
end to his life. Thus Jonah himself is in fact one of the more miserable figures of the Bible. It is only
appropriate that Chekhov chose such an unorthodox figure, rather than someone like Job, to connect
to the misery of his protagonist. Jonah's questioning of God even when facing his literal presence is
also appropriate given Chekhov's own questioning of faith. Jonah, in a Chekhovian fashion, focuses
on the realities of what he had to go through, rather than being humbled and indulging in Job's deep,
yet clear–cut answers and happy ending. The allusion to Jonah in "Misery" serves only to introduce
a hint of Christian metaphysics into the story, providing Chekhov with an opportunity to deconstruct
its influence in society and in the works of his

Character Sketch Of Tolstoy
2–Tolstoy's Character. Tolstoy was a multi–dimensional man. In his long career he had been a
teacher and educational theorist, a philosopher and social critic, a successful farmer and
paterfamilias, a soldier, and a prophet. Above all, however, he was a great artist, and it is on his
fiction that his fame at present rests. The literary career of this "great writer of the Russian land" (as
his contemporary Turgenev called him) may be divided into three parts: the early period of literary
apprenticeship (1851–63), the period of the great novels (1863–77), and the later period of
preoccupation with the message of his religious teaching (1878–1910). The works of the early
period may be regarded as the "school" in which Tolstoy taught himself to write. He isolated the

His account focuses heavily on both sides' tactical successes and failures – from maneuvers in battle
to how they handled occupied territory. Before the French surrender, Pierre's brush with execution
becomes a cutting satire of French bureaucracy, which functions so badly that Pierre is nearly
executed simply because a general was interrupted while he was deciding Pierre's sentence.
However, the Russians also become objects of Tolstoy's critique. He depicts disorganization and a
lack of professionalism on both sides. The French failures are not limited to their ineffective
bureaucracy. "Since the battle of Borodino and the looting of Moscow," Tolstoy writes, "the French
army had borne within itself, as it were, the chemical conditions of its decomposition" Napoleon
and his generals seem to have good intentions they order their men not to loot and treat the Russians

The Pros And Cons Of Belize
There are about 1 billion instant messenger accounts that are active around the world and there are
currently 17 billion devices that are connected or related to the internet and the use of the internet
(Computer Freaks, 2014). We are living in the era of technology, the period noted by abundant
publication, consumption, and manipulation of information especially by computers and computer

our eyes and the brain. But is the technological era helping or harming our society? In this essay I

Therefore, to what extent is Belize coping with the technological era? On December 2014, the
Prime Minister Honorable Dean Barrow said that the year 2015 would be the year of technology
(Channel 5 Belize, 2014). As a result, on the month of February 2015, the Government issued 9,000
tablets to tertiary level students and as well provided free access to Wi–Fi in each park of the
country's municipalities. In addition, the Prime Minister also said that with the help of Koreans they
are making plans towards building a Technology University in Belmopan. It all sounds great, but
there are still plenty of drawbacks. Belize is second to lowest in Broadband Internet speed in the
Caribbean (Channel 5 Belize, 2015). As reported by a survey made by the International issues from
a Caribbean Perspective (ICT PLUS), Belize heads the list with the highest prices but lowest
download speed. Moreover, as reported in Forbes website when it comes to technology, Belize is
"currently dicey". The article goes on stating that "Belize has DSL but it isn't always easy to get,
service isn't that reliable and data speeds are relatively slow particularly against European
standards" (Enderle, 2012). Even though the Government gave tablets to students, there is a great
need of improvement in our Education system with better access of internet, printing services and
educational tools. Our Health sector also needs to adapt the new equipments that are available.

The, And Influences From Antonin Artaud 's First Manifesto
By using Don Taylor's translation of the Sophocles' written Antigone, and influences from Antonin
Artaud's First Manifesto, I hope to create a directorial concept which is interesting from both a
visual and auditory perspective.
My set will be the most important visual aspect of my production, and will be done on a proscenium
arch, however, the stage will need to be incredibly tall (around 7m), but can be on the same level as
the audience. On the stage, there will be four separate horizontal levels. The lowest level will be
around 1.5m tall, reaching from the ground up, 1.5m deep, and stretching across the entire stage.
This level will represent where Polynices body is kept, and will be filled with soil, fake blood,

Down stage right, there will be a ladder attached to the wall next to the stage, which will only be
used by Antigone, as she will be the only character who is permitted to move from level to level.
In terms of sound, I would use heavily electronic, distorted sound bites and surround sound in order
to affect the audience's sensibilities from all angles. By using sound electronically, I would hope that
there would be a greater capacity for creativity than using live instruments in the theatre.
Additionally, this would hopefully create a deeper effect on the audience, as they would not know
where the sound is coming from; there will be no clear source of sound. I would use sound effects
such as panning in order to distort the sound, making full use of surround sound equipment, and
therefore make the audience feel immersed in sound. The sound will fluctuate between having the
fft filter 'the club downstairs' on and off. This will give the sound a muffled effect, like it's almost
coming from another place at some points, in order to make 'utterly unusual sound properties' as
Artaud suggests. I would also ensure the seating is low enough for the audience members to have
their feet on the floor. This will ensure that they can always hear the vibrations of the music, adding
another way in which my production will directly impact the audience.
I will also be using light in order to maximize the contrasts between the four levels. In the

