2. GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music Video
Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy â some
sections require you to delete the information on the slide
and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress through the
pre-production phase.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or donât like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
5. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 â add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
Youâve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
6. The picture is very clear and zoomed in
and focused on the artists clothes and
jewelry which is very important as it is
capturing the viewers attention of the
flush lifestyle they have. The shot also
shows that they are masked up and that
there is no sight of their face is shown on
camera. This could suggest they are
trying to hide from police because of
illegal activities which they are part of and
donât want to get caught. As well as that,
they look they are having fun and enjoying
the video and lifestyle which they
represent, dancing with the champagne
bottle and enjoying each others company
shows their passion for this genre of
music (drill) which they represent. They
are shown as a collective and gang as
gangs are part of the urban and drill
culture. The target audience will be people
around the age of the rappers and late
teens so 17-30 who enjoy this music
genre of drill. They also have a secondary
market from branding certain designer
Key points
- Expensive designer clothing.
(shows wealth)
- They all have balaclavas on
which makes us interested
to know who they are as
they are removing their
identity, which intrigues the
audience to follow the
storyline and see if they
reveal themselves.
- The background and
location reflects their
7. In this video the camera angle
is tilted and zooms in to each
persons clothing and wrist to
show the designer clothing
and expensive jewelry which
shows they are very wealthy.
There is a lot of shot density
where the camera makes the
video cut down which gets
smaller every time the beat
changes so the video connects
with each beat drop. As well as
that, the background of the
light shining through to show
that they are having a good
time and it catches the viewers
eyes which is a corresponding
occurrence with the bright
colours and the expensive
branding which screams out to
Key Points
- The lighting is surrounding one of the
main featured artists and it is representing
him as a key figure in the video as a lot of
people know who he is and this will attract
more of the drill music fans which he
represents.
- Expensive designer clothing. (shows
wealth)
- Some of the people are contributing to the
music song but some of the celebrities
are just in the video to draw a larger
audience as other people who arenât fans
of the music and know the other
celebrities will still want to watch the video
8. The