“Ethical Dilemma at Novacib Labs”

Situation Analysis:
Novacib, one of the largest pharmaceutical marketing firms in the Western
India which has grown from 22 brands to 46 and become a multinational company.
SiddhantKapoor the CEO of the firm who has changed the tagline from “Health for
everyone “to “Health with Integrity “and has established zero tolerance policy
towards ethical violations. He is a goal-oriented person and has achieved the targets
of the company. Shraddha Pillai the regional sales manager at Mumbai office and
Bhavana Batra the HR director of the company. He is now in a dilemma when he
came to know that one of their top salespersons had falsified his reportby Shraddha.
Uday Madhav:
Uday, a top sales person of the company who routinely exceeds his annual
targetby 10% to20% and has broughta revenue of over $2,50,000in a year. He earned
the top commission prize three times in five years. He has mentored his juniors and
has been a star performer.
The Case:
On 21st June, Uday had tomeet 3 doctors but he falsified his reportand enjoyed
watching a World Cupmatch between Argentinaand Croatiaby staying athome. So,
he did not have to chance to meet the doctors and he altered the day of the visit. He
intentionallyfalsifiedhis report by this, he has breached the ethics of the company.
The Dilemma:
The CEO called for a conference meeting with the HR director Bhavana Batra
and the regional sales manager Shraddha Pillai about Uday’s matter. Bhavana put
forward for firing Uday because of the strict policy on ethical issues and forgiving
him would lead to loss of reputation of the company, but Shraddha made a point of
giving Uday a second chance as he was an asset to the firm and firing him revenue.
So Siddhant personally confronted Uday about the mistake over phone call. Uday
admitted his mistake thathe did not meet the doctors on 21st of June but on different
dates due to the mental pressure with his new born baby. Uday apologized for his
mistake and requested for a second chance.
Problem Statement:
Novacib Company is very firm with their ethics, and they have zero tolerance
towards ethical breaches. The reason behindthe falsification ofthe reportby their top
salesperson has to be found. On other hand, he is a star performer who is adding
fortune to the company. Finally, Uday is in dilemma where he had to lose company
value and its career.
Criteria:
 Impact on the company.
 The relationship between employees and Uday Madhav.
 Anyone high department member query with Uday Madhav regarding the
problem.
 The revenue generated by Uday Madhav.
Options:
 Give Uday a second chance with a penalty.
 Firing Uday from the company.
 Official Discussion.
Evaluation of Options:
Giving Uday a second chance with a penalty would also be a good choice
according tothe ethics and he would alsoacceptit for regretting his mistake,the other
employees also become cautious on their work.
Firing Uday from the company will be the best choice according to the
company’s ethics, he falsified his report intentionally. The company’s revenue will
surely go down because it is tough to replace the best salesperson; other employees
will get a bad impression about the management and feel insecure about working.
An official discussion between the officials will be giving more of positive
feedback supporting Mr. Uday. This is because of what he is towards all other staffs.
The reason of his falsified report has already been found and it is not going to be a
very big mistake comparing what he just faced during the scheduled time.
Recommendations:
The company should pay attention to the employee’s mindset by conducting
counselling sessions. And this case anyone can ask the actual reason from Uday on
personal level and the most appropriate option would be to give Uday a second
chance with a penalty. The penalty may be a fine. Uday is a star performer so he
would not do it again. A person’s performance will improve when they are stress-
free. Uday also should be warned for his action of falsifying the report.
Action Plan:
The company should form a team of counsellors to give counselling to the
employees once a year. The HR department should pay attention to the employees’
situation and problems. And company department should give some tips to the
workers to improve their skills. Company can also take feedbacks from their
employees.

  • 2. Situation Analysis: Novacib, one of the largest pharmaceutical marketing firms in the Western India which has grown from 22 brands to 46 and become a multinational company. SiddhantKapoor the CEO of the firm who has changed the tagline from “Health for everyone “to “Health with Integrity “and has established zero tolerance policy towards ethical violations. He is a goal-oriented person and has achieved the targets of the company. Shraddha Pillai the regional sales manager at Mumbai office and Bhavana Batra the HR director of the company. He is now in a dilemma when he came to know that one of their top salespersons had falsified his reportby Shraddha. Uday Madhav: Uday, a top sales person of the company who routinely exceeds his annual targetby 10% to20% and has broughta revenue of over $2,50,000in a year. He earned the top commission prize three times in five years. He has mentored his juniors and has been a star performer. The Case: On 21st June, Uday had tomeet 3 doctors but he falsified his reportand enjoyed watching a World Cupmatch between Argentinaand Croatiaby staying athome. So, he did not have to chance to meet the doctors and he altered the day of the visit. He intentionallyfalsifiedhis report by this, he has breached the ethics of the company. The Dilemma: The CEO called for a conference meeting with the HR director Bhavana Batra and the regional sales manager Shraddha Pillai about Uday’s matter. Bhavana put forward for firing Uday because of the strict policy on ethical issues and forgiving him would lead to loss of reputation of the company, but Shraddha made a point of giving Uday a second chance as he was an asset to the firm and firing him revenue. So Siddhant personally confronted Uday about the mistake over phone call. Uday admitted his mistake thathe did not meet the doctors on 21st of June but on different dates due to the mental pressure with his new born baby. Uday apologized for his mistake and requested for a second chance. Problem Statement:
  • 3. Novacib Company is very firm with their ethics, and they have zero tolerance towards ethical breaches. The reason behindthe falsification ofthe reportby their top salesperson has to be found. On other hand, he is a star performer who is adding fortune to the company. Finally, Uday is in dilemma where he had to lose company value and its career. Criteria:  Impact on the company.  The relationship between employees and Uday Madhav.  Anyone high department member query with Uday Madhav regarding the problem.  The revenue generated by Uday Madhav. Options:  Give Uday a second chance with a penalty.  Firing Uday from the company.  Official Discussion. Evaluation of Options: Giving Uday a second chance with a penalty would also be a good choice according tothe ethics and he would alsoacceptit for regretting his mistake,the other employees also become cautious on their work. Firing Uday from the company will be the best choice according to the company’s ethics, he falsified his report intentionally. The company’s revenue will surely go down because it is tough to replace the best salesperson; other employees will get a bad impression about the management and feel insecure about working. An official discussion between the officials will be giving more of positive feedback supporting Mr. Uday. This is because of what he is towards all other staffs. The reason of his falsified report has already been found and it is not going to be a very big mistake comparing what he just faced during the scheduled time. Recommendations: The company should pay attention to the employee’s mindset by conducting counselling sessions. And this case anyone can ask the actual reason from Uday on personal level and the most appropriate option would be to give Uday a second chance with a penalty. The penalty may be a fine. Uday is a star performer so he would not do it again. A person’s performance will improve when they are stress- free. Uday also should be warned for his action of falsifying the report.
  • 4. Action Plan: The company should form a team of counsellors to give counselling to the employees once a year. The HR department should pay attention to the employees’ situation and problems.
