This document outlines the agenda and activities for a New Teacher Induction Program. The program aims to provide support to new teachers to help develop professional relationships and retain them. Activities include getting acquainted, learning about Marzano's instructional strategies, a homework strategy involving parents, an open discussion, and gaining knowledge of effective organizational skills. Teachers will complete an evaluation at the end.

Who is David PEDDER?
Professor David Pedder is Professor of Education and Director of Research at the University of Leicester, School of Education. Between 2000 and 2010 he was a Research Associate, Senior Research Associate, Lecturer and later Senior Lecturer at the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education. His teaching and research interests are concerned with understanding processes, practices, perspectives and conditions that support improvement in the quality of teaching and learning in classrooms, schools and networks.
About the workshop
Understanding the effectiveness of teachers’ professional development hasbeen an important focus for researchers and policy-makers because of its potential for contributing to improvements in school development and the quality of teachers’ support for enhancing students’ learning experiences. The focus and purpose of this exclusive workshop was to critically consider different professional learning approaches to improve the quality of teachers’ and students’ learning in the classroom. We explored and analysed the patterns of professional learning orientation among teachers in the schools of England and compared different practical strategies for increasing the effectiveness of professional learning for improving the quality of student’s classroom learning.

•TLW discuss organization within the classroom as one
strategy for teacher organizational skills.
7. New Teacher Induction Program

• Location: School Cafeteria
•Beginning Time: 8:00 a.m.
• Ending Time: 10:00 a.m.
8. Activity 1: Meet and Greet
• Purpose- The purpose is for new teachers to
become acquainted.
• Description- Teachers try to figure out one
another based upon descriptions.
• Steps- A description is read. Teachers try to
decipher who the description represents.
• Estimated Time- 10 minutes
Activity 2: Marzano’s Instructional Strategies
• Purpose- The purpose is to introduce New
Teachers to Marzano’s Instructional Strategies
• Description- An overview of each of Marzano’s
Strategies will be provided.
• Steps- Teachers in the audience volunteer to role
play different scenarios to illustrate each of
Marzano’s Instructional Strategies.
• Estimated Time- 30 minutes

10. Activity 3: Marzano’s Homework and
Practice Strategy
• Purpose- The purpose is to reduce excessive
amounts of homework and to involve parents in the
homework process.
• Description- Teachers are given a homework
assignment graphic organizer on how to involve
parents in the homework process.
• Steps- Teachers choose a partner. One teacher plays
the role of the student and the other plays the role of
the parent. The student takes a timed math fact
practice for homework, while the parent takes the
time, records and initials next to it.
• Estimated Time- 30 minutes
Activity 4: Questions/Suggestions
• Purpose- The purpose is to allow teachers to
provide constructive feedback.
• Description- Teachers will ask questions or
provide suggestions on ways to implement
strategies.
• Steps- Begin with a prompt question on teachers
can implement in their classroom. Allow
teachers to provide constructive feedback about
the implementation of the strategy in their
classroom.
• Estimated Time- 10 minutes

Activity 5: Read-Pair-Share and Open Forum on Organizational Skills
• Purpose- The purpose is to gain knowledge of the effective organizational skills
for teachers.
• Description- Facilitator identifies organizational skills and teachers discuss
effective methods on ways to implement the skills.
• Steps- Facilitator begins organizational skills packet that is distributed to each
teacher. Teachers read the data, pair up with the person next to them and share
important concepts of organization. Teachers then discuss and identify the
organizational skills that they plan to implement in their classrooms.
• Estimated Time- 20 minute
