The OPEC Secretary General says there is no need to panic about recent declines in oil prices. While OPEC members previously said they wanted oil prices around $100 per barrel, the Secretary General says fundamentals have not changed and OPEC will still average $100 per barrel for 2014. He notes that low prices will reduce competing supplies in the long run. The Secretary General also states that by 2020, OPEC must be ready to produce 40 million barrels per day of oil and 50 million barrels per day of liquids.
Oman aims to maintain its oil production levels of around 950,000 barrels per day for the next 2-3 years through improved and enhanced oil recovery techniques. The Oman oil minister also expressed support for ending fuel subsidies, which are currently unsustainable, while acknowledging this is a politically sensitive issue. Abu Dhabi has received strong interest from international firms to participate in its largest oilfields under revised terms as it takes full control, and may partner with major Asian energy buyers in addition to continuing with Western oil companies.
- A consortium of Heerema-AF has been awarded a letter of intent for the removal and disposal of the Murchison oil platform in the North Sea off the coast of the UK.
- The Murchison platform is one of the largest steel jacket platforms in the North Sea, installed in 1980 and ceased production in March 2014.
- The contract covers the engineering, preparation, removal and disposal of over 37,000 tons of topsides and jacket structure, with offshore work starting in early 2016 and completion by 2020.

A tanker carrying crude oil from Iraqi Kurdistan has arrived near Galveston, Texas, where it will likely offload its cargo for delivery to US refineries. This sale of Kurdish oil could anger Baghdad and raise questions about US policy. Additionally, KBR was awarded a contract to provide engineering services for an offshore oil field development project in Abu Dhabi, and India paid the third installment of $550 million that was owed to Iran for oil imports.

A minor oil spill occurred off the coast of Abu Dhabi near Saadiyat Island. Authorities responded quickly to contain the spill and conduct cleanup operations. While the cause is still under investigation, minor spills are relatively common from oil refineries and tankers illegally dumping oil. The spill highlights the environmental risks of accidental spills from marine oil pollution. Saudi Arabia aims to increase petrochemical exports to 100 million tons by 2016 through partnerships like the country partnership with the ArabPlast exhibition. The WETEX exhibition in Dubai focusing on water, energy, and environment has seen large growth over 16 years in terms of exhibitors, exhibition space, and visitors.
The UAE's deputy energy chief says OPEC does not need to change its oil production ceiling of 30 million barrels per day as oil prices of around $110 per barrel are acceptable. Natural gas demand in Oman is expected to grow 10-15% in 2014 due to new power and industrial projects.

A strike by Kuwaiti oil workers has significantly reduced the country's oil production and refining capacity. Kuwait's crude production fell 60% to 1.1 million barrels per day and its refineries are operating at less than 60% capacity due to the strike. The strike is protesting proposed pay cuts for workers. It has taken over 1.7 million barrels per day of supply off the global market, exceeding the current supply surplus. Kuwaiti authorities are working to restart facilities and raise production and processing rates while negotiating with strikers.
The UAE is confident it can maintain a budget surplus until 2019 despite falling oil prices, though the IMF warns the country will need to use foreign assets to fund developments. The UAE economy minister said the country can absorb economic shocks in the short term, and does not currently need to use foreign reserves. However, the IMF said lower oil prices put the UAE economy at risk. The document discusses efforts by the European Union to diversify its natural gas sources and reduce dependence on Russia. The EU is hoping that future gas imports from Iran, through proposed pipeline projects in the Southern Corridor, can help meet this goal. Lifting of sanctions on Iran as part of a potential nuclear deal could allow Iranian gas to start flowing to Europe. However, significant challenges remain in developing the infrastructure to transport Iranian and other Caspian gas to European markets.
