Bio-Terrain In-office Diagnostic System NTR5503 Nutritional Assessment By Kari Andrew
Purpose of the Tool What is being measured?
Purpose Bio-Terrain Analysis, A.K.A Flow Systems Analysis, is used to measure several factors of the fluid dynamics of the body’s internal environment. The body’s internal environment is referred to as the “terrain” or “biological terrain”. Feedback is gained about the body’s entire internal biochemical/electrical environment. This base line can be used to determine treatment or as an outcome assessment measure for the effectiveness of treatment.
Purpose This dynamic form of biochemical biofeedback helps to uncover the underlying cause or causes of a patient’s imbalance or illness, rather then treating a list of “symptoms” Biochemical terrain research and its methods of use cannot diagnose a specific disease entity. Like a chemistry profile is an analytical tool only, it does not diagnose specific disease entities.
What is Being Measured pH rH2 Resistivity/conductivity Specific gravity Surface tension Nitrate nitrogen Ammonia nitrogen balance
What Can We Learn? Level of acidity of cells Level of compensating alkalinity of blood/saliva Kidney’s ability to excrete excess acid Hemoglobin’s oxygen release tendency Thickness of blood Energy generation of cells Electron content of blood and saliva Kidney’s ability to hold electrons Level of mineral deficiency Digestive enzyme status Antioxidant status Level of lymphatic congestion
Patient Explanation Keep it simple
Patient Explanation Biological Terrain Assessment (BTA) is a cutting edge screening tool to put your health back on track. It can also be used as a wonderful preventative and anti-aging system. The basic notion of BTA is that if our “terrain” or “internal environment” is out of balance due to an unhealthy lifestyle or environmental toxins, we are setting ourselves up for disease.
What is Biological Terrain? Similar to a plant which is nourished by the soil, a human cell is bathed in a nutrient-filled fluid, called interstitial fluid or Biological Terrain. This interstitial fluid (Biological Terrain) nourishes the 100 trillion cells in your body. It delivers to the cells electrolytes, minerals, vitamins, other nutrients, enzymes, hormones and water. The same interstitial fluid (Biological Terrain) transports the substances and waste products the cells release. These substances enter the blood, urine, lymphatic fluid and saliva for proper utilization and disposal.
Patient Explanation Is your body’s internal environment designed for cancer, yeast, bacteria, viruses, or health? Health! With BTA, doctors are able to objectively determine the direction a patient’s health is heading and monitor their progress.
History & Development “If you would understand anything, observe its beginning and its development.” - Aristotle
Professor Claude Bernard Was a 19th century physiologist who believed that the environment of the cell, which he termed the milieu interieur, determined the cell’s function and integrity.
Professor Louis-Claude Vincent A French hydrologist who, at approximately 1935, began his journey in measuring the parameters of human health. In 1948, with the help of Dr. Jeanne Rousseau, Vincent’s first Bioelectronimetre became operational. His machine correlated the electrical values of pH, rH2, and R (resistivity) to the body fluids of blood, urine and saliva.
Professor Louis-Claude Vincent Professor Louis-Claude Vincent presented his theory of “la MethodeBioelectronique” at the second International Convention for Medical Electronics in 1959. He concluded that in order to fully understand health the bodies building blocks must be monitored and controlled. These building blocks are found in the body’s fluids The bio cellular environment determines the body’s tendency toward developing various metabolic imbalances that can lead to disease.
Professor Janos Kemeny A Bio-mathematician who was working independent of Vincent and Rousseau. He, through is own research, was able to prove the basis Professor Vincent’s “MethodeBioelectronique”. His work was published in the Bulletin der Akeademie der Wissenschaft, Berlin, February 1953.
Mechanism How does it work?
How Does BTA Work? As it turns out there is no clear answer to this from the information that is currently available. It is theorized to analyze blood, urine and saliva specimens while reporting on the pH, resistivity, and redox values of these specimens. Since the exact mechanism is unknown the equipment and various measurements will be discussed
The Electrode A measured value can only be as good as the transducer that was used to gain the measured value. The electrode will measure the three main values of pH, rH2, and R as well as several others. Values are then either recorded manually or sent to a computer for analysis
rH2 Measurement This measures the oxidation-reduction potential under a specific pH measurement. Indicates the amount of electron potential that exists in the urine and saliva. A high level of available electrons in the cell and more specifically, in the mitochondria, is a desirable condition Electrons are produced via the Krebs Cycle Electrons are then carried in high-energy intermediates
rH2 Measurement High-energy biochemical intermediates are converted to ATP/GTP via the electron transport chain and oxidative phosphorylation. Increased rH2 above the optimal range indicates a relative decrease in electron donors compared to electron acceptors. Meaning that the patient has a lowered ability to produce high-energy cellular fuels (ATP/GTP).
R Measurement R or resistivity is measured in ohms It is synonymous with the relative concentration of electrically conductive ions in solution. When testing biological fluids it indicates relative mineral concentrations It is inversely proportional to mineral concentration
pH Measurement pH or the “potential of hydrogen” measures alkalinity and acidity. It measures the ion concentration of a solution and is expressed in terms of a logarithmic expression. Essential because hormone receptor sites, enzyme kinetics, and mitochondrial function are all pH dependent.
