1. BIOGRAPHY OF NELSON MANDELA
Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in Mvezo, South Africa. His birth
name was Rolihlahla (Rolishlashla). "Rolihlahla" in his language literally means
"pulling the branch of a tree," but more commonly translates as "troublemaker."
His father’s name was Henry, and his mother was called Nosekeni Fanny. He got
the nickname Nelson from a teacher in school, his father died when he was just
nine years old.
Nelson studied hard at school and later He moved to the city of Johannesburg to
study law, he graduated as a lawyer in 1942, at age 24.
Like many others, Nelson Mandela felt that everyone deserved to be treated the
same, regardless of their skin colour. So, in 1944, he joined to the African
National Congress (ANC) – a political group that fought for equal rights for whites
and blacks.
Nelson Mandela was a civil rights leader in South Africa. He fought against
apartheid, a system where non-white citizens were segregated from whites and
did not have equal rights.

However, in 1962 the government's response was brutal and Mandela was
arrested and his resilience only grew stronger as he faced a prison.
In 1964 Mandela and other ANC leaders were sentenced to life in prison.
He spent 27 years in prison. He refused to bend on his principles in order to be
released and he said I would die for my ideals. He wanted all people of all races
to have equal rights in South Africa.
Mandela became famous during his years in prison. Many South Africans worked
to free him. International groups and people in other countries also supported
Mandela’s cause. In 1990 South African President finally freed Mandela.
Once released from prison, Nelson continued his campaign to end apartheid. His
hard work and life long effort paid off when all races were allowed to vote in the
1994 election. Nelson Mandela won the election and became president of South
Africa.
2. After his presidency, Mandela set up the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The group
promoted peace and the protection of human rights. Mandela also supported
other causes, such as fighting AIDS and ending world poverty. Mandela died on
December 5, 2013, in Johannesburg, South Africa at aged 95 years old..