A Personalized Sergei Bodrov
A role in a movie is like a mirror that reflects an actor's personality. Some actors are capable of
playing certain roles but not others. If an actor can feel the role, he or she will play it naturally, as it
would resemble his or her life. Actors put their heart into playing, which gives them the model.
Through a role an actor connects to the audience who makes the final decision about the movie's
purpose; that is why it is very important to show this purpose correctly by playing it sincerely.
Personalization is a significant factor that can lead to the success or failure of a film. Sergei Bodrov

speak because his tongue is torn out. Second, he is shackled with leg shackles to Kostylin, the other
Russian soldier held hostage. The situation of insecurity and absence of freedom makes the
character alert and ready to stay alive by helping others. For example, Vanya fixed clocks for some
Chechens. After time has passed, the prisoners Vanya and Kostylin are forced to leave the house of
Abdul–Murat since Chechen fighters want them to work for them. The captives work finding mines
for the Chechen as guinea pigs to clear a road for the others to pass. However, the prisoners survive
the work zones and come back to the house of Abdul–Murat. The director of the movie increases the
tragedy by letting Vanya's mother know about the hostage situation. Her tears and pleads to Abdul–
Murat do not change his decision do her son. "Chechen elders have great influence, often acting as

Joyce Yang Research Paper
When Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Silver Medalist and piano superstar Joyce
Yang comes to my mind, I think of an artist who has the astounding ability to splash many
brilliant colors to a canvas in an engaging way that brings me awe. In fact, she is known as a
pianist who sees music in a colorful way, and she brings those feelings to her music through her
very unique style of interpretation and disposition. She also has a way of drawing the audience
into the engaging musical world that she is pouring out on stage in such a way that causes you to
forget where you are until the applause begins.
I had just that experience the other night when I decided to drop by the Honolulu Museum of
Art's acclaimed Doris ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Joyce Yang powerfully emoted those characteristics at the
piano by playing in a serious, commanding manner as though she were playing a Russian piano
concerto with broad chords. The piano greatly filled the theater through her very big sound
which blew away many of the pianists in attendance because the particular piano that she played
on has a heavy action. Although heaviness can easily lead to harshness on the piano, Joyce Yang
showed absolutely none of that at all and made her deep parts very emotionally heart–wrenching
instead which I really appreciated because it is not easy for some people to find that balance.
The third movement was played in a very light and carefree manner that felt very refreshing
because it gave the audience a break from the two previous fierce movements. It had a very
exotic, comedic, and dance–like feel to it which Joyce Yang presented in a very fun way that
had my fingers wanting tapping the rhythm. In the final movement, she showcased some
charming innocence that reminded me of the third movement's mischievousness. I thought
that this movement would continue to be lighthearted until the end, but I was very deceived.

The Mongols And The Mongol Rule
Notorious for their barbaric manners and their brutal tactics of invading and plundering, the
Mongols are commonly associated with a strictly negative reputation and despised for it. Although
this negative image remains associated with their history, with hindsight, historians have been able
to shed light on a positive perspective of the Mongols and their success creating the largest Empire
in world history. This paper will argue that although they were regarded as violent, invading
strangers and initially given few rights, their image in history has changed because the Mongols
were not simply a destructive people; despite lack of historical evidence and documentation,
historians have found they had many positive influences on Asia. Under Mongol rule there was an
improvement of status for many peoples, religious tolerance, and an increase in the trade of
products, culture, and knowledge. The Mongols are known for living a traditionally nomadic
lifestyle and their lack of permanent settlements or even a unified written language makes studying
them difficult for historians. Most of the surviving sources are found in foreign accounts of those
that they came into contact with. Once they began conquering and expanding their vast empire,
most of the permanent cities they created were later on eventually destroyed by their enemies. As a
result, the history of the Mongols is not very well documented. Additionally, most of the available
information on the Mongols is

Examples Of Perverted Language In Animal Farm
Animal Farm FRQ
1. Orwell uses perverted language throughout the book to make the leaders manipulate the other
citizens or animals in the book. An obvious example of this is how Napoleon uses Squealer as a
propaganda speaker. Napoleon uses Squealer special skill of talking to animals and getting them to
his side. Orwell also uses the example of Snowball."Snowball was a spy for Jones Napoleon said.
When we see him we just kill him" (Orwell 65). The animals at first don't believe it like Boxer by
saying that the animals gave him the Animal Hero First Class. However, the animals get swayed by
Squealer's propaganda and just go with what he says. The final example is when after Snowball