Safety of Use There are no contraindications or safety guidelines available for the Bio-Terrain In-office Diagnostic System.
Safety of Use Since bodily fluids are being handled in the office general guidelines for proper handling should be followed. Special care should be taken if handling blood specimens due to possibility of blood-borne pathogens. Guidelines are provided by OSHA and WHO. Occupational Safety and Health Administration World Health Organization Guidelines for blood handling Wear gloves and other protective gear. Sanitize all equipment and area of blood draw. Before and after Dispose of body fluids in appropriate container Dispose of needles in specified puncture resistant sharps container Wash hands before and after procedure
Case Studies, Testimonials & Marketing
Marketing The computer responsible for BTA is known as the BTA S-2000 This device is marketed by the Grieshaber Group, or Schiltach, Germany and the Biological Technologies International (BTI) or Payson, Arizona. Founded and run by Robert Greenburg D.C. “Provide the most advanced instruments and technologies in the world to support predictive and preventative healthcare. Equipment and seminars are sold to alternative health care providers
Case Study 3 year old boy (Michael) was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease on April 5, 1999. Experiencing abdominal pain, blood in the stools and high fevers Lab Readings: Alkaline Phasphatase = 502 SGOT = 616 SGPT = 1257 SED rate = 38
Case Study Lab values indicate extreme inflammation BTA Analysis: Increased salivary pH Indicating cellular acidity and/or decreased activity of salivary ptyalin (affecting digesting) Increased salivary R Indicating decreased mineral concentration: caused by either mal-absorption or lack of enzymes
Case Study Michael was then put on a comprehensive program Dairy Free Gluten Free Decreased Carbohydrate Intake Anti-inflammatory Chinese Herbal Regime 4R Program Ultraclear Sustain Probioplex Acidophilus Bifidus FC Cidal ADP Yeast/Fungal Homeopathies Essential Fatty acids
Case Study BTA Analysis: Relative Decrease in salivary pH Indicating neutralization of cellular acidity and improvement in yeast condition Relative Decrease in salivary R Indicating improvement in yeast condition and improved mineral absorption Michael’s program will continue focusing on the previously less important findings of high urine R (taxed kidney) and high rH2 (oxidative liver stress).
Testimonial In July of 2000, I visited the Herbs store and underwent my initial nutrition counseling with HalinaHladysz, M.S., Clinical Herbalist. What a wake-up call. I decided to stop leaving my health and well-being to the doctors I’ve seen and all the prescription pills they sent me home with. Halina has helped to educate me about how my body is reacting to the environment, foods, allergies, stressors of a past lifestyle in order to instruct me on how I must take charge of what I’m putting into my body in hopes of slowing down the aging and degeneration of my whole body and begin to repair and strengthen the body God has given to me. Degeneration of our body through aging happens over a lifetime. However, my lifestyle was aging my body by over 20 years. We can’t turn back the clock but we can slow down the whole process, repair, re-strengthen and rejuvenate our body through responsible choices.
Testimonial It has been 4 years since I initially walked into Halina’s office. In September of 2002 she moved her Clinic to her home to give more individualized counseling and has added the Biological Terrain Assessment testing to her program. This testing along with my progress report and counseling has given me actual numbers to look at and to see my results of a changed lifestyle through education, counseling and natural herbal supplements that I have taken to help cleanse, detoxify, repair and strengthen. You see, “There is no Magic Pill that works overnight.” I chose alternate, Natural Way to heal my body from the inside, out. I know that the process of change will happen each day when I make responsible choices and feed my body nutritional foods and supplements with natural herbs. Today, 4 years later, I feel so much happier, healthier physically, mentally and spiritually. My general appearance and well-being is like having a light switched back on. You now can understand why a testimony was necessary for me to relay to others, how important taking one-day-at-a-time makes all the difference to your health and well-being. Sincerely, Cindy V. Peer Reviewed Literature A Double Blind Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial
Randomized Controlled Trial A randomized controlled trial (RCT) is a type of scientific experiment A form of clinical trial most commonly used in: Safety testing Efficacy of healthcare services Effectiveness of health care services Efficacy of health technologies Effectiveness of health technologies Study subjects are randomly allocated to receive one or other of the alternative treatments
Peer Reviewed Literature Objective To determine whether Biological Terrain In-Office Diagnostic equipment accurately distinguishes a systemic disturbance in the subjects, and helps to aid in the return to normal body homeostasis. Design A short-term, Biological Terrain Diagnostic System, Efficacy study, A double blind, Randomized Placebo-controlled trial
Participants 500 undergraduate students will be selected from volunteers (they will be paid a minimal compensation fee). Selection criteria includes: Age (18-25) Score of 71 or higher on Stress Questionnaire http://bfec.kenyon.edu/Healthy_Kenyon/stress_psymptoms.pdf Ability to continue through to the end of study (6 months)
Peer Reviewed Literature Interventions Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either Biological Terrain approved treatment for specific condition shown on Biological Terrain assessment; or placebo (sugar pill) no matter what the Biological Terrain assessment shows. Outcome Measures Biological Terrain Assessment, CBC, CHEM w/diff, ESR, Urinalysis, Symptom Survey, Stress Questionnaire,
Patient Selection Criteria Are there limitations? Nope!
