NICRA (Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association) was formed in 1967 by educated middle-class Catholics to protest discrimination in Northern Ireland through non-violent methods. Civil rights marches held in 1969 led to fights breaking out and British troops being sent in to restore order, though the troops were initially seen as neutral by Catholics, those good relations did not last long as tensions rose further.