Boxer is especially the hard working class because he always woke up early for others and did extra
work. Fredrick is like Hitler and fights Animal Farm. Pilkington is also an enemy of Russia and is
helping Frederick. Snowball is like Leon Trotsky a smart politician that aims to improve Russia.
4.The political allegory in the book comes out in the book in many different places. The political
allegory is that Orwell mocks the Revolution that changed Russians into the USSR. The person who
changed it was a man named Karl Marx. He started a revolution that two different classes very
different. He thought that the world was a struggle of a social class and another. This example is
what Old Major didn't want to happen but happened because of Napoleon. He turned animals
against each other and slaughtered those who disagreed with what he thought was right.
5. Old Major had a dream in the first chapter which he prophesied things that would happen. He first
prophesied that the farm would be run by the animals and also that they would drive Jones out. He
however didn't prophesied that napoleon would take over control and kill many animals in the farm.
Old Major also let the animals sing Beast of England which is like the chant for the animals on
Animal Farm.
6. The narrator is the person who commentates and describes the book in a second hand experience

Blitzkrieg's Role In Ww2
The world changed forever on September 11, 1939 when German forces invaded Poland with
overwhelming military superiority and at a surprisingly quick pace. The World War II German
military tactic of Blitzkrieg was born that used a combination of tanks, infantry, and Luftwaffe dive
bombers to rapidly punch a hole in enemy lines. Blitzkrieg was first used in the invasion of Poland,
but was adopted as the common German invasion method across Europe and Russia. After
Germany's almost effortless victory over Poland, Time Magazine gave Blitzkrieg the name
"lightning war" (Rice 9). The term "blitz means lightning and the term krieg means war". Although
the Blitzkrieg battle tactic led to rapid and successful German occupation in Europe, it ... Show

On June 22, 1941, Hitler sent 148 army divisions consisting of 3,350 tanks,7,100 cannons, 2,000
planes, and 3 million men to the Soviet border. Germany attacked Russia along an 1,800 mile long
front. In the beginning, Germany was very successful, and by the start of July Germany had
destroyed 1,000 Soviet aircrafts, 1,200 tanks, and 600 big guns and in addition had captured
150,000 Russian soldiers (Rice 30). The Blitzkrieg continued to roll into Moscow, the capital of
Russia, Moscow and it pushed Russian forces back 600 miles. However, suddenly the German
offensive seemed to take a toll for the worst. Germany made the mistake of only packing for a
month's worth of supplies and the rapid advance across Russia had spread the German tanks thin
and undersupplied. Also, the muddy terrain made it very hard for the tanks and other German
vehicles to advance. The Germans had underestimated the real strength and fortitude of the Soviet
Union army. Taking advantage of the turning momentum, the Soviet army began to repel the
undersupplied German army. Hitler's generals recommended they stop fighting until spring, but
Hitler declined the request and forced them to keep pushing through the winter. The main reason
Hitler forced his army to keep going was because he wanted the oil and the grain fields that
Leningrad and Moscow would give him. With all this happening, Hitler lost focus on his original
goal of destroying the Soviet Army. On December 6th, 1941, the Russians launched an unexpected
offensive along the two hundred mile front of Moscow. Many of the Germans couldn't fight back
because their automatic weapons were frozen and couldn't fire. The 100 Soviet divisions struck the
Nazis so badly, they never had time to recover. Nazi generals asked Hitler for a retreat but he

Sergei Kourdakov: The Supernatural Angel

feathered wings, and halos around their heads. The notion that angels exist does not only stem from
the Roman Catholic Church. Many folks of all religions have experienced supernatural phenomena

them. Whether that unseen force is a divine being depends on your belief system. It's interesting to
note that it doesn't always have to be related to religion, many people describe being guided by a

Bolshevik Collectivism In Mayakovsky
A work of art is so often, from its inception, a personal creation; and something which is created
from the artist's perception often inevitably becomes a meditation on his inescapable selfhood.
Following the revolution, Russia was marked by a burgeoning utilitarian ideal and a collectivism
which proclaimed, "one for all." The 1920s' Bolshevik leadership sought to reemploy the avant–
garde artists with the aims of instilling the masses with a proletarian mentality. A conflict between
the individual identity and the Bolshevik collectivism threatened to compromise the artist's values
and unique aesthetic aims.
A prime example of this internal discord is illustrated in the works of Mayakovsky. At the outset of
post–revolutionary Russia, the poet voices his annoyance at having to make propagandistic posters
in his 1920 poem "An Extraordinary Adventure". Ultimately, however, he discovers the merits of
this seemingly–uninspiring task by the end of the poem.
These agitprop posters were one of the most ubiquitous resources the government used to educate
and culture the masses. "At this point the Bolsheviks were convinced that the values inherent in
science and the arts were congenial to the principles of socialism. Culture was to be a helpmate in
the building of socialism" (Kenez, 65). The posters were extremely effective, for they spoke even to
the illiterate. Their content educated, while their modernist style cultured.
Several years later, however, Mayakovsky seems to revert

