Welcome to the new Mizzima Weekly !
Mizzima Media Group is pleased to announce the relaunch of Mizzima Weekly. Mizzima is dedicated to helping our readers and viewers keep up to date on the latest developments in Myanmar and related to Myanmar by offering analysis and insight into the subjects that matter. Our websites and our social media channels provide readers and viewers with up-to-the-minute and up-to-date news, which we don’t necessarily need to replicate in our Mizzima Weekly magazine. But where we see a gap is in providing more analysis, insight and in-depth coverage of Myanmar, that is of particular interest to a range of readers.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

New Members and Old Sponsors
August is our International New Membership month, now what does that mean? Well,
for starters, each member need to have a look at his or her list of friends. We know they
are great friends, but will they make better Rotarians? If your answer is yes, then it is
time to talk to them about Rotary.
Invite them to a function or a project so they can see what being a Rotarian is all about.
Should you be talking to a friend of a friend, remember that one very important
question, “what is your passion?” Allowing people to do what they are passionate about
will make them stay.
That brings us to the second part of the heading, “Old Sponsors” We are not talking age
here, but time spend as an active Rotarian! Being a Rotarian also means you need to
educate a new member about the ways of Rotary. It is a bit like being introduced to the
in-laws, you have no clue how they conduct their business until someone explain it to
you. Being a sponsor of a new member is great, this is when you tell more of your
Rotary stories and what makes you a passionate Rotarian.
Our club goal is to reach 200 members by the year 2020. The success of this story is in the hands of
all the members. Should each one bring one new Rotarian to the club, we will reach the millennium
mark. Should we be so lucky and all the members do the same again, we will be at 200 by this time
next year!
This goal is reachable with the buy in of all our current members. Let’s grow our club and Rotary at
the same time. Most of all, Let’s have fun growing Rotary!!
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concern?
Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENNEFICIAL to all concern?
August 2016
President A. Mostert

District Governor Visit
We are proud to welcome two new members to the club. They are both old
Rotarians and very active on District level.
From Gaborone in Botswana, welcome to PP William Lee, William is also the
District Governor Representative for region 1 (Botswana) and a member of the
Membership & Extension committee under the chairmanship of PDG Kobla
Quashie.
Our other new member is from Pretoria in Gauteng, we welcome Johan Snyman,
he is the chairperson of the Rotary Friendship Exchange. Gentlemen, you have
now entered the next level of being a Rotarian. This is the danger zone, the
members of the E-Club are all passionate Rotarians and hard workers.
Fasten your seatbelts and fly with us, we are better than Emirates and Kulula does
not feature at all!

3. Mandela Day 2016
This year was no different than the previous ones. People from all walks of life made the time to spend
67 minutes doing good. Members of the club were equally active in their bit for Mandela day. Here are
some photos of a few activities that happened on the day.

6. This years blanket drive proved to be another success. A Big thank
you goes to Sanlam and BNI for their generous support Many of the
club members also sponsored blankets for the needy and in view of the
cold weather, this came in handy!
President Annemarie Mostert and members Theo & Maize Buttress
and Andre van Eeden handed out blankets during the Three2six pro-
ject. Thank you to all who participated and gave time and money to
warm someone this winter.
Loads of blankets were collected by the participating clubs in and
around Johannesburg. The contributions made by the clubs just keep
on growing every year.

District Grant
Blanket Drive 2016
The club has secured a District grant of $500 for the soccer program run
by Theo and Maize. Well done you two!!
This is just another example of how you can grow your funds for a project.
Five rand in your pocket can become twenty with the District grant.
Should you be lucky and have another international club involved and you
submit for a Global grant, that twenty can grow to sixty!
This is just random totals to indicate the power of the Foundation. This is
also the reason we need to contribute to the Foundation. PDG Francis
Callard is well known for his “Sir, may I please have more??” (of your
money that is)
In reality, it is the best darn bank in the world!! One where you can get a
lot more from than what you have contributed to.

7. As we continue to fight Polio
Finding the occasional case of
polio outside Afghanistan and
Pakistan, the only countries
that have yet to eradicate it, is
not unusual. In 2014, just before the World Cup brought travelers from
all over the planet to Brazil, the country identified poliovirus in the
sewage system at São Paulo’s Viracopos International Airport.
Those are frustrating examples for the thousands of people around the
world working to eradicate polio. The fight has come a long way, but it
is far from over.
The vaccine itself isn’t the biggest expense in a vaccination campaign
(in fact, Rotary rarely funds vaccines). It’s the distribution of the vaccine
– transportation and staffing, that costs so much. In January, money
donated by Rotarians covered the costs of a Cameroun vaccination
campaign that involved 34,000 vaccinators and 21,000 rental cars,
which volunteers used to canvass neighborhood's and travel from
home to home administering the vaccine.
Funds also went to more than 3,700 town criers and 45 radio spots in
Chad, to more than 14,000 local guides and 500 clan leaders to ensure
that the children of nomads were vaccinated in Ethiopia, and to provide
training and support for 60,000 community volunteer vaccinators in
Afghanistan.
Our club has donated annually...and we need to do more to rid the
world of this disease.
Rotary and ShelterBox renewed their partnership
Rotary and disaster relief charity ShelterBox renewed a
three-year agreement to provide immediate, lifesaving
assistance to survivors of natural disasters and conflict.
Rotary clubs worldwide have mobilized to provide immediate
relief to thousands of displaced people quickly and efficiently
with ShelterBox for 16 years. To date, Rotary members have
donated US$48 million to provide shelter for families in need –
40 percent of ShelterBox's total of US$119.6 million raised.
