A minor oil spill occurred off the coast of Abu Dhabi near Saadiyat Island. Authorities responded quickly to contain the spill and conduct cleanup operations. While the cause is still under investigation, minor spills are relatively common from oil refineries and tankers illegally dumping oil. The spill highlights the environmental risks of accidental spills from marine oil pollution. Saudi Arabia aims to increase petrochemical exports to 100 million tons by 2016 through partnerships like the country partnership with the ArabPlast exhibition. The WETEX exhibition in Dubai focusing on water, energy, and environment has seen large growth over 16 years in terms of exhibitors, exhibition space, and visitors.

The OPEC Secretary General says there is no need to panic about recent declines in oil prices. While OPEC members previously said they wanted oil prices around $100 per barrel, the Secretary General says fundamentals have not changed and OPEC will still average $100 per barrel for 2014. He notes that low prices will reduce competing supplies in the long run. The Secretary General also states that by 2020, OPEC must be ready to produce 40 million barrels per day of oil and 50 million barrels per day of liquids.

Separately, South Korea is set to become the second Asian nation after Japan to make payments to Iran for oil imports under the interim nuclear deal between Iran and world powers. Hyundai Merchant Marine also plans to sell its LNG transport business to a local investment firm for $1 billion as part of efforts to pay off debt.
Saudi Arabia exported 1.84 billion barrels of oil in the first eight months of 2014, generating $199.17 billion in revenues. Domestic consumption accounted for 23% of total output. Global oil supplies remain abundant while demand is weak, exerting downward pressure on prices. The Barzan Gas Project in Qatar is over 95% complete, with Train 1 expected to begin production in early 2015. When fully operational, the project will produce 1.4 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day. The project maintains excellent safety performance and aims to minimize environmental impacts.

- Royal Dutch Shell's new CEO Ben van Beurden issued a profit warning for Q4 2013, citing worse than expected results. This is a common tactic for new CEOs to shift blame and lower expectations.
- However, Shell executives said the warning was necessitated by significantly lower than typical profits of $2.9 billion compared to a range of $5-7 billion in recent quarters. Challenging market conditions impacted oil and gas production.
- The scale of the downturn has shocked Shell management more than investors. Van Beurden will need to announce bold changes to strategy on March 13th to satisfy shareholders and investors expecting more than "sweeping away cobwebs". Radical steps away from ref
Tasweeq, Qatar's international petroleum marketing company, signed its first condensate term contract with Adnoc from Abu Dhabi to supply Qatar condensate as refinery feedstock. Both CEOs expressed satisfaction with the agreement and hope to strengthen economic cooperation between the companies.

Independent Study - College of Wooster Research (2023-2024) FDI, Culture, Glo...AntoniaOwensDetwiler
"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.
