3. Ritesh Agarwal is the founder and CEO of OYO. He
launched his first start‐up, Oravel Stays Pvt. Ltd. in 2012
Ritesh Agarwal is a college drop-out.
To pursue his passion of becoming an entrepreneur, he
enrolled into Indian School of Business & Finance, Delhi
but left college mid-way to start his own company.
He was hesitant about his decision but from the beginning
was very clear about what he wanted to do and took some
tough choices to accomplish his dreams.
4. Before OYO, there was Oravel
He has travelled all over the country and during such
travels, discovered the problem with budget hotels. At
the age of 17, he launched Oravel travels, modelled after
Airbnb, which later branched out to become OYO rooms.
Soon he discovered that the problem with budget hotels
was bigger than just availability, so, to counter other
issues, he launched OYO.
Oravel was designed as a platform for booking budget and
premium accommodation. Realising the great variability in
the budget sector, he pivoted Oravel to OYO in 2013
5. OYO Rooms, commonly known as OYO, is an Indian hotel
brand that owns and operates as well as aggregates
standardised hotel rooms. It currently operates in more
than 200 Indian cities and in Malaysia.
The man who has stayed at numerous budget hotels
himself – and juggled roles as housekeeper, call center
guy, and startup founder – wants you to think OYO (short
for “on your own”) every time you step out of home.
6. OYO is offering 65,000 rooms through they plan to grow
deeper in all other sectors too..
Three years ago, he started off with a single Gurgaon
hotel. It had 14 rooms, and OYO took over 11 of those.
OYO started with one city and one hotel in Gurgaon in
January 2013. The company as of October 2016 has
around 6500 hotels in 220+ cities of India and has been
named India's largest budget hotel chain
It is today India’s largest branded network of budget
hotels – the startup calls it largest “across all categories”
– with 5,500 properties in over 170 cities. It’s like Uber
for budget hotel rooms.
