Niantic Lab was founded by John Hanke in 2012 and developed its first augmented reality game called Field Trip. In 2014, Niantic released its second game Ingress which used ads and sponsorships for revenue. Niantic's most successful game to date has been Pokemon Go, released in 2016, which earns revenue through in-app purchases with over 29% of players making purchases. Pokemon Go reached unprecedented popularity with over 21 million daily active users at its peak, though usage has declined since its initial launch.