Patient Selection Criteria Each person is biologically and chemically unique. Although bodies and functions appear to be similar, Biological Terrain demonstrates that each person’s biochemistry responds differently to stress, diet, change, health and illness. The biochemistry of each person responds differently to such factors as long-term exposure to heavy metals and toxins in the air, food and water. These chemical agents may damage the cells, interfering with their abilities to function and maintain health. Monitoring the biological fluids may provide an in-depth look at some of their biochemical effects.
Patient Selection Criteria Ahealthy and health-conscience person Biological Terrain Assessment uncovers the unbalanced biochemistry before it leads to illness and before any symptoms appear. Thanks to this knowledge, you may take steps to balance your biochemistry and prevent illness. An Unhealthy Person Biological Terrain Assessment may identify the underlying root causes of your existing health problems and weaknesses. Thanks to this knowledge, you may take steps to balance your biochemistry and overcome your health problems.
Conclusion In the end…
Conclusion The bottom line is this, if one understands HOW an unhealthy condition arrived, one can understand HOW to reverse the unhealthy condition. Monitoring the Biological Terrain provides valuable information about the underlying factors that may influence the overall state of your vitality and well-being. A healthy cell living in a healthy Biological Terrain will thrive A healthy cell living in an unhealthy Biological Terrain will fail to thrive A Biological Terrain Assessment does not diagnose an illness or disease. It monitors specific parameters of your Biological Terrain.

  • 10. Patient Explanation Is your body’s internal environment designed for cancer, yeast, bacteria, viruses, or health? Health! With BTA, doctors are able to objectively determine the direction a patient’s health is heading and monitor their progress.
  • 11. History & Development “If you would understand anything, observe its beginning and its development.” - Aristotle
  • 12. Professor Claude Bernard Was a 19th century physiologist who believed that the environment of the cell, which he termed the milieu interieur, determined the cell’s function and integrity.
  • 16. Mechanism How does it work?
  • 18. The Electrode A measured value can only be as good as the transducer that was used to gain the measured value. The electrode will measure the three main values of pH, rH2, and R as well as several others. Values are then either recorded manually or sent to a computer for analysis
  • 19. rH2 Measurement This measures the oxidation-reduction potential under a specific pH measurement. Indicates the amount of electron potential that exists in the urine and saliva. A high level of available electrons in the cell and more specifically, in the mitochondria, is a desirable condition Electrons are produced via the Krebs Cycle Electrons are then carried in high-energy intermediates
  • 20. rH2 Measurement High-energy biochemical intermediates are converted to ATP/GTP via the electron transport chain and oxidative phosphorylation. Increased rH2 above the optimal range indicates a relative decrease in electron donors compared to electron acceptors. Meaning that the patient has a lowered ability to produce high-energy cellular fuels (ATP/GTP).
  • 21. R Measurement R or resistivity is measured in ohms It is synonymous with the relative concentration of electrically conductive ions in solution. When testing biological fluids it indicates relative mineral concentrations It is inversely proportional to mineral concentration
  • 22. pH Measurement pH or the “potential of hydrogen” measures alkalinity and acidity. It measures the ion concentration of a solution and is expressed in terms of a logarithmic expression. Essential because hormone receptor sites, enzyme kinetics, and mitochondrial function are all pH dependent.
  • 23. Safety of Use There are no contraindications or safety guidelines available for the Bio-Terrain In-office Diagnostic System.
  • 28. Case Study Lab values indicate extreme inflammation BTA Analysis: Increased salivary pH Indicating cellular acidity and/or decreased activity of salivary ptyalin (affecting digesting) Increased salivary R Indicating decreased mineral concentration: caused by either mal-absorption or lack of enzymes
  • 29. Case Study Michael was then put on a comprehensive program Dairy Free Gluten Free Decreased Carbohydrate Intake Anti-inflammatory Chinese Herbal Regime 4R Program Ultraclear Sustain Probioplex Acidophilus Bifidus FC Cidal ADP Yeast/Fungal Homeopathies Essential Fatty acids
  • 30. Case Study BTA Analysis: Relative Decrease in salivary pH Indicating neutralization of cellular acidity and improvement in yeast condition Relative Decrease in salivary R Indicating improvement in yeast condition and improved mineral absorption Michael’s program will continue focusing on the previously less important findings of high urine R (taxed kidney) and high rH2 (oxidative liver stress).
  • 32. Outcome Measures Biological Terrain Assessment, CBC, CHEM w/diff, ESR, Urinalysis, Symptom Survey, Stress Questionnaire,
  • 38. Patient Selection Criteria Are there limitations? Nope!
