This document provides instructions for an art activity where students draw the negative space around objects. Students are instructed to arrange a pencil case or hold a writing tool in their non-dominant hand to create shapes. They then draw the empty space around the objects, filling it with patterns or marks in the style of artist Jim Dine to focus on negative space.

1. Cover….Negative Space
1. Choose from the following:
• Arrange the content of you pencil case in front of you.
• Hold a pencil or pen in the hand you DO NOT write with.
• Hold your empty hand (the hand you DO NOT write with)
in a position that creates shapes and gaps between your
fingers.
2. Draw the NEGATIVE SPACE around your objects or hand
3. Fill the NEGATIVE SPACE but make it interesting. Copy
the style of Jim Dine and the marks he makes or create a
pattern.
