Leadership in organization

Abstract
Purpose
• The purpose of this article is to establish a critical
synthesis of the narcissistic leadership in organization
• Moreover its aim is to provide suggestion for
research related to leadership styles.
Design approach
• This paper comprises a review of a latest scientific
research in the field of narcissistic leadership.
Introduction
What is narcissistic leadership style?
• Narcissistic leadership is a leadership style in which
the leader is only interested in him/herself. Their
priority is themselves at the expense of their
people/group members.
Nature of narcissistic Leadership
• They are selfish use power for himself.
• Rather than serving company they use all resources
to get admiration and to get feelings of superiority.
• Pathological Narcissism point of view(Overt
narcissism also called grandiose narcissism).
• According to this point of view narcissism is
psychological or mental disorder an individual must
display at least five of the nine symptoms listed
below.
The Nine Characteristics of NPD
 Arrogance and pride attitude behavior
People with NPD are likely to have arrogant qualities,
and will assert one's own ideas over others in an air
of superiority and pride.

Grandiosity
Grandiosity means to feel superior. Narcissists usually
consider other inferior and think. that their traits and talent
are superior than others
Preoccupation with Success and Power
Due to their high expectations of themselves, they never
expect to fail. Ambitions of success and achieving power
dominates the mind of narcissist.

 Lack of Empathy
The ability to understand and share the
feelings of another emotions in simple to
understand others.

 Belief of Being Unique
This characteristic comes with the belief that not a lot of
people have things that they have think they are unique.
Requires Excessive Admiration
Some sufferers of NPD may feel that they need to be admired
or looked up to by others. They also may feel that they
deserve this admiration which links closely into the belief that
they deserve certain special privileges.

 Sense of Entitlement
A person suffering from Narcissistic Personality disorder to
likely to have a demeanor of sense entitlement, meaning that
they believe they deserve certain privileges or special
treatment.

Narcissists have a defining characteristic of
being exploitative, meaning utilizing others for
their own gain or advantage.
Envious of Others
They use other's success to become jealous
and use that as a stepping stone to their own
success.

 Charisma
The word charisma is derived from Greek word
Means grace favor or divine and expressive
Non verbal communication(physical appearance,
Eye contact, voice modulation, facial expression, arm movement).
 According to researchers Narcissistic leaders possess a strong charisma that allows them
to seduce the people in their entourage.
 They create a neat and attractive physical appearance and wear fashionable stylish and
expensive cloths.
Components
Self interested influence
 A number of theoretical works establish that
narcissistic are mainly motivated by the satisfaction of
their own needs.
 After several studies following three things that cause
self interested influence in narcissistic leaders.
 A sense of entitlement means Considering they
deserve this special treatment.
 Strictly positive self image about himself.
 Considering their traits and characteristic are superior
than others.
Components
• Deceptive motivation
• The narcissistic leader obtains the mobilization of
employees by resorting to deceptive motivation.
• Narcissistic personality should have several variables
• Impulsivity
• They never forgive someone.
• A desire for revenge.
• In ability to learn from mistakes.
• Risk taking base on performance expectation rather
than actual performance.

• Intellectual inhibition
• Because narcissistic leaders need admiration
so they give intellectual inhibition to their
subordinates.
• In addition because they are highly sensitive
to the judgment of others so they react
aggressively if they receive any negative
feedback.
Consequences
• Following are few consequences of narcissistic
leadership on workplace and organization.
• Production of violate and risky decision making.
• Creation of toxic organizational climate.
• Inflicting damage on others bullying , coercion and damage to the
psychological well being of subordinates.
• Destruction of subordinates trust and destroy organizational
effectiveness.
• A toxic work atmosphere( Lack of empathy and coldness towards
colleagues and staff).
• Dysfunctional management(difficulty learning from feedback).
• Increase white collar crime.

• Narcissistic leadership is due to the weakness
of some subordinate they so extra admiration
of leaders due to which their courage
increase.

• Narcissistic leadership in organization is
conclusion of association between national
culture of country and the level of narcissism
found among its citizens.
• Moreover according to another study those
culture who promote individual success
individualism would have more level of
narcissism in organizations.
Environmental factor
• We are facing a period of severe political
economic or technological instability or many
other type of alarming threats by the
members of another organization.
• So in these type of Circumantance it give
space to narcissistic leadership in
organizations.
Structural factor
• Structure of organization play vital role in the
existence and emergence of narcissistic
leadership in organization.
• A system of reward based on team rather than
individual performance this type of structure
promote narcissistic leadership in
organization.
Positive side
• Here are some of the common traits of the
narcissistic leader.
1. Lead with vision
In the positive spectrum of narcissistic
leadership, the leaders understand the
importance of having a vision that people
believe in. These leaders are able to see the
big picture, or rather, they see things

Narcissistic leaders have a great yearning to be
admired so they even do work hard to get
admire.
3. Unable to take criticism
Narcissists are usually extremely sensitive, and
this makes narcissistic leaders particularly
sensitive to harsh criticism. They are unable take
criticism .They cannot tolerate in case of self
respect.

competitive. They are relentless in their
pursuit of victory.

Abstract Purpose • The purpose of this article is to establish a critical synthesis of the narcissistic leadership in organization • Moreover its aim is to provide suggestion for research related to leadership styles. Design approach • This paper comprises a review of a latest scientific research in the field of narcissistic leadership.
  • 4. Introduction What is narcissistic leadership style? • Narcissistic leadership is a leadership style in which the leader is only interested in him/herself. Their priority is themselves at the expense of their people/group members.
  • 5. Nature of narcissistic Leadership • They are selfish use power for himself. • Rather than serving company they use all resources to get admiration and to get feelings of superiority. • Pathological Narcissism point of view(Overt narcissism also called grandiose narcissism). • According to this point of view narcissism is psychological or mental disorder an individual must display at least five of the nine symptoms listed below.
  • 6. The Nine Characteristics of NPD  Arrogance and pride attitude behavior People with NPD are likely to have arrogant qualities, and will assert one's own ideas over others in an air of superiority and pride.

Narcissists usually consider other inferior and think. that their traits and talent are superior than others Preoccupation with Success and Power Due to their high expectations of themselves, they never expect to fail.