Catharsis In Night By Ele Wiesel
Aristotle once hypothesized that humans were attracted to tragedy and destruction so that they can
purge themselves of repressed emotions, otherwise known as catharsis. This is proved whenever
someone cries over a sad or tragic moment in a book or movie. After one stops crying, they feel
relief. This person might rewatch the same tragic moment or read it over and over so as to
experience that feeling again. In Night by Elie Wiesel, catharsis can be shown and experienced
through the many horrid situations that Elie is subjected to; however, Antigone by Sophocles may
not offer the reader the same feeling that Night offers. Night, by Elie Wiesel, provides an emotional
release for the reader through his vivid imagery of the conditions of the Holocaust. In one situation,
Elie witnesses a boy who has the strength to play his violin even after a march that caused terror and
death. As Elie falls asleep to the sound of the violin, he remarks, "How could I forget this concert
given before an audience of the dead and the dying?" (95). This moment exhibits a moment of hope
and happiness in a situation where there appears to be none. When Elie wakes up, he discovers the
violin boy, Juliek, to be dead next to his broken violin. However, when Juliek is revealed to be dead,
so is the hope and happiness previously felt. The sudden sadness and pity for the boy evoke a
purgation of the sadness that has been building up throughout the book. Later in the book, another
occurrence of happiness

Writing An Article On Wikipedia Essay
Despite the popular belief, writing an article on Wikipedia is subject to several rules. For example,
before creating a page for a new article and a new topic, you have to make sure that the subject you
tackled is either popular enough or old enough to be published. Yet there are some exceptions to this
rule. It is the case for sudden events such as November 2015 Paris attacks that took place few days
ago but already have a Wikipedia page.i Notability is not the only criterion to take into account
before knowing if your article can be published or not. You also have to follow some basic rules
such as avoiding plagiarism or always cite your sources at the end of the article. Moreover as an
author you have to remain as neutral as possible. One of Wikipedia 's goal is to provide information
without any biased point of view or personal statement. Maybe the two most important and famous
pillars of Wikipedia are the fact that it is free to use and licence free. Anyone can publish, edit or use
a Wikipedia article as long as one follows the rules mentioned earlier.ii Without a doubt, Wikipedia
is a website that you can use from time to time to find some pieces of information about various
subjects. Since it is an open website it covers a very wide spectrum of topics. One of the drawbacks
of it being open is that its content is not 100% reliable. That is the reason why to write an essay it is
better to avoid the use of this website. However some parts of articles cannot be edited

The animals communicated both externally and internally. Communication channels such as word
of mouth was utilized to transfer information and messages, for example Mr. Whymper acts as an
intermediary between Animal Farm and the outside world, he receives and pass on communication
from Napoleon to the other humans and spread rumors about the activities on the farm, as well as

to the other animals on farms across England, which caused animals on the other farms to lash out
and rebel against their human masters. Napoleon and Snowball conducted meetings every Sunday
with all the animals where the work for the upcoming week was planned out and resolutions were

World War 1 Turning Point Essay
World War One was an immensely pivotal event on how the rest of the 20th century would turn out.
What started off in Europe in July of 1914 became a global war that went brutally for more than 4
years and came to an end in November of 1918. From this war came not only the negatives, like the
death of mass amounts of soldiers and civilians, but many positives came to be as well. A new
lifestyle for many was put into play after the war and a whole new outlook on life was seen by
everyone across the globe. Very large changes in the world were made in consequence to the war
including territory changes in Europe, women in the workforce, and new technological
advancements. All of these things, and more, back up the idea of World War One being a turning

The Birth Of Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin
The birth of Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin on June 6, 1799 ushered in a period of revolution in
Russian literature. Pushkin's noble upbringing afforded him the opportunity to study under French
and Russian tutors, which lead to his passion and interest in poetry and prose work. After studying
at the Imperial Lyceum, Pushkin first published his work in The Messenger of Europe, a Russian
journal, at age 15. The censorship of Tsar Nicolaus I had a profound effect on his works, which had
themes that were at times unsettling to the autocrat of Russia. Pushkin did not have his own style,
but instead used the ideas of other to form his own unique style (Merrimen). Pushkin believed that it
was important to not only write an interesting story, but also to write poetry or prose an elegant,
precise, polished, and well executed way (Leatherbarrow 368). Pushkin's major theme dealt with the
balance of light, darkness, fire, and coldness, and then relating these ideas to social and political
occurrences in his homeland (Skorov 573–574). Among Russian literary critics, Pushkin has
received superstardom for his use of language to articulate his ideas in a way that many others could
not, but, in other countries around the world, the same appreciation for Pushkin's work does not
exist. Scholars attest this to the difficulty in translating Tsar Nicolaus' "native language," which was
not present in Western Europe during Pushkin's life (Emerson 653–654). Throughout his works,

