Materials can be natural or human-made substances used to create objects. Natural materials come from animals, plants, or minerals and include silk, wool, wood, cotton, marble, and granite. Human-made materials are created from raw materials and include glass, which is made from sand, and most plastics, which are made from petroleum. Each material has different properties that determine its appropriate uses; for example, glass is fragile while rubber is elastic.
