Budget hotel platform Oyo Rooms has forayed into Nepal with a target of onboarding 100
properties by the end of this year.

The room aggregator, which opened its first property here, is also looking to roll out its
'Townhouse' brand in the Himalayan nation, which of late is witnessing a tourist influx.
Commenting on the launch, Ritesh Agarwal, Founder and CEO of OYO, said:
“Building the category (of small and budget hotels) grounds-up, we have employed technology
and operational acumen to deliver delight to our customers and unparalleled benefits to
partners. Our network has witnessed robust growth to become the largest in India.”
The entry into Nepal comes on the heels of its foray in Malaysia. The plan is to set up 100 Oyo
hotels in Nepal this year. While its basic model is meant for the value- and cost- conscious
traveler, Townhouse caters to those who do not mind paying slightly more for a better service.
Newer Models
In big cities such as a Delhi or Bangalore, people have started vacating their homes to make way
for budget hotels. Such properties have started becoming a big draw for business travelers, even
tourists on a budget.

Players like FabHotels, Treebo have led to a standardization of room linen, to staff behaviour to
bathroom toiletries at such properties. Also, the entry of the likes of Airbnb has opened doors of
vacant rooms inside houses of city dwellers to travellers. Some startups have gone ahead to order
furniture in bulk and taking the property on lease from the owners for a period of up to three
years.
More such experiments are likely to follow where on-demand work-stay-play models will be
witnessed in Indian neighbourhoods.
Changing Times in Hospitality Sector
The travel and hospitality sector in India is witnessing a phenomenon of impulse planning.
Further, as travel-planning cycle reduces further, the expectations from on-ground suppliers and
agents of delivering a non-negotiable and predetermined experience have become stronger.
Affordable and trusted stay options remain one of the top concerns for most travelers.
"Our core premise is right pricing and right location with cleanliness on mind," says Ritesh. "The
brand Oyo allows small local hotel operators to use technology and innovation to bring in more
footfall."
Conclusion
The tourism and hospitality sector’s direct contribution to India’s GDP in 2016, is estimated to
be $47 billion. Globally, about$5 billion was pumped in the Online Travel Agencies (OTA)
segment in 2016, with a large amount diverted to companies based in China and India. The
largest investment in the space in 2016 went to Airbnb of about $555 million followed by India's
GoIbibo which received $250 million from Naspers and Tencent in February.
Booming travel aggregators and online travel portals are assisting several customers in their
quest to travel. The entry of startups such as OyoRooms, Treebo, FabHotels, GoStays, etc. has
disrupted the segment, pricing even the upper segment hotels as budget stays, and increasing
occupancy rates. These aggregators continue to innovate within the category to add further
value to both the customer and partner experience.

Commenting on the launch, Ritesh Agarwal, Founder and CEO of OYO, said: “Building the category (of small and budget hotels) grounds-up, we have employed technology and operational acumen to deliver delight to our customers and unparalleled benefits to partners. Our network has witnessed robust growth to become the largest in India.” The entry into Nepal comes on the heels of its foray in Malaysia. The plan is to set up 100 Oyo hotels in Nepal this year. While its basic model is meant for the value- and cost- conscious traveler, Townhouse caters to those who do not mind paying slightly more for a better service. Newer Models In big cities such as a Delhi or Bangalore, people have started vacating their homes to make way for budget hotels. Such properties have started becoming a big draw for business travelers, even tourists on a budget.

Also, the entry of the likes of Airbnb has opened doors of vacant rooms inside houses of city dwellers to travellers. Some startups have gone ahead to order furniture in bulk and taking the property on lease from the owners for a period of up to three years. More such experiments are likely to follow where on-demand work-stay-play models will be witnessed in Indian neighbourhoods. Changing Times in Hospitality Sector The travel and hospitality sector in India is witnessing a phenomenon of impulse planning. Further, as travel-planning cycle reduces further, the expectations from on-ground suppliers and agents of delivering a non-negotiable and predetermined experience have become stronger. Affordable and trusted stay options remain one of the top concerns for most travelers. "Our core premise is right pricing and right location with cleanliness on mind," says Ritesh. "The brand Oyo allows small local hotel operators to use technology and innovation to bring in more footfall." Conclusion The tourism and hospitality sector’s direct contribution to India’s GDP in 2016, is estimated to be $47 billion. Globally, about$5 billion was pumped in the Online Travel Agencies (OTA) segment in 2016, with a large amount diverted to companies based in China and India. The largest investment in the space in 2016 went to Airbnb of about $555 million followed by India's GoIbibo which received $250 million from Naspers and Tencent in February. Booming travel aggregators and online travel portals are assisting several customers in their quest to travel. The entry of startups such as OyoRooms, Treebo, FabHotels, GoStays, etc. has disrupted the segment, pricing even the upper segment hotels as budget stays, and increasing occupancy rates. These aggregators continue to innovate within the category to add further value to both the customer and partner experience.