13th Century Russia History
Even though Russia wasn't founded until 25 December 1991, its history traces back to the 9th
century. During this period, the first signs of the country's infrastructure began. Creation of trade
routes enabled empires being supplied, while leading to the country's growth. When the 10th
century hit, we got the first mention of Moscow. At the time, Moscow was a small settlement that
would soon become the pre–eminent city in Russia (A Brief History of Russia). By the 15th century,
Moscow became the capital of, which consequently became, Russia. Moreover, in the centuries that
would follow, Russia would battle through many wars, variety of leaders who wanted to take the
country in different directions, weak infrastructure, communism, and failures of economic growth.
Russia has become the world's largest country, expanding across 11 different time zones while
covering 17 million sq km.
Russian and Soviet military history extends from the time of the Mongol invasions (13th century) to

Today's Russian military consists of Ground Troops, Navy, Air Forces, and Airborne Troops. These
branches receive a $69 billion annual defense budget, which ranks 3rd behind only China and the
United States (Gavin, 2017). Their military is built from 18–27 years old citizens with a service
obligation of at least 1 year (reserve obligation, for non–officers, goes up to the age of 50). The
Russian military arsenal includes; tanks, combat aircraft, attack helicopters, carriers and warships,

Joseph Stalin Influence On Russia
Russia is one of the most powerful countries that we have yet seen in the world today. Russia's
culture, language, land, and traditions have been around since the beginning of times and are still
used to this day. The history of Russia, ethnic groups, cultures and lifestyles, economy, climate, and
current Russia are just a few of the most important essentials to know about Russia.
The early history of Russia is of migrating people and ancient kingdoms. Early Russia was not
actually "Russia", it was more of a collection of cities that gradually colonized into an empire.
Scandinavian people known as varagains crossed the Baltic Sea and land in what is now Eastern
Europe. Russia was once "Rus' " and that began in the pre 9th century. The early ... Show more

As for the government, the Russian economy has been a wild roller coaster ride, The Soviet
economy in the 1970's and 1980's seemed to be one of the most political units in the world. They
were strong and just seemed to be getting stronger. Although, the Soviet Union did not have major
problems like lack of incentives for productivity. The workers were not working and the bosses
were not paying and it turned into lack of productivity. They struggled with the economy
considering they had to split into 15 different countries. Boris Yeltsin was then left in control of
Russia after replacing the communist party. They had to completely rebuild the economy and
political structure. Eventually factories were shut down and the government was no longer
supporting the people financially in return for their goods. 50% of Russia had lived below the
poverty line by this time. Mineral fuels including iron, oil, steel, gems, precious metals and
machinery had become a huge resource for the economy. Russia's main exports are energy including
oil, petroleum, gas, and coal. Metals, minerals, natural gas, timber, fertilizers, and machinery were
more of the exports Russia relied on. Russia's agricultural aspect included wheat, barley, sunflower
seeds, oats, potatoes, and

Russian Orthodox Christianity : A Unique And Distinct...
Russian Orthodox Christianity as we know it today has a unique and distinct identity from other
Orthodox Christian Churches around the world, specifically when it comes to asceticism,
monasticism and the understanding of Hesychasm. The devotion that people have towards their
faith, along with the majesty of the services with thousands flocking to the cathedrals and
monasteries to venerate relics and miraculous icons is rarely seen elsewhere. Russian Orthodoxy has
come to where it stands today because of the efforts of many saints and blessed men and women.
They fought and persevered through many temptations and difficulties in order to maintain and
preserve the faith of the Fathers. This journey, which was filled with glories and persecutions, began
with the baptism of Russia in 988, under the rule of Prince Vladimir. It continued through laying the
foundation of monasticism in the early eleventh century by St. Theodosius, and later on with the
introduction of Hesychasm and mysticism through St. Sergius of Radonezh. Nevertheless, at a
certain period in history, roughly around the early fourteenth century, monasticism had reached a
stagnant point. The Tartar invasion of 1237, that lasted for about three years affected most of the old
communities and produced great disorders in both the religious and moral life of the Russians.
Society had not recovered from the aftermath of the invasion until the fourteenth century, when St.
Sergius played a great role. Through the efforts

A Truly Beautiful Soul in The Idiot, by Fyodor Dostoyevsky...
The Russian novelist Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky stands at the very summit of Russian
literature. No 19th–century writer had greater psychological insight or philosophical depth. None
speaks more immediately and passionately to the mood and tone of the present century. This essay
will discuss how Dostoyevsky's intent to portray a 'truly beautiful soul' manifests itself in the novel
The Idiot, and access Dostoyevsky's success or failure in achieving his intention.
Dostoyevsky confesses in his letter to Maikov dated January 12, 1868 that his 'desperate situation'
compelled him to resort to the fascinating and tempting, but nonetheless difficult and premature
thought of portraying 'a wholly beautiful individual.' As a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This would suggest that Myshkin could not possibly embody beauty since he is ineffectual and
destructive and ultimately inadvertently assists a murder of a physically beautiful woman. I will try
to show in my essay though that although this is a deliberately pessimistic and truthful hypothesis,
Dostoyevsky does portray a 'truly beautiful soul'.
The proposal of The Idiot is to expose the contradiction between worldly and heavenly values: a
'saint', like Prince Myshkin, is considered an 'idiot'. He doesn't see what everybody sees, because he
has got his eyes set not in other people's faces, but in their souls. Just like the author, he is a
psychologist: and a psychologist not only with a complete understanding of every individual's
minds, but also full of compassion for each one of their failures. Once again, we see the triad
'compassion/forgiveness/love' as the main message of the book.
Prince Myshkin is Dostoyevsky's positive character. He is an ideal Christian and lives by the virtue
of such ideals. He is compassionate, benevolent, patient and forgiving. He arrives in Russia at the
age of twenty six having spent four years in Switzerland treating his epilepsy and mental illness. He
refers to himself as an 'idiot' because of this illness. The reason for his arrival to St. Petersburg is to
start a new life with the help of his distant relative Elizaveta Prokofievna Yepanchin. At their family
home he is attracted to Aglaya as a new hope. He

