This document analyzes the 9 frame structure of the opening scene of Avengers: Age of Ultron. The scene begins with a close up shot that builds suspense without revealing details. It then cuts to a low angle mid shot of two important characters. The next frame shows the characters holding hands in a close up. Soldiers are then shown running from a low angle. It quickly cuts to a shot of guns and soldiers from an eye angle. The camera then dollies forward as the soldiers run away. The final shots break the suspense by revealing the protagonists fighting enemies from a car in the snow. The camera follows the action throughout in a single long shot.

1. NINE FRAME
ANALYSIS

2. The following scene shows an object placed in the left part of the frame in a low key
lightning situation where the camera is stationary. The first shot is a close up of the
object that doesn’t reveal much information that develops a sense of suspense which
is one of the main themes of this movies. Its hard to tell the setting of the scene due
to the strong shadows and shallow depth of field.

3. It then cuts to the second frame which is low angle close mid shot also a two shot as
two of the characters have been reveled in the scene. The lightning is still lowkey as
the suspense continues. The camera now slighty tracks from left to right. The low
angle allows the viewer to understand that these two characters are important in the
following movie.

4. The next frame shows those two characters holding hands which is a cut in shown using
a close up of the hands where the camera is itself moving vertically up and down
(pedestal shot) his shot helps in raising the tension of the current scenario. The pace of
the scene cutting into another has slightly increased as well.

5. The next frame shows soldiers running towards the camera which is a low angle mid
close up of the feet of the soldiers. The camera now is slightly jerking to cope up with
the movements of the soldiers running but it still remains stationary. The shadows are
still strong hiding the characters appearance.

6. It then quickly cuts to the next shot which is an eye angle midshot that shows a rack of
guns and soldiers running past them and picking them up. The camera is facing the
light which is causing a silhouette to form. This scene shows that a fight is about to
happen and creates even more suspense.

7. The shot cuts to another shot in the same setting that creates an action match as it now
shows the top of the soldiers in an eye angle mid long shot running away from the
camera and out in the open where the camera dolly’s forward with a jerky motion. Very
cleverly this situation was revealed as the camera gradually moved upward in these
shots. This increases the feeling of anticipation as if something great is about to
happen.

8. The next shot reveals a new setting which is out in the open (in a forest with snow
everywhere) and a car rushes towards the camera with the protagonists of the film on
board. This long shot with the camera dolly’s backward is the first shot to fighting
sequence that has started. It properly reveals and breaks the suspense that was created
in the first shots. The shadows has been reduced.

9. That shot continues without a cut and the camera keeps moving backward and now it
pans to the left as the subjects on the vehicle are being followed by it. From a long shot
it advances into a mid long shot as the subjects come closer to it and it clearly shows
that they are fighting the enemies off.

10. This whole opening fight sequence is a single shot in which the camera very creatively
traverses around the setting and reveals different characters in the location such as this
scene in which this character enters the frame from above and the camera follows it and
remains in a low angle long shot to show the dominance and power of the subject .
