Time
BALTIMORE -- Many schools in Baltimore City no longer offer music
programs to students. But a new program at Coppin State University is
offering music classes and a great deal more.
Coppin State University band director Hugh Barnes created a Saturday
program that teaches inner city kids how to play an instrument. The
program began in October and so far has 25 students, said 11 News reporter
Kim Dacey.
Along with learning to play an instrument, there is the associated benefit of
getting these young people off the streets and onto a positive path, said
Dacey. Eighth-grader Aliyah Thompson is already in love with playing her
trumpet. "I like the sound, the real, like, soulful sound. I guess it's like in my
blood. I love music. It's just like my way of life."
Thompson took music classes at her school when she lived in New York. But
when she moved to Baltimore, she discovered her new school did not have a
music program. "Since my school didn't have a band, I was kind of sad
because I love band. So when my mother told me about Mr. Barnes'
program I was like, 'Yay!'"
Thompson is a good example of Barnes' music theory. "A lot of people have
written off inner-city youth as having behavior problems, social problems,
academic problems and mental problems. "What I'm trying to show people
is that you have to reach the child through their interest."
It's expected that the number of participants will grow throughout the year.
The students work one-on-one and in groups getting instruction from
Barnes and his Coppin State music students. Barnes hopes that by getting
the students involved in something they're passionate about, it will keep
them in school and on the path toward college and even a music
