2013 FALL NEWSLETTER
Community
is at the heart
of
Catholic
Education
Sunday August 18, Our Catholic
School community came together to
welcome back their old friends and to
greet new ones.“ I would love to
create this tradition where everyone
can get re-acquainted before the first
day of school. It puts kids at ease and
the parents do not have to worry
about stress on the first day.
The music department also raised
$1,200.00. ThankYou All!”

From Our Principal
Dear Friends,
Back to school is always an exciting and stimulating time. It is fun to see old friends
and meet new ones. Even the school work is fresh and new. Fall can be a prime time for
learning. We are happy this year to introduce the ipad into our instructional tool arsenal.
Our teachers received their ipads last January. They have become familiar with the many
available applications that can augment and facilitate instruction. Now it is time for our stu-
dents to use them in the classroom.
In October we plan to issue a school owned ipad to each 7th
and 8th
grade student. The ipad will be theirs to use
for the school year, under the direction of their teachers. Additional ipads have been purchased for use in our other
classrooms, three per grade. These ipads will be used in learning centers within the classroom, or in other ways as the
teacher sees fit. We will also have a mobile set of 30 ipads that may be used by an entire class for selected lessons.
We want to stay current with technology and use every available means to enhance our students’ learning ex-
periences. The sheer number of educational applications for ipad is an indication of its potential for creativity and in-
novation.
Our school has Taste of the Town to thank for these very costly devices. A small school such as ours would not
be able to afford such items. But year after year our parents produce this fantastic event which earns so much money
for our school. So we thank you again for the sacrifice of your time and the gift of your talents. On behalf of the stu-
dents of St. Andrew Catholic School, I thank you!
Sincerely ,
Molly Halasz
Our Children have a special
opportunity to bring home a
consecrated chalice for the
week. Families are
encouraged to pray for an
increase in vocations and to
allow us to know our calling
that God has for each and
every one of us.
St. Andrew Catholic School has begun a
Mercy Works Project this year that involves our entire school family. A different class
will lead the project each month collecting specific items to assist families involved in
the Help 4 Kids program. Fourth Grade has collected school supplies and delivered
them on September 20. The class collected almost 700 items – notebooks, pencils,
crayons, book bags, markers, glue, folders and calculators for needy families in Horry
County. The students have been excited to give, excited to count and organize, and
happy to deliver the supplies. They have been talking about fulfilling their roles as
priest, prophet, and king knowing that when we all perform a Work of Mercy, we are
following Jesus the ultimate priest, prophet, and king.
Mrs. Jones
On the afternoon of September 20, Kindergarten celebrated some special people.
The class invited their grandparents or a special guest to spend the afternoon with
them. Kindergarten treated their guests to an afternoon of singing and dancing and
special snacks.They made some special
gifts and there were hugs and kisses all
around! This is a yearly tradition that cele-
brates the people in our lives who add so
much love and are great example to us as
we grow.Thank you to all who help us be-
come well-rounded, Christ-like individuals
who will one day offer so much to the
world we live in!

Ms. Trudy Sauvageau is thrilled to be
teaching at St. Andrews. She is our new
middle school language arts teacher, and 7th
grade homeroom teacher. Her ninth grade
English teacher, Sister Mary Helen, was her
inspiration to become an English teacher and
gave her a love for Shakespeare. Ms.
Sauvageau is a product of the diocese of
Charleston Catholic education, attending
catholic schools for all twelve years. Her de-
grees are a B.A. in English Literature from
the University of South Carolina and a M.A.
in Adolescent Psychology from Vermont Col-
lege of Norwich University. She is state certi-
fied in guidance counseling for grades K-12
and by the end of the month, she will have
her American Board Certification through the
US Department of Education, leading to a
State Professional Certification in English.
For the past fourteen years, Ms
Sauvageau taught ninth grade at Byrnes, a
private school in Florence. She understands
and knows what her students need to be pre-
pared for high school. Meeting and exceed-
ing the Diocesan Common Core guidelines,
she helps students learn how to outline, peer
review and write multiple paragraph essays.
She teaches grammar, context, vocabulary
support and writing. In her English class,
seventy-five percent of the work is focused
on writing to prepare students for their sec-
ondary course load. Personally, she enjoys
writing poetry and short stories.
Ms. Sauvageau has been a guidance coun-
selor for grades 3-12, with a focus on 9-12.
Prior to high school teaching, she was an
owner of a dance studio teaching ballet, tap
and jazz. At Byrnes Academy, she taught
middle and high school dance.
Her classroom has a friendly atmos-
phere. Perhaps due to her psychology back-
ground, she has created a warm, inviting en-
vironment. The first thing you notice is the
aroma of cinnamon from her Glade Plug-Ins,
which she believes creates an environment
conducive to writing. When interviewing her
students about what they liked about their
new teacher, they all chorused “she is very
funny.”

