Wishing all of
our members
a happy and
healthy 2018!
In the 4 short years since our Club was chartered, we have managed to achieve the RI
Presidential Citation; we have had District and International appointments; and we now
have confirmation that PP Annemarie Mostert has been appointed 2020-21 District
Governor! Congratulations - we are so proud of you!
Continuing with news of our awesome
team..... PDG (and President Elect)
Shirley Downie has accepted an invitation
from TRF Chair (2018-19) Ron Burton, to
serve as Vice Chair of the Fund Development
Committee.
Shirley is currently serving a three year term
on this committee (Jul 16 to Jun 19).
Congratulations Shirley, on a well deserved
honour.
We know that you will do an outstanding job.
The next three years will be exciting,
challenging, and exceptionally rewarding. Your
fellow Club members will be supporting you and
Hans all the way.
We also look forward to working with your DG
Ann, Angela Norris (RC Benoni Aurora). She is
an exceptional Rotary Ann, who has received
many awards for her outstanding humanitarian
work.
DGDN Annemarie, we look forward to hearing
your strategies and plans, together with Hans
and Angela in the years ahead.

Cape Town Water Crisis
After nearly three consecutive years of
drought, Cape Town is in danger of becoming
the first major metropolis in the world to run
out of water.
The news from our Club members in the Cape
is not encouraging, and many Cape Town
residents are stockpiling supplies, fearing that
an even graver situation awaits.
Some of our Club members in Gauteng are
involved in initiatives to get water to these
stricken areas. We applaud their efforts, and
pray that Cape Town gets some much needed
relief in the coming autumn/winter months.

Gawie Lotter for his support

Rotarians Dr Wilma and Prof
Gawie have both worked with
New Beginningz for many years
and when we visited the centre
last year, the love they have for
the toddlers was clear.
The Lotter couple are highly
respected by the invaluable
staff there.
Well done PPs Wilma and

We were thrilled to have the opportunity to share some fellowship, as
well as some brainstorming with Rtn Martha Deacon, one of our E-Club
members from Canada. Martha is also the Founder and CEO of The
Townships Project, and was particularly looking at financing for Rotary
Means Business Projects.
We held an informal gathering where Martha introduced herself and
discussed her goals in more detail. There was a chance for all in
attendance to explain their interests. It was most inspiring!
Martha also visited some of the projects run by fellow club members.

7. DONATION
OF A
CONTAINER
TO THE
SPCA/DBV
IN MIDRAND
The containers allocated
to the Humanitarian
Centre are converted in
amazing projects - here
is another example!
The Midrand SPCA had a
burglary and lost
everything. A generous
Midrand resident donated
R 12,000 to the centre to
ensure the SPCA has a
secure haven going
forward.
The container will be
painted and spruced up
in the next few months.
The request was
proposed through PDG
Shirley.

8. A request for beds and bedding for a
recovery centre was made by Mariam,
and the response was heartwarming.
PDG Shirley arranged for sheets, towels,
slippers and toiletries to be collected from
the Humanitarian Centre.
DGDN Annemarie helped tremendously
with her donation of R 10,000 for beds.
January saw the return
from France of our long
term exchange student
Gretel Buttress. The news
we got during the year
showed what a fantastic
experience it was, and we
look forward to hearing all
about the trip.

9. RYLA in Magoebaskloof
This RYLA Camp in Magoebaskloof is an official sanctioned D9400 RYLA and takes place
at the RYLA Basecamp in Magoebaskloof. It has been designed to create a structured
environment with a balanced mix between outdoor activities and indoor presentations.
Topics are tailored to age groups in attendance, but all programs emphasise leadership
skills, personal development, emotional development and citizenship. The focus is on
experiential learning where participants have the
opportunity to break away from the normal classroom environment and learn through
various physical and outdoor games and processes.
This is a fun RYLA presented to the youth, by the youth! Based on the WARRIORS

Koos Bronkhorst solo exhibition : E-club
member, Rtn Koos Bronkhorst was born in
Krugersdorp, Gauteng in 1957. He grew up in
Pretoria. His paintings feature in private
collections in Belgium, Italy, Australia, New
Zeeland and many other countries. Rose-
Innes and Adriaan Boshoff had the greatest
impact on Koos’ approach to art. He gets the
greatest satisfaction by sharing his knowledge
and skills with others, presenting art
workshops all over S.A.
He has mostly private exhibitions but has also had exhibitions at the following: Pretoria
Kunskamer art gallery, where his works are permanently on exhibition; Alice Art Gallery,
Ryan Laubscher & Trent Gallery, Johan van Heerden Gallery as well as in Galleries in
Constantia, CT & Smithfield, CT. Koos beliefs that art belongs to everybody. Art is also
therapy without equal. So join Koos at Pretoria Kunskamer art gallery from 15 February
until 10 March 2018. The artist day is hosted on Saturday 3 March, when you can meet
Koos Bronkhorst in person and discuss his work, ask all the questions you have been
wondering about and get to know the artist behind the paintings. The event will run from
11h00 to 13h00.

RIPE Barry Rassin launched his theme
for the 2018-19 Rotary year, and I
have no doubt that many Rotarians
and Rotary Anns are inspired by his
choice.
PDG Shirley Downie is the incoming
club president, and a lot of thought
and support has gone into identifying
the various committee chairpersons
and vice chairpersons and Shirley
thanks everyone that has accepted
the responsiblity and role.
Our young club is an inspiration to so
many community leaders, young and
old alike. We have completed
fantastic projects, independently and
collectively, and we have no doubt
this will continue.
As with any club, plans need to be
made well in advance and this year is
no exception. PE Shirley and office
bearers will be attending the official
District training sessions in February
and March.
In the meantime, PE Shirley has
invited the incoming office bearers to
attend a strategic planning session in
May, at her home. Invitations have
been sent to those who are involved.
It's wonderful that our newly
appointed DGDN Annemarie Mostert
will also be attending. We are
certainly very proud of her
appointment. The club has a lot of
work ahead of us in the years to
follow, but we're a vibrant club, and
we look forward to the challenge!
