• New Media is interactive forms of
communication that use the Internet,
including podcasts, RSS feeds, social networks,
text messaging, blogs, wikis, virtual worlds
and more.
3. History of the Radio
• The first radio signals were sent in 1896 by an Italian man Guglielmo Marconi via telegraph
messenger.
• Marconi told the Italian Gov. about his invention, but was declined. He than moved to
England and it quickly became a hit.
• For the first time in 1919, shortwave radio was developed.
• In 1920 KDKA broadcasts the first regular licensed radio broadcast out of Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania.
• After that, radio broadcasts were being broadcasted all over the United States, especially in
bigger cities.
• In 1952 Sony came out with the first transistor radio in AM/FM.
• Today , there are over 33,000 radio stations in the world, 12,000 in the US alone.
4. Radio goes online
• First internet radio stations appeared in the mid 90’s, but had poor sound
quality and not a lot of popularity.
• By the end of the 90’s there were several internet radio stations and music
cites online.
• Once 2000’s came around, online radio stations sky-rocketed, allowing
people to listen to a certain genre of music, or simply listen to there
favorite station.
• Online radio is the result of new media and the constant advancement in
technology.
6. Issues/concerns of Online radio
• One major issue radio stations face today is making
sure that technology matches with there users.
• Issues of sound quality, for example if a users
connection is poor, the feed will be choppy and
pause
• Another issue is Radio Music Ripping, in the past
people have ripped music off of online stations by
saving the song in an audio file, making that a legal
issue.