We are proud to announce that the Mathematics Education Depart-
ment at CCU has been awarded a one year SC Department of Edu-
cation grant to offer long term professional development in the
Common Core Standards for Mathematics. This is designed for Kin-
dergarten through 5th
grade teachers in our school, St. Michael
School, HolyTrinity School, andWaccamaw Elementary in Conway.
This opportunity will allow our teachers to receive instruction in the
best methods for delivering instruction in Math. For three half days
in October, three in January, and three in March they will travel to the
university and take classes. This is a wonderful time to learn new
skills, then bring them back to the classrooms for a test drive!
Catherine Scott, an assistant professor of elementary math education
at CCU, believes that this kind of extended professional development
will translate into real achievement gains among the students in our
classrooms. The opportunities for collaboration with teachers of the
same grade level from other schools will be an extra benefit for our
teachers. We are so fortunate to have been included in this grant
which promises to enhance our elementary math program. We are
also thankful to our teachers for their open minds and teachable
spirits!
Coastal Carolina University &
St. Andrew Catholic School Partnership
St. Andrew Catholic School Board is a group of dedicated, hardworking parents who are working to make
things happen for our school. The standing committees include Facilities, Technology, Public Relations,
Communication, Teaching and Learning, and Catholic Identity.
In June our new Board met to set goals for the new school year. Here are some goal items from each com-
mittee:
1. Catholic Identity: We are working to make our service projects more meaningful for our students.
(Third Page) To help foster vocations, we have begun our chalice/bear program. (Second Page)
Chairs: Mary Hollingsworth & Cheryl Sedota
2. Teaching and Learning: Our faculty is helping to create and revise our new math curriculum, which is
collaborative effort between our Diocesan teachers & principals, and representatives from University of
Notre Dame. This new curriculum will meet the Common Core Standards, but also consider our current
diocesan curriculum and segments of Catholic Identity. Chair: Molly Halasz
3. Facilities: This committee continues to evaluate our plant for safety and maintenance concerns. Plans
are formulated at this level for upcoming renovation projects.
Chair: Rob Wilfong
4. Communications: This committee has planned and executed this first newsletter! It will be a quarterly
publication that will feature stories of interest about our school.
Chairs: Terrianne Riga & Meg Shavitz
5. Public Relations: This committee will contact the media with stories of interest regarding our school.
Another goal for this year is to create a new school brochure.
Chairs: Bob Natale & Stacey Pellicci
6. Technology: This committee has researched the uses and feasibility of our ipad program. Work on
this program will be ongoing and we discover new uses for this technology, and consider further up-
grades to the technology capabilities of our school.
Chair: Stacey Pellicci

