This document analyzes the mise-en-scène, setting, and conflict in the film "An Adventure in Space and Time". Costumes, props, and lighting are used to emphasize the 1960s era. The setting of the television studio is established through shots of old cameras and monitors. The conflict arises from the sexism Verity Lambert faces as the BBC's first female producer, as the two male characters brush her off until realizing she is the producer. Shots are used to show the opposing views between the men and Verity.
3. MISE EN SCÈNE
➤ Costumes are used to emphasise the era that the
film is set in. The character Verity Lambert wears a
navy blue 60's dress and the men wear tweed suits.
Heather wears a green woollen cardigan and brown
dress in typical 1960s fashion.
➤ While in Verity's office, the lighting is bright with
natural lighting coming in through the windows
and a desk lamp next to photos of potential actors
helping to show that the scene is set during
midday. In contrast, the television studio has dull
lighting to show that the studio is not currently in
use with the lighting coming from television
screens as well as the orange light of one of the
studio lamps.
➤ In the Hartnell's house, there are many props and
pieces of set dressing to show the 1960's era. These
include an old wooden clock on the mantel piece, a
60's telephone and an old lamp. In the television
studio we can see numerous monitors showing
what the cameras are seeing. We can also see retro
model television cameras and lighting equipment.
4. SETTING
➤ The director uses a wide shot to show Verity
walking down the the television studio
hallway and the location of where she is
inside the studio (going to her new office).
Costumes and props help to show that the
film is set in 1963. Props also help to show
the setting of the television studio by the use
of old camera equipment etc. The characters
British accent also shows that it is set in
London.
➤ The two men discussing actors to play 'Dr.
Who' and brushing Verity off shows the 'male
supremacy' society and the politics relating
to the sexism of the time and the struggles
Verity had to go through as the BBC's first
female producer. This is shown when Verity
walks into her office and the men instantly
assume that the producer is a male.
5. CONFLICT
➤ The external conflict between the two
men and Verity is show through two shots
and over-the-shoulder shots to show the
audience the opposing sides of the men
and women. The director uses these shots
to show the conflict of the sexism between
the men and Verity as their first female
producer. This also shows opposing
ideologies and world views as the men
believe in a mans world.
➤ When Verity first walks in, an over the
shoulder shot of the men shows her
smiling as she is excited to become a
producer but when the men begin
disregarding her, her smile drops to
looking more serious and direct about
wanting to have a say in the casting of Dr.
Who. The actress uses facial expressions
to show her characters internal conflict
about how she feels about her job.
