This document classifies and describes different types of ecosystems. It divides ecosystems into terrestrial ecosystems that exist on land, including forests, grasslands, deserts, and polar regions, and aquatic ecosystems that exist in water, including freshwater ecosystems like rivers, streams, and lakes, and saltwater ecosystems near and far from coasts, like coral reefs. Forest ecosystems provide shelter and food for animals. Grassland ecosystems have herbivores that eat grass and carnivores that eat the herbivores. Desert ecosystems have few plants and animals but camels and snakes have adapted to the dry conditions.
