This document summarizes a collaboration between two teachers at West Auburn High School to start a pen pal letter writing project between their students and students in Uganda. The teachers secured funding and had their students read a memoir about a boy soldier in Africa. Students then created art and symbols from the book. They also learned drum making and African jewelry making. The classes wrote 22 letters to students in Uganda and received 126 letters back. This led to a campaign to get more students involved in the pen pal project. Feedback was very positive, with one teacher saying the letters from Uganda students convinced him to get his class involved. Plans were discussed to continue the project into the next school year.
