Image restoration (IR) is one of the fundamental problems, which includes denoising, deblurring, super-resolution, etc. Among those, in today's talk, I will more focus on the super-resolution task. There are two main streams in the super-resolution studies; a traditional model-based optimization and a discriminative learning method. I will present the pros and cons of both methods and their recent developments in the research field. Finally, I will provide a mathematical view that explains both methods in a single holistic framework, while achieving the best of both worlds. The last slide summarizes the remaining problems that are yet to be solved in the field.

Deep learning technologies are at the core of the current revolution in artificial intelligence for multimedia data analysis. The convergence of large-scale annotated datasets and affordable GPU hardware has allowed the training of neural networks for data analysis tasks which were previously addressed with hand-crafted features. Architectures such as convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks or Q-nets for reinforcement learning have shaped a brand new scenario in signal processing. This course will cover the basic principles of deep learning from both an algorithmic and computational perspectives.

Neural Fields are an emerging technique to parameterize signals that live in spatial coordinates plus time. They parameterize a signal as a continuous function that maps a space-time coordinate to whatever is at that spacetime coordinate - for instance, the geometry of a 3D scene could be encoded in a function that maps a 3D coordinate to whether that coordinate is occupied or not. A neural field parameterizes that function as a neural network.
In this session, I gave a high-level overview over how we may use neural fields as the output of a variety of inference algorithms, for instance to reconstruct a complete 3D shape from partial observations in the form of a pointcloud, or to reconstruct a 3D scene from only a single image.

In this deck from the 2018 Swiss HPC Conference, Gilles Fourestey from EPFL presents: Scratch to Supercomputers: Bottoms-up Build of Large-scale Computational Lensing Software.
"LENSTOOL is a gravitational lensing software that models mass distribution of galaxies and clusters. It was developed by Prof. Kneib, head of the LASTRO lab at EPFL, et al., starting from 1996. It is used to obtain sub-percent precision measurements of the total mass in galaxy clusters and constrain the dark matter self-interaction cross-section, a crucial ingredient to understanding its nature.
However, LENSTOOL lacks efficient vectorization and only uses OpenMP, which limits its execution to one node and can lead to execution times that exceed several months. Therefore, the LASTRO and the EPFL HPC group decided to rewrite the code from scratch and in order to minimize risk and maximize performance, a bottom-up approach that focuses on exposing parallelism at hardware and instruction levels was used. The result is a high performance code, fully vectorized on Xeon, Xeon Phis and GPUs that currently scales up to hundreds of nodes on CSCS’ Piz Daint, one of the fastest supercomputers in the world."

This paper proposes the Parallel WiSARD Object Tracker (PWOT), a new object tracker based on the
WiSARD weightless neural network that is robust against quantization errors. Object tracking in video is
an important and challenging task in many applications. Difficulties can arise due to weather conditions,
target trajectory and appearance, occlusions, lighting conditions and noise. Tracking is a high-level
application and requires the object location frame by frame in real time. This paper proposes a fast hybrid
image segmentation (threshold and edge detection) in YcbCr color model and a parallel RAM based
discriminator that improves efficiency when quantization errors occur. The original WiSARD training
algorithm was changed to allow the tracking.

Abstract: State of the art video compression techniques use the motion model to approximate geometric boundaries of moving objects where motion discontinuities occur. Motion hints based inter-frame prediction paradigm moves away from this redundant approach and employs an innovative framework consisting of motion hint fields that are continuous and invertible, at least, over their respective domains. However, estimation of motion hint is computationally demanding, in particular for high resolution video sequences. Discovery of homogeneous motion models and their associated masks over the current frame and then use these models and masks to form a prediction of the current frame, provides a computationally simpler approach to video coding compared to motion hint. In this paper, the potential of this coherent motion model based approach, equipped with bigger blocks, is investigated for coding 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) video sequences. Experimental results show a savings in bit rate of 4.68% is achievable over standalone HEVC.
An Assessment of Image Matching Algorithms in Depth EstimationCSCJournals
Computer vision is often used with mobile robot for feature tracking, landmark sensing, and obstacle detection. Almost all high-end robotics systems are now equipped with pairs of cameras arranged to provide depth perception. In stereo vision application, the disparity between the stereo images allows depth estimation within a scene. Detecting conjugate pair in stereo images is a challenging problem known as the correspondence problem. The goal of this research is to assess the performance of SIFT, MSER, and SURF, the well known matching algorithms, in solving the correspondence problem and then in estimating the depth within the scene. The results of each algorithm are evaluated and presented. The conclusion and recommendations for future works, lead towards the improvement of these powerful algorithms to achieve a higher level of efficiency within the scope of their performance.

Techniques to optimize the pagerank algorithm usually fall in two categories. One is to try reducing the work per iteration, and the other is to try reducing the number of iterations. These goals are often at odds with one another. Skipping computation on vertices which have already converged has the potential to save iteration time. Skipping in-identical vertices, with the same in-links, helps reduce duplicate computations and thus could help reduce iteration time. Road networks often have chains which can be short-circuited before pagerank computation to improve performance. Final ranks of chain nodes can be easily calculated. This could reduce both the iteration time, and the number of iterations. If a graph has no dangling nodes, pagerank of each strongly connected component can be computed in topological order. This could help reduce the iteration time, no. of iterations, and also enable multi-iteration concurrency in pagerank computation. The combination of all of the above methods is the STICD algorithm. [sticd] For dynamic graphs, unchanged components whose ranks are unaffected can be skipped altogether.
