Introduction Documentary film, a term coined by John Grierson, "the father of the documentary film
movement in the English speaking world," (Barsam, 1973, p. 77), concerns a genre that is unlike
other forms of cinema. There are no actors and the "plot" reveals itself in authentic actions rather
than dialogue. The people concerned are the characters, their lives the setting. In the years leading
up to Robert Flaherty's Nanook of the North, the first such feature–length film, the medium was
immensely popular, with audiences clamoring to see the far reaches of the globe from their local
theater or exhibition house. While narrative film in the modern day is considered the default mode
of moviemaking, documentaries still capture the imagination and take the viewer into real lives they
have not experienced, rather than lives imagined on a page. Without these historic documentaries,

Photography. To truly appreciate the art of photography, it must be known that it is not some simple
task where all one does is press down on the button. This is not all that it is. Photography skills vary
from person to person, and can evolve over time. When looking back on the past, one can see how
personal photography is to a photographer. Even from historical photographers such as Ansel
Adams, Dorothea Lange, George Hurrell, Eadweard Muybridge, and many others, it is noticeable
that photography styles truly do vary from person to person. Each has their own technique for

Making a film takes a very complex process. This is why films sometimes take months and even
years to make. Filmmaking is always broken up into 5 steps. Filmmaking takes a process of the
development of the film, the pre–production, production, the post–production, and distribution. This
is when the production begins to take shape. Ideas for the film are created and the screenplay is
written and edited. During this part of the process financing is planned out and looked at what can
be afforded, what needs to be purchased, or what will be the amount of money of the whole film in
total. During this part of the process the head people in charge make preparations for the film. For
example they hold auditions to know what the cast and film crew to hire, they begin to build sets for
the film, and they begin searching for and choosing the locations for the motion picture. This part of
the process is when the film begins to take its shape. The script is put to action and it is then
recorded during the film shoot. During this process, it is when the director has their ideas brought to
life. While filming, things may be changed such as the dialogue, sets, tiny parts of the plot, and
costumes. Some filmmakers say this is when they come up with more creative ideas. Many creative

Rebecca Solnit was at a sophisticated party one evening when the party's important male host asked
her what she did for a living. When Solnit answered that she is a writer whose most recent book was
on Eadweard Muybridge, the host started going on and one about another important book that was
written about the same man. To the host's embarrassment, that book was in fact Solnit's. Solnit

American motion picture industry begins with the eccentric 'photographic artist', Eadweard
Muybridge. In 1872, Eadweard Muybridge was sought out by former governor of California and
railroad tycoon, Leland Stanford, because of his expertise with the camera. Stanford thought that if
Muybridge could capture equine motion in a series of photographs, it would be possible to discern
whether or not all four of a horse's legs were simultaneously aloft at any point when running.
However, initial series of photographs taken by Muybridge was unsuccessful in resolving Stanford's
query. However, in 1877, Stanford decided to re–enlist Muybridge for a more scientific approach to
the problem of equine motion. The second time around, Muybridge used twelve electrically operated
cameras capable of taking photographs in succession. The product of Stanford and Muybridge's
experiment, twelve instantaneous photographs of a horse in motion, contributed to our
understanding of animal locomotion and showed images could be blurred together by the brain to
produce motion. This discovery set the stage for the invention of the motion picture camera and

Expressive type is essentially a method of design where text is used to create some kind of image.
As shown in the references, there is a finished piece of work for this task, the poster uses type to
create the character Tyrion from the TV show Game of Thrones. The type in the poster is actually a
quote from the character and is formed in a way to shape the characters stance from an iconic
moment for him. The development of this poster involved using a previously created illustration of
the character and mixing it with typography. The original image was placed into the Adobe
Illustrator software as it provided a lot of tools for type. The text was then written out and reshaped
to form the body of the character. The typeface was selected carefully as it was meant to match the
minimalistic style of the previous illustration, therefore the typeface was sans serif. After this part of
the development was complete, the image was moved into Photoshop where the colour from the
image would be given to the text. A few basic finishing touches were given by adding blocks of
colour near certain letters to help bring the shape of the character out.