Nutcracker Music Analysis

  • 1. Nutcracker Music Analysis The Nutcracker had a wide variety of instruments it consists of 2 or more harps, double basses, cellos, violas, violins, a rattle, 2 trumpets, cymbals, 3 flutes, 2 piccolos, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, a bass clarinet, 4 horns, 2 bassoons, 3 trombones, a tuba, a tam tam, a military drum and a glockenspiel. Two large elements that are unique to this piece are the style of the music and the dynamics. The style of the music because, the song was unique for Russia and added a tint of joy to the cymphony. Other songs of that time were focused more on bass depth more than pleasure to the youth. Dynamics because, it features sudden high pitch at little notice and unexpected low pitches. Language Quests-Personal Narrative After I logged in I noticed Matt was already setting up, thinking nothing out of the ordinary I went back to finding a long, but not tedious quest that hopefully would take us most of the night. I thought a language quest might be the key, one with lots of puzzles and wordplay for Matt and then some foreign language and classic English for me. What struck me most looking back now is that something was not right as Matt set up. ~–~ "Crap," Matt whispered under his breath. "Everything all right Matt?" I asked, leaning out of the rig to look at him. "Yeah, just a small malfunction with the little suckers on my glove. I think I fixed it," he replied. "Alright, that's good," I said. I went back to looking for quests to do together as I noticed Matthew had finally joined. "What do you want to do?" He asked. "I was thinking a language quest or something you and I might enjoy," I replied, hoping he'd go for the language choice. Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment God Answers the Questions Presented by Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment In Dostoevsky's novels pain and some heavy burden of the inevitability of human suffering and helplessness form Russia. And he depicts it not with white gloves on, nor through the blisters of the peasant, but through people who are close to him and his realities: city people who either have faith, or secular humanists who are so remote from reality that even when they love humanity they despise humans because of their own inability to achieve or to create paradise on earth. His novels The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment are best examples of the poisonous effect of such ideals on the common man. The rebellion of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That is not the love that is directed towards the humanity as a whole, but towards the individual: "Strive to love your neighbor actively and indefatigably" (II, 4). For Dostoevsky such love is a false one and he presents it through such characters as Rakitin, Perkhotin and even Luzhin: Consciousness of life is superior to life, knowledge of the laws of happiness is superior to happiness––that is what we must fight against. (The Dream of a Ridiculous Man , p. 382) One of greatest evils for Dostoevsky are the so–called liberals who "love humanity more than an individual man." Yet he does not represent their behavior as genuinely evil . Their hate towards humanity arises exactly from the opposite: love. Secular humanists see so much evil, crime and inhumanity, they cannot stop it so they rebel. Ivan Karamazov and his rebellion are purely of that kind. He is not vile, he just cannot understand that there might be a solution for such suffering, especially in the case of children who are innocent in Christianity. That is why Ivan asks: Love life more than the meaning of it? (II, 3) Ivan as any average intellectual, wants to know. To know the meaning of life for him is more important than to actually do something about the human suffering. Ivan forgets that one human life is as important as the entire humanity. For him humanity is merely an abstraction which happen to be surrounding him. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Essay Comparing Kurtz And Macbeth The Horror! Osica Pasachhe The conditions and antecedents that caused Kurtz and Macbeth's deterioration are different. Kurtz was forced to face the evil of his unraveling, inner primitive self when in the jungle, whereas Macbeth encounters evil in his mission to murder Duncan and become king. Similarly, both Kurtz and Macbeth begin their story as honorable and admired men but as their story unfolds they both lose sight of themselves and fall into the arms of evil. Their actions (once they obtain power) are also incredibly alike; both make comparable sacrifices to fulfill their goal, and both have an impressive ambition that leads them to their success but also to their downfall. A little while later Ross (the king's messenger) enters and brings the news to Macbeth that he has been given the title of the Thane of Cawdor. He is shocked to learn that the first part of his prophecy had already come true, which enabled him to believe that what the witches said may hold truth. • 5. Analysis: Why The Teen Brain Is Drawn To Risk What do you think when you hear the word "teenager"? Most people think of teenagers as pugnacious and restless human beings. Their rebellious and rambunctious behavior usually leads people to believe this. Teens tend to participate in jeopardous activities such as dangerous driving, binge–drinking, or fighting that could land them in serious trouble, the ER or the police station. Although engaging in these exercises is strongly frowned upon, some studies show that most of these actions cannot be controlled. Adolescents are drawn to risky acts due to specific messengers in the brain, peer pressure and their odd methods of apprehending the outcomes of a situation. Research depicts that teenagers fail to notice risks in a situation and completely