Nicholas Winton was a British humanitarian born in 1909 in London to German Jewish parents. During World War II, Winton organized the rescue of 699 mostly Jewish children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia by arranging for their transportation to Britain. He kept his role in this rescue mission secret for over 50 years until his story was featured on a BBC television program in 1988. For his humanitarian efforts saving hundreds of children from the Holocaust, Winton received numerous honors and awards, and in 2002 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
