Introduction to Ruby, Rails, and Ruby on RailsSimon Bagreev
Given at Dominion Enterprises software developers users group in Dec, 2011. Purpose -- introduce Ruby and Rails to the group. Original presentation consisted of two parts: slides and live Rails application building. Slides are included here.

JBoss EAP is a heavy-duty Java application server. It's a perfect match for huge banking applications, but also perfect impedance mismatch with DevOps processes. This is the story how we persuaded the Behemoth to work with Chef automation. The goal was to manage multitude of our JBoss clusters and be able to rebuild the infrastructure on-demand.
A brief and basic introduction to the syntax of Ruby 1.8, along with a few nice language features. This is a talk I gave at one of our first Rochester on Rails meetings.
Talk given to BCN sudoers on 2013-11-05. Introduction to the ansible configuration management tool. Great to automate reproducible installations and setup.
An introduction to Rex - FLOSS UK DevOps York 2015Andy Beverley
An introduction to Rex automation and orchestration. Presentation given at FLOSS UK DevOps York 2015. Get a general overview of Rex and find out why I like to use it.

Successful Investing in a Low Growth Economy: A Historical PerspectiveBen Esget
The U.S. economy has grown about 3.5% annually from the 17th century until the late 20th century. Most of American industry and wealth can be attributed to significant technological advancements starting in the Industrial Revolution. Over recent decades, productivity has significantly dropped off with some estimates of the economy growing at 1.8% annually.
Returns from innovation appear to be entering a period of stagnation. Although the causes and implications of such events remain in question, it has become increasingly vital for investors to analyze performance across similar environments in history to successfully navigate uncertain markets.
People using your web app also use many other online services. You'll often want to pull data from those other services into your app, or publish data from your app out to other services. In this talk, Randy will explain the terminology you need to know, share best practices and techniques for integrating, and walk through two real-world examples. You'll leave with code snippets to help you get started integrating.
The asyncio project was officially launched with the release of Python 3.4 in March 2014. The project was public before that under the name “tulip”. asyncio is just a core network library, it requires third party library to be usable for common protocols. One year later, asyncio has a strong community writing libraries on top of it.
The most advanced library is aiohttp which includes a complete HTTP client but also a HTTP server. There are also libraries to access asynchronously the file system, resolve names with DNS, have variables local to tasks, read-write locks, etc. There are clients for AMQP, Asterisk, ElasticSearch, IRC, XMPP (Jabber), etc. (and even an IRC server!). There are asynchronous drivers for all common databases, and even for some ORMs. As expected, there are tons of new web frameworks based on asyncio. It’s also possible to plug asyncio into Gtk, Qt, gevent, eventlet, gunicorn, tornado, etc.
I will also discuss use cases of asyncio in production and benchmarks. Spoiler: asyncio is not slow.
The asyncio library also evolved to become more usable: it has a better documentation, is easier to debug and has a few new functions. There is also a port to Python 2: trollius.
There are more smart people building software now than there have been at any point in the past, which means that it's more important than ever to stay on top of new developments, libraries, frameworks, and everything else. To really take advantage of this wealth of innovation, however, you've got to look beyond your normal community -- what's going on in Python? And how can we use that to make our Ruby lives easier? In this session, we'll explore that question. We'll look at actual examples of code and concepts borrowed and reimplemented to form a better idea of when it's appropriate and when it'll fall flat.

Sprockets is an easy solution to managing large JavaScript codebases by letting you structure it, bundle it with related assets, and consolidate it as one single file, with pre-baked command-line tooling, CGI front and Rails plugin. It's a framework-agnostic open-source solution that makes for great serving performance while helping you structure and manage your codebase better.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Let's dive deeper into the world of ODC! Ricardo Alves (OutSystems) will join us to tell all about the new Data Fabric. After that, Sezen de Bruijn (OutSystems) will get into the details on how to best design a sturdy architecture within ODC.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