process other ones when adults thoroughly examine the consequences and focus on the ending outcome. An article by Maia Szalavitz titled "Why the Teen Brain is Drawn to Risk" suggests that teens engage in drunk driving because they don't completely scan the outcome of the situation, but they fully comprehend the risk of partaking in other activities that adults would immediately dismiss after looking at the possible outcomes such as Russian Roulette(Source F). This shows that adults quickly decide on seemingly dangerous actions because they view the finishing outcome of that activity while teems envision the whole activity and still choose to participate. On top of that, young adults are intrigued by unknown risks rather than known ones. Chris Sharma, a famous rock climber, mentions that he is "looking for new, hard climbs that no one has even thought possible" in a video named "Who Is Chris Sharma?"(Source G). This suggests that, as a young adult, he searches for climbs that have a high risk level that is unknown or ambiguous. In 1812, Napoleon, whose alliance with Alexander I had disintegrated, launched an invasion into Russia that ended in a disastrous retreat from Moscow. Thereafter, all of Europe, including his own allies, Austria and Prussia, united against him. Although he continued to fight, the odds he faced were impossible. In April 1814, Napoleon's own marshals refused to continue the struggle and stepped down from their positions. During the actual Russian campaign, there were many key factors that greatly impacted his downfall. The artillery and small arms were years behind that of France. The Russian army was a conscription army, meaning that local farmers had to furnish a certain number of surfs for military service, as opposed to a professional, trained army where the government supplies the soldiers with all of their needs. An amazing half–million soldiers had enlisted in Napoleon's Grand Armée (Saglamer, Beginning of the March). This was the largest army gathered for one single invasion. Russia's army was out numbered 3:1 with only one hundred–seventy thousand soldiers. Not only was the Russian army not well trained, they were also ill equipped. Napoleon recognized that it would be difficult and extremely slow for Russia to mobilize her army due to her enormous size and weak infrastructure. If Napoleon invaded now, he knew that he could be well into the Russian territory before meeting any major opposition. On June 24, 1812, Napoleon began his fatal Russian campaign. The Grand Armée, led by Napoleon, crossed the Nieman River, into Russia. On the journey to Moscow, Napoleon met virtually no major opposition. The first stop in the campaign was Kovono. Early into the campaign, the Grand Armée was affected by a colic epidemic that claimed the life of nine thousand horses and thousands of soldiers (Web, Russian Embassy). Watch your step, so far as affection for this gentleman is concerned, think of yourself, Madame." The young couple settled down, but the marriage was a miserable failure. Catherine was disappointed with her marriage, but decided to stick it out and concentrate on building herself a powerful group of allies. Catherine occupied herself with reading everything she could lay her hands on. She discovered satisfaction in the works of Plato and Voltaire. Her interest in the intellect caused an even greater distance between Peter and herself. The years passed and there was still no heir in sight. Analysis Of Chekhov 's ' The Brothers Karamazov ' Chekhov's use of allusion in "Misery" also stands in stark contrast to the works of other Russian literary giants such as Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, whose works often featured deep themes revolving around the aforementioned Christian thought. While a deep discussion on these themes is out of the scope of this paper, perhaps one of the most obvious and contrasting examples can be found in Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, which was published around 6 years before Chekhov wrote "Misery". Jonah refuses to simply accept God's message, and instead challenges God to explain why he even had to go through his journey in the first place. When God responds, the Book of Jonah simply ends, and we never hear from Jonah again. The final image of Jonah is of him sitting under a wilting plant, fuming and wishing for an end to his life. Thus Jonah himself is in fact one of the more miserable figures of the Bible. It is only appropriate that Chekhov chose such an unorthodox figure, rather than someone like Job, to connect to the misery of his protagonist. Jonah's questioning of God even when facing his literal presence is also appropriate given Chekhov's own questioning of faith. Jonah, in a Chekhovian fashion, focuses on the realities of what he had to go through, rather than being humbled and indulging in Job's deep, yet clear–cut answers and happy ending. The literary career of this "great writer of the Russian land" (as his contemporary Turgenev called him) may be divided into three parts: the early period of literary apprenticeship (1851–63), the period of the great novels (1863–77), and the later period of preoccupation with the message of his religious teaching (1878–1910). Although this negative image remains associated with their history, with hindsight, historians have been able to shed light on a positive perspective of the Mongols and their success creating the largest Empire in world history. The World War II German military tactic of Blitzkrieg was born that used a combination of tanks, infantry, and Luftwaffe dive bombers to rapidly punch a hole in enemy lines. Blitzkrieg was first used in the invasion of Poland, but was adopted as the common German invasion method across Europe and Russia. In the beginning, Germany was very successful, and by the start of July