2013 Fall Newsletter

  • 1. SUNDAE FUNDAY SOCIAL A SUCCESS! 2013 FALL NEWSLETTER Community is at the heart of Catholic Education Sunday August 18, Our Catholic School community came together to welcome back their old friends and to greet new ones.“ I would love to create this tradition where everyone can get re-acquainted before the first day of school. It puts kids at ease and the parents do not have to worry about stress on the first day. The music department also raised $1,200.00. ThankYou All!” Mrs.Young faith ~ love ~ learning Catholic School
  • 2. From Our Principal Dear Friends, Back to school is always an exciting and stimulating time. It is fun to see old friends and meet new ones. Even the school work is fresh and new. Fall can be a prime time for learning. We are happy this year to introduce the ipad into our instructional tool arsenal. Our teachers received their ipads last January. They have become familiar with the many available applications that can augment and facilitate instruction. Now it is time for our stu- dents to use them in the classroom. In October we plan to issue a school owned ipad to each 7th and 8th grade student. The ipad will be theirs to use for the school year, under the direction of their teachers. Additional ipads have been purchased for use in our other classrooms, three per grade. These ipads will be used in learning centers within the classroom, or in other ways as the teacher sees fit. We will also have a mobile set of 30 ipads that may be used by an entire class for selected lessons. We want to stay current with technology and use every available means to enhance our students’ learning ex- periences. The sheer number of educational applications for ipad is an indication of its potential for creativity and in- novation. Our school has Taste of the Town to thank for these very costly devices. A small school such as ours would not be able to afford such items. But year after year our parents produce this fantastic event which earns so much money for our school. So we thank you again for the sacrifice of your time and the gift of your talents. On behalf of the stu- dents of St. Andrew Catholic School, I thank you! Sincerely , Molly Halasz Our Children have a special opportunity to bring home a consecrated chalice for the week. Families are encouraged to pray for an increase in vocations and to allow us to know our calling that God has for each and every one of us.
  • 3. St. Andrew Catholic School has begun a Mercy Works Project this year that involves our entire school family. A different class will lead the project each month collecting specific items to assist families involved in the Help 4 Kids program. Fourth Grade has collected school supplies and delivered them on September 20. The class collected almost 700 items – notebooks, pencils, crayons, book bags, markers, glue, folders and calculators for needy families in Horry County. The students have been excited to give, excited to count and organize, and happy to deliver the supplies. They have been talking about fulfilling their roles as priest, prophet, and king knowing that when we all perform a Work of Mercy, we are following Jesus the ultimate priest, prophet, and king. Mrs. Jones On the afternoon of September 20, Kindergarten celebrated some special people. The class invited their grandparents or a special guest to spend the afternoon with them. Kindergarten treated their guests to an afternoon of singing and dancing and special snacks. They made some special gifts and there were hugs and kisses all around! This is a yearly tradition that cele- brates the people in our lives who add so much love and are great example to us as we grow.Thank you to all who help us be- come well-rounded, Christ-like individuals who will one day offer so much to the world we live in! • 4. Ms. Trudy Sauvageau is thrilled to be teaching at St. Andrews. She is our new middle school language arts teacher, and 7th grade homeroom teacher. Her ninth grade English teacher, Sister Mary Helen, was her inspiration to become an English teacher and gave her a love for Shakespeare. Ms. Sauvageau is a product of the diocese of Charleston Catholic education, attending catholic schools for all twelve years. Her de- grees are a B.A. in English Literature from the University of South Carolina and a M.A. in Adolescent Psychology from Vermont Col- lege of Norwich University. She is state certi- fied in guidance counseling for grades K-12 and by the end of the month, she will have her American Board Certification through the US Department of Education, leading to a State Professional Certification in English. For the past fourteen years, Ms Sauvageau taught ninth grade at Byrnes, a private school in Florence. She understands and knows what her students need to be pre- pared for high school. Meeting and exceed- ing the Diocesan Common Core guidelines, she helps students learn how to outline, peer review and write multiple paragraph essays. She teaches grammar, context, vocabulary support and writing. In her English class, seventy-five percent of the work is focused on writing to prepare students for their sec- ondary course load. Personally, she enjoys writing poetry and short stories. Ms. Sauvageau has been a guidance coun- selor for grades 3-12, with a focus on 9-12. Prior to high school teaching, she was an owner of a dance studio teaching ballet, tap and jazz. At Byrnes Academy, she taught middle and high school dance. Her classroom has a friendly atmos- phere. Perhaps due to her psychology back- ground, she has created a warm, inviting en- vironment. The first thing you notice is the aroma of cinnamon from her Glade Plug-Ins, which she believes creates an environment conducive to writing. When interviewing her students about what they liked about their new teacher, they all chorused “she is very funny.”

  • 6. We are proud to announce that the Mathematics Education Depart- ment at CCU has been awarded a one year SC Department of Edu- cation grant to offer long term professional development in the Common Core Standards for Mathematics. This is designed for Kin- dergarten through 5th grade teachers in our school, St. Michael School, HolyTrinity School, andWaccamaw Elementary in Conway. This opportunity will allow our teachers to receive instruction in the best methods for delivering instruction in Math. For three half days in October, three in January, and three in March they will travel to the university and take classes. This is a wonderful time to learn new skills, then bring them back to the classrooms for a test drive! Catherine Scott, an assistant professor of elementary math education at CCU, believes that this kind of extended professional development will translate into real achievement gains among the students in our classrooms. The opportunities for collaboration with teachers of the same grade level from other schools will be an extra benefit for our teachers. We are so fortunate to have been included in this grant which promises to enhance our elementary math program. We are also thankful to our teachers for their open minds and teachable spirits! Facilities: This committee continues to evaluate our plant for safety and maintenance concerns. Plans are formulated at this level for upcoming renovation projects. Chair: Rob Wilfong 4.
