The New York colony consisted of villages with churches, houses, rivers, and gardens located in the northern region of what is now a very rich state. The native Americans who originally lived in the area resided in wigwams, moved inland during the winter, first met Roger Williams in 1636, and later fought and were enslaved by the English settlers.