Germany had destroyed 1,000 Soviet aircrafts, 1,200 tanks, and 600 big guns and in addition had captured 150,000 Russian soldiers (Rice 30). The Blitzkrieg continued to roll into Moscow, the capital of Russia, Moscow and it pushed Russian forces back 600 miles. However, suddenly the German offensive seemed to take a toll for the worst. Germany made the mistake of only packing for a month's worth of supplies and the rapid advance across Russia had spread the German tanks thin and undersupplied. Also, the muddy terrain made it very hard for the tanks and other German vehicles to advance. The Germans had underestimated the real strength and fortitude of the Soviet Union army. Taking advantage of the turning momentum, the Soviet army began to repel the undersupplied German army. Hitler's generals recommended they stop fighting until spring, but Hitler declined the request and forced them to keep pushing through the winter. The main reason Hitler forced his army to keep going was because he wanted the oil and the grain fields that Leningrad and Moscow would give him. With all this happening, Hitler lost focus on his original goal of destroying the Soviet Army. On December 6th, 1941, the Russians launched an unexpected offensive along the two hundred mile front of Moscow. Many of the Germans couldn't fight back because their automatic weapons were frozen and couldn't fire. The 100 Soviet divisions struck the Nazis so badly, they never had time to recover. • 30. Bolshevik Collectivism In Mayakovsky A work of art is so often, from its inception, a personal creation; and something which is created from the artist's perception often inevitably becomes a meditation on his inescapable selfhood. Following the revolution, Russia was marked by a burgeoning utilitarian ideal and a collectivism which proclaimed, "one for all." The 1920s' Bolshevik leadership sought to reemploy the avant– garde artists with the aims of instilling the masses with a proletarian mentality. A conflict between the individual identity and the Bolshevik collectivism threatened to compromise the artist's values and unique aesthetic aims. A prime example of this internal discord is illustrated in the works of Mayakovsky. At the outset of post–revolutionary Russia, the poet voices his annoyance at having to make propagandistic posters in his 1920 poem "An Extraordinary Adventure". Ultimately, however, he discovers the merits of this seemingly–uninspiring task by the end of the poem. These agitprop posters were one of the most ubiquitous resources the government used to educate and culture the masses. "At this point the Bolsheviks were convinced that the values inherent in science and the arts were congenial to the principles of socialism. Culture was to be a helpmate in the building of socialism" (Kenez, 65). The posters were extremely effective, for they spoke even to the illiterate. • 31. Catharsis In Night By Ele Wiesel Aristotle once hypothesized that humans were attracted to tragedy and destruction so that they can purge themselves of repressed emotions, otherwise known as catharsis. This is proved whenever someone cries over a sad or tragic moment in a book or movie. After one stops crying, they feel relief. This person might rewatch the same tragic moment or read it over and over so as to experience that feeling again. In Night by Elie Wiesel, catharsis can be shown and experienced through the many horrid situations that Elie is subjected to; however, Antigone by Sophocles may not offer the reader the same feeling that Night offers. Night, by Elie Wiesel, provides an emotional release for the reader through his vivid imagery of the conditions of the Holocaust. In one situation, Elie witnesses a boy who has the strength to play his violin even after a march that caused terror and death. As Elie falls asleep to the sound of the violin, he remarks, "How could I forget this concert given before an audience of the dead and the dying?" (95). This moment exhibits a moment of hope and happiness in a situation where there appears to be none. When Elie wakes up, he discovers the violin boy, Juliek, to be dead next to his broken violin. However, when Juliek is revealed to be dead, so is the hope and happiness previously felt. The sudden sadness and pity for the boy evoke a purgation of the sadness that has been building up throughout the book. Later in the book, another occurrence of happiness ... Pushkin's noble upbringing afforded him the opportunity to study under French and Russian tutors, which lead to his passion and interest in poetry and prose work. After studying at the Imperial Lyceum, Pushkin first published his work in The Messenger of Europe, a Russian journal, at age 15. The censorship of Tsar Nicolaus I had a profound effect on his works, which had themes that were at times unsettling to the autocrat of Russia. Pushkin did not have his own style, but instead used the ideas of other to form his own unique style (Merrimen). Pushkin believed that it was important to not only write an interesting story, but also to write poetry or prose an elegant, precise, polished, and well executed way (Leatherbarrow 368). Pushkin's major theme dealt with the balance of light, darkness, fire, and coldness, and then relating these ideas to social and political occurrences in his homeland (Skorov 573–574). Among Russian literary critics, Pushkin has received superstardom for his use of language to articulate his ideas in a way that many others could not, but, in other countries around the world, the same appreciation for Pushkin's work does not exist. The proposal of The Idiot is to expose the contradiction between worldly and heavenly values: a 'saint', like Prince Myshkin, is considered an 'idiot'. He doesn't see what everybody sees, because he has got his eyes set not in other people's faces, but in their souls.
