Using internet technologies and network analysis in political campaigns effectively, specifically within the context of Rahm Emanuel's 2011 mayoral race.
Program of Geektrip I’ve been personally working on for 9 students from Epitech looking for an internship of 6 months starting from April 2015. May you find the inspiration ready this document in case you would be searching for an internship in Silicon Valley. Caution: all the companies mentioned in this document do not consider doing a visa procedure for foreign students. Ask first!
Anti-patterns for collaborative work and getting design done.
This is a version of a talk that we gave at the Service Design Global Conference 2016 (Amsterdam). The conference theme was "business as unusual", so we took a bit of a subversive approach. We described some simple techniques for sabotaging products, services, and whole organisations... and then turned it all on its head with a description of the anti-problem activity.

How to sabotage an organisation
Designing for distinction
Abstract:
Designing services and experiences requires cooperation and understanding between a range of people; it requires an adaptive, nimble organisation. Our talk will tell you how to sabotage and undermine all that. Inspired by a CIA manual on sabotage, we select and present some of the most effective tips as anti-patterns for modern, collaborative service design. We expand on these points, setting them in the context of our day-to-day work, as designers and innovators, highlighting the damage that can be done. We’ll also outline a practical game that you can use to solve problems creatively using anti-patterns.
Innovation:
Our innovation is that, by using selected anti-patterns, we invite the audience to play “devil’s advocate” for a change, and to consider how to design terrible services! Wikipedia defines an anti-pattern as “a common response to a recurring problem that is usually ineffective and risks being highly counterproductive”. Considering anti-patterns for solving problems can be a powerful way to help designers (and others!) to approach a problem with a new perspective, unencumbered by the need to “get it right”. Many of the “tips” we present are simple, logical, and avoidable… and yet we see them so often, preventing us from realising great service and experience design, and from collaborating effectively. In this talk, we approach that challenge a little differently.
A presentation about the fact that IT is not just a tool and that technology isn't neutral and how this relates to digital civil rights. This was a guest lecture at the university of Leiden on October 20th, 2011.

Open Source and The Global Disruption Of Telecom: What Choices Will We Make?Dan York
I gave the opening keynote at AstriCon 2015 in Orlando on Oct 14, 2015. You can read more at:
http://www.disruptivetelephony.com/2015/09/keynote-at-astricon-on-oct-14-open-source-and-the-global-disruption-of-telecom-what-choices-will-we-make.html
and
http://www.asterisk.org/community/astricon-user-conference/sessions/keynote-address-open-source-and-global-disruption
The abstract is:
There is a battle raging for the global future of telecommunications and the Internet. Taking place in networks, board rooms and legislatures, the battle will determine how we all communicate and what opportunities will exist. Will telecom support innovation? Will it be accessible to all? Will it give us the level of security and privacy we need to have the open, trusted Internet? Or will it be restricted and limited by corporate or government gatekeepers?
The rise of voice-over-IP has fundamentally disrupted the massive global telecommunications industry, infrastructure and policies. Open source software such as Asterisk has been a huge driver of that disruption and innovation.. but now what? What role do platforms such as Asterisk play in this space? And what can be their role in a telecom infrastructure that is now mobile, increasingly embedded (Internet of Things) and more and more using proprietary walled gardens of communication?
Join the Internet Society's Dan York in an exploration of what the future holds for telecom infrastructure and policy - and how the choices we make will determine that future.
Learning from Apache to create Open SpecificationsDavid Recordon
I should really sync audio to these slides since most of the information is not on the slides.
Open source development has reached a stable and remarkable maturity. With services like SourceForge and Google Code for hosting projects, the Open Source Initiative to vet and curate Open Source licenses, and organizations like the FSF and Apache where like-minded developers can work together to build sustainable and open communities around Open Source projects, and the support of hundreds of thousands of developers and major corporations alike, the success of open source is firmly established.
Yet when we turn our attention away from open source and instead to specifications and standards for the open web, much of this infrastructure doesn't yet exist. Formal standards bodies may enforce interoperability, but they don't always guarantee that a standard is freely implementable by everyone or that the development community is open to all potential contributors. As software development is increasingly centered on protocols and formats instead of simply source code, many newer initiatives, like Microformats, OpenID, OAuth and OpenSocial, have had to each invest time and money reinventing the legal and organizational infrastructure required to ensure that the specifications they create are open and their communities are healthy and run in meritocratic fashions.
Isn't there a better way? What can we learn from the open source movement that will help us create open specifications for the web?
The newly created Open Web Foundation is tackling this exact question by borrowing heavily from the proven model established by the Apache Foundation. This talk discusses the Open Web Foundation's progress so far, our goals for the future, and how you can get involved.

Digital Surveillance in China: From the Great Firewall to the Social Credit S...Aarhus University
Organized by AU Data Lab: http://datalab.au.dk/currently/events/show/artikel/come-join-us-for-the-first-lunch-talk-in-2017/
Abstract: As part of the Great Firewall of China, the Golden Shield Project, a massive surveillance and censoring system was initiated in the 1990s in China. The recent initiative of China’s social-credit system will assign a ‘social credit’ rating to every citizen based on their professions, social behaviors, online shopping habits and many others. This credit scoring system will collect data points through running algorithms and analyzing big data, which is connected to the entire rewards and punishment system. This presentation will discuss the Golden Shield Project and its relation to the latest social credit system. Few artistic and journalistic digital projects will be presented to examine how creativity could emerge from and through this highly controlled digital environment and how citizens may work against the internet censorship.
You online: Identity, Privacy, and the SelfAbhay Agarwal
In the current landscape of media and communication, our world is undergoing immense and rapid transformations in the breadth, and format of how we interconnect. At the same time, it is difficult for even the most technically adept to fully comprehend the scope of these projects. This talk is a musing on the ideas behind online identity and mass communication in the 21st century. It intends to partially unravel the mystery behind networked social identity, as well as provide the tools for even the technically-disinclined to understand the possibilities for control, surveillance, freedom, and liberated identity within this new topology.
Some included topics:
* Online surveillance, and how deleting your Facebook isn’t enough
* Big Data analytics: why your data is worth money, and the (im)possibility of privacy
* Theories and Paradoxes in a hyper-connected future
* Alternative internets, (or darkness) and what they represent.
Humanistic and Computational Thinking Through PracticeAarhus University
Creative Media Colloquium @ SCM, City University of Hong Kong, 12 Jan 2018
Abstract: In this talk, I will present some of my artistic works that span the areas of net art, software-based art, and electronic literature. My works examine the materiality of computational processes that underwrite our experiences and realities in digital culture that touch on cultural-social-political topics, such as Internet censorship, the economy of likes, spam and literary culture, politics of APIs, cultural machines and feminist software.
I consider computational practice as a mode of humanistic inquiry to understand the digital culture - a condition that we are highly engaged with, and surrounded by, software and networked systems. I ask how might we understand cultural systems through computational practice? This talk will unfold the importance of computational practice in my thinking and research, examining the infrastructure and implications of cultural systems.
