Learning Objectives:
1.To experiment with mark
making, using line and shape.
2.To develop mark making skills
by drawing an insect.
3.To learn how to include intricate
detail through mark making.

TASK 1:
1. Using a ruler and pencil, split a page in your sketchbook into 8
squares.
2. In each square, experiment making different marks. Use different
pressures (press hard and light), shapes, lines and patterns.
3. Look at your insect photo for inspiration. Re-create some of the
patterns you see.

OUTCOMES:
MUST: 1 page in your sketchbook filled with different, interesting
marks.
SHOULD: Use big & small shapes, hard & light pressures and thick
and thin lines.
COULD: Create very detailed marks.
TASK 2:
1. Choose an insect outline or draw an insect free hand in your sketchbook.
2. Use your mark making skills to fill in the insect. Create different patterns and marks with
your marks to give the insect a personality and texture.
You can only use pencil, so the focus is on the lines, texture and shapes you make, not colour.

Extension: Outline your insect with black fine liner.
OUTCOMES:
MUST: Have an insect that is interesting, detailed and uses a
lot of different marks & shapes.

SHOULD: Have at least 8 different marks on your insect.
COULD: Extend your insect outline shape by adding extra
legs and antennae.

Insects lesson 1

  • 1. Home-Study Design your own insect. A4 sheet
  • 2. Describe your Insect. Use adjectives (describing words). smooth detailed Bold hairy Interesting Big Ugly small deadly venomous Beautiful scary
  • 3. Learning Objectives: 1.To experiment with mark making, using line and shape. 2.To develop mark making skills by drawing an insect. 3.To learn how to include intricate detail through mark making.
  • 4. Keywords Shape Line Texture Birds Eye View Mark Making Pattern TASK 1: 1. Using a ruler and pencil, split a page in your sketchbook into 8 squares. 2. In each square, experiment making different marks. Use different pressures (press hard and light), shapes, lines and patterns. 3. Look at your insect photo for inspiration. Re-create some of the patterns you see. OUTCOMES: MUST: 1 page in your sketchbook filled with different, interesting marks. SHOULD: Use big & small shapes, hard & light pressures and thick and thin lines. COULD: Create very detailed marks.
  • 5. TASK 2: 1. Choose an insect outline or draw an insect free hand in your sketchbook. 2. Use your mark making skills to fill in the insect. Create different patterns and marks with your marks to give the insect a personality and texture. You can only use pencil, so the focus is on the lines, texture and shapes you make, not colour. Extension: Outline your insect with black fine liner.
  • 6. OUTCOMES: MUST: Have an insect that is interesting, detailed and uses a lot of different marks & shapes. SHOULD: Have at least 8 different marks on your insect. COULD: Extend your insect outline shape by adding extra legs and antennae.
  • 7. Date Developing, Refining, Recording, Presenting ideas: Task set, Materials and Techniques used. Evaluate: What is your Grade opinion about the piece of work you have completed? 15.04.13 1.Create a Mark Making experimentation page. 2.Use mark making skills to create an exciting insect with different patterns, lines, textures and shapes on. I think my mark making page is…… My insect is…… In my opinion, I think Word bank: Creative, bold, expressive, complex, detailed, experimental, intricate, exciting.