Food photography is a huge part of our society today. Food Photography is an important element to
creating an impact. Consumers react first through sight, and then are prompted to behave in a
particular way in response to how they feel about what they see. A well laid–out design with
beautiful color selection and appropriate typographic treatments will certainly grab the attention of a
consumer. But a perfectly executed, well–shot photograph is more likely to make them react.
There are many factors that influence food photography. Food photography started in the 1600s as a
painting, and the paintings looked as if they were taken from far away. The food they used for the art
was artificially doctored up. For example ice cream was substituted with mash potatoes and paper
mache mock–ups were sometimes used instead of real poultry. These substitutions were a result of
hot studio lamps, but as cameras and film speed and sensitivity improved, more genuine food
products were introduced. But when people found out, it gave the profession a horrible name.
Because of the technical aspects of the food photography of this period, it was not taken seriously as
an art. In the 1800s when the camera was introduced, it changed the way food photographs were
taken. The first still life was a view from the window, by Nicephore Niepce in 1827. Due to the
eight hour exposure time that it took to take the picture, the buildings were illuminated from both
sides by the sun.

America’s Domination of the Film Industry
Looking at the film industry as we now know it, it's hard to imagine that America wasn't always the
film producing machine we see it as now. Yet, when we begin looking at all the technological
advances that took place in film over time and the events which occurred during these periods, it
was a complex journey. In the following essay we are going to discuss why I believe that the wars
faced both foreign and domestic played the biggest factor in the American Film industry's rise to
dominance by the 1950s.
Birth of Film:
As with all things it's probably best to start with the beginning; the birth of film. Eadweard
Muybridge was hired in 1872 to capture images of a horse running to settle a debate as to whether
all four feet of a horse were off the ground at the same time while trotting. Little did he know that by
capturing these images he eventually would spark the invention of the kinetscope by Thomas Edison
in the 1880s.
By the late 1890s movies could be projected onto a screen and audiences finally were able to attend
public demonstrations. In 1905 the world's first nickelodeon devoted to film exhibition was opened
in Pittsburgh, PA by Harry Davis. Nickelodeons (named for both the price of admission and the
Greek word for "theater") soon spread across the country, the number of nickelodeons reached
around 8000 between 1907 and 1908, and by 1910 it was estimated that as many as 26 million
Americans visited these theaters every week.

Movies are a great way to take a break from your hectic life and just relax. They have been
entertaining everyone around the world since the mid 1800's. The first "movies" were plays, shows,
and musicals. People enjoyed watching these in their free time, but Eadweard Muybridge was the
first person to think about putting pictures in motion to make a story. The evolution of the movie
went from black and white pictures, to color, sound and finally to 3–D film. So, just think about

Directors, artists, and inventors took hundreds of years to create the very first movie, which captured

made the first movie in 1878, The Horse in Motion. He used multiple cameras and put the individual
pictures of a galloping horse into a movie. Muybridge also invented the Zoopraxiscope, the first
ever movie projector that made short films and movies. It was able to quickly project images,
creating what is known as motion photography, and the first movie to ever exist. To use the
Zoopraxiscope, a disc is put on the device and is turned. As the disc turns, the images are projected

Daguerre and Niépce became partners by 1829. Daguerre was soon on his own, though, for his

The invention of moving pictures began in 1875 in California when Leland Stanford, the governor
of California, got into a disagreement with a rival gambler about whether or not all four hooves of a
horse are ever off the ground at the same time. To get to the bottom of this argument, "Stanford
hired Eadweard Muybridge, a British born entrepreneur and renowned photographer" to set up a row
of cameras along a racetrack and capture the stages of the horses gallop with timed exposures.

Introduction
Directors demand their films to be felt. What's the point of creating a film if it doesn't invoke
thought or feelings? Hence the discussion of filmmaking and the important role the director has in
executing a film as a body of work and or art form. However, one has to ask, how did directors and

My Interest in Filmmaking and Directors
My outlook on filmmaking and the role of a director have changed. I used think there wasn't much
that went into making a film or being a director. However, the skill level to execute a film as well as
direct it is very complicated. So, throughout this paper I will be discussing the different aspects of
filmmaking which the director personally oversees. Also, the history of motion pictures, the early
filmmaking experience, the history behind the first female director, music & film, actors/actresses,
scene selection, pre–production, creative vision, production, scheduling and post –production.
The History of Motion Pictures
The first machine patented in the United States that showed animated pictures or movies was a
device called the "wheel of life" or "zoopraxiscope". Patented in 1867 by William Lincoln, moving
drawings or photographs were watched through a slit in the zoopraxiscope. The Frenchman Louis
Lumiere is often credited as inventing the first motion picture camera in 1895. But in truth, several
others had made similar inventions around the same time as Lumiere. What Lumiere invented was a
portable motion–picture camera, film processing unit and projector called the Cinematographe, three
functions covered in one invention.
