Summary of Article One “ The Problem in Technology Education” The Author, Jim Flowers, discusses a problem he has found in technology education. Primarily he discussed “dogmatism”, an arrogant assertion of opinion. Generally, he discusses how the article “the” is used in technology education. He says “the” makes language singular and decisive. He also briefly talks about sexist language used in the classroom.
Summary of Article One “ Perhaps when we make a conscious effort to reduce our own use of sexist language, we become less sexist in our thinking and our belief systems, and in so doing we encourage this in others” (19). This passage shows what Jim Flowers is trying to accomplish with his article. He wants readers to understand the dangers of using frivolous language in the classroom.
Personal Reflection I did not make many personal connections to this article. Mainly because I have never noticed how language was used in a classroom or in education in general. I fond this article very hard to read. The author used the word “the” too many times. I lost focus and the drive to read. It was almost like he was talking about nothing and there wasn’t much of a point to the article.
Summary of Article Two “ Technology Adoption for Use in Instruction by Secondary Technology Education Teachers.” Authors, Joe Kotrlik and Donna Redmann, discuss not only available technology, but barriers and ways to adopt technology. They performed a study pertaining to how comfortable teachers are with using new technology. They discuss how teachers should be encouraged and supported to utilize the technology offered.
Summary of Article Two “ Efforts must be made to encourage and support technology teachers as they work to integrate technology in the teaching/learning process” (57) The authors of this article stress that in order for teachers to flourish teaching education, they must be supported by other teachers and by the administration of the school.
Personal Reflection I found this article to be very interesting to read. The findings authors presented from their research was informational. I had a connection to this article. Generally in my high school, teachers did not know how to either use the technology given to them, or they did not know how to teach us to use it. This caused confusion in most classes. Being able to have teachers understand available technology is important.
Summary of Article Three “ The Soul of Technology Education: Being Human in an Overly Rational World.” Scott Warner discusses the struggle that people have over the direction of technology, and how it is important to stay human in technology. Integrating human experience with technology is also discussed.
Summary of Article Three “ If technology education if to become a vital part of the general education curricula, it must recognize the importance of the humanistic aspects of teaching and learning. The author is showing how technology needs to remain a human affair. He stresses that it needs to be taught like other classes;with human interaction.
Personal Reflection This story was quite fun to read. The author made it interesting and informational at the same time. I understand where the author is coming from. Technology can seem like a cold subject, but with human interaction, it can be much more meaningful and fun.
Conclusion All of these articles are about small changes in technology education. They all point out small flaws in technology and give some solutions to the issues. The main theme being technology issues, I learned a few things. I learned that although technology is helpful, it is difficult to teach because of the language used, how it is presented, and how it is integrated by humans.
