CLASSROOM
HIGHLIGHTS
Each month several teachers
and students provide a Class
Highlights report to the Board
of Trustees and parts are shared
in Family Newsletters.
Room 10 is a class of
enthusiastic 5 year olds. All
OUR children are very keen to
learn and work hard to achieve
their learning goals, and have
made considerable progress.
The children enjoyed Term 2’s
concept which was “Past and
Present”. The trip on the
Glenbrook Steam Train was a
highlight and this gave the
children first hand experiences
of things from the Past. It is
always so encouraging to hear
the children who do not
communicate readily, speak
freely and with enthusiasm
while on these type of trips.
The train trip was a first for
many of the children.
To wind up Term 2’s concept
we had a Grandparents Day
where all the junior school
children invited their
Grandparents to school to share
their learning about “Past and
Present”. The children
performed Folk Dances then the
Grandparents came back to
class. The children asked
Grandparents questions about
their past, especially when they
went to school. Lots of the
Grandparents had many
interesting stories to tell.
This is what Room 10 children
say they really like about
learning:
They enjoy Reading and are
making pleasing progress in this
area. They like reading the little
readers and are very keen to
learn their letter sounds and the
basic sight words. Many love to
practise writing these words.
They like to write stories about
things special to them and are
keen to achieve their learning
goals. After they finish writing
their stories they can self-assess
their work to see if they have
been successful.
The children like to practise
Handwriting. They are learning
to form their letters correctly
using the Magic Caterpillar
formations. We have new
blackboards in the classroom
and practise forming letters on
these.
In Art the children have been
learning how to sew. They were
successful in creating a self-
portrait photo for Mother’s day
and a teddy bear and also learnt
how to do weaving.
This term we are learning about
the concept of “Movement”.
One highlight so far was the
visit from the Puppet Man who
put on a circus show with
marionette puppets. The
children were very intrigued to
see how these puppets work and
were able to have a turn with the
puppets.
Earlier this term it was Maori
Language week and the
children learnt new Te Reo,
including names of the days,
counting, greetings and ways to
answer the question “Who are
you?” - “Ko wai koe?” They
have also learnt some new
Maori action songs.
As well as learning Te Reo the
children learn greetings from a
variety of countries, and they
answer the roll with a different
greeting each week.
Room 10 is a busy classroom
where lots of learning, personal
development and fun is
happening every day.
