Initial Response
1. ARTIST IDEAS
Tyler, the Creator:
Tyler in his earlier songs
has a very violent music
style, and this is the style
I prefer, as it shows more
anger, and has more
emotion. I think one of his
songs from “BASTARD” or
“GOBLIN” would make a
good and disturbing
music video, possibly the
songs “Sarah” or “Her”.
Beck:
Beck has a distinctive style
in the indie-rock scene. His
music is experimental and
strange, but still coherent.
Along with his own albums
winning him a Grammy, he
also did some music for
one of my favourite films
“Scott pilgrim vs. the
World”. I think the song
“Ramona” would make for
a good story driven music
video.
Earl Sweatshirt:
Earl is my second favourite
MC of all time. His lyrics
are deep, meaningful,
relatable and depressing. In
particular, a portion of his
10 minute song “Solace”
would make for a great
emotionally charged video.

MF DOOM/DOOM/Viktor Vaughn/King
Geedorah/Zev Love X
By far my favourite MC is DOOM. He goes by
many names, all with differing personalities. The
masked rapper has been going since 1991, and
has made a name for himself with his super-
villain persona. His music always differs from
album to album, but I think any of the songs
from “Take Me To Your Leader” or “Madvillainy”
would make great music videos. Interestingly, he
doesn’t have many official music videos, or an
official YouTube page for himself.
2. TYLER, THE CREATOR VIDEOS
Perfect
VCR
IFHY
Over his four albums, Tyler’s songs and music videos have gotten progressively more light hearted. “VCR” from “BASTARD” is about Tyler kidnapping
a girl and keeping her in his basement. In “Yonkers” from “Goblin”, Tyler eats a cockroach and hangs himself. “IFHY” (I F*cking Hate You) from “Wolf”
is about Tyler’s crumbling relationship with a girlfriend. And finally, “Perfect” from “CHERRY BOMB” is about how happy this girl makes him. His
colour pallet has also changed over the years, gradually getting more colourful. His videos also gradually got less claustrophobic, with the camera
moving away from him more.

3. SCREENSHOTS FROM EARL SWEATSHIRT’S “HIVE” AND “GRIHIV
E
GRI

Earl’s music and videos have gone the opposite way to Tyler’s, getting progressively darker and more depressing. But some of the shots in these
videos are fantastic, so I chose my two favourites, as opposed to one from each album. There are lots of close-ups and ECUs of Earl in both videos,
and of the monsters in “Hive”. There is also a lot more editing, and more visual effects. In “Hive” the colour correction makes the video darker, and
the monsters eyes have been added in. In one shot, Earl’s eyes have been completely removed (above). In “Grief” the whole video is given a dark
black and white filter, and is most likely shot on a green screen to get the black background. The people in the video have also been edited in a
weird kind of way that makes them look all CGI. There is very minimal lighting in both videos.

4. MUSIC VIDEO IDEAS
I’d like to make a dark music video, for a depressing or violent song, probably by Tyler, the creator or Earl Sweatshirt. If I chose
these two artists, I think I’d choose the songs “Sarah” by Tyler, or a portion of “Solace” by Earl, since it’s a 10 minute song.
Alternately, I’d like to make a narrative driven music video for a song like “Ramona” by Beck, “Between Villains” by Viktor Vaughn,
Earl Sweatshirt and Captain Murphy or “I Wonder” by King Geedorah.
In my music video, I’d like the visuals to be dark for the narrative like in “Grief,” but spliced in between the darker shots, I’d like
shots with bright colours as a contrast. Alternately, I could end the video in colour to surprise the audience. I want the video
to have some sort of a narrative that can be sorted out in the storyboard.
5. IDEAS FOR A PROMOTIONAL PACKAGE
Colour scheme
Since the song will be more of a depressing
song from Earl, Tyler or DOOM, I want there to
be minimal colour, possibly sticking to one
colour on black and white, or one solid colour,
like these ones:
Rap Conventions
Rap music have very few conventions when it comes to album
covers and videos. It really all depends on the artist and the
emotion of content they’ve created. In videos, the visuals
usually match what the rapper is talking about, and just has
shots of them rapping, or the video follows more of a story.
For my video for “I Wonder” by King Geedorah featuring
Hassan Chop, I’d like it to follow a dark story, but have scenes
of vibrant colour.
6. For the front cover, I’d like to
have images of all of MF
DOOM’s personas, and a large
title that reads “BEST OF THE
VILLAIN”. I want the colour
scheme to look like a panel out
of an old comic book, because
DOOM often portrays himself as
the character of Doctor Doom
from the Spiderman/fantastic 4
comics.
The back cover will have
the track listing and
some art of DOOM.
Various photos and
pictures and cartoons of
DOOM, or maybe
excerpts of Fantastic 4
comics.

For the disc, I’d just
want an image of
DOOM’S mask covering
the whole disc.
7. Advert
I’d like my advert to be in a similar style to this advert/poster for a
show with DOOM, Bishop Nehru and BADBADNOTGOOD. I’d like
the main focus to be on DOOM, but also surround him with
photos of the artists that he’s featured like Hassan Chop and MF
Grimm.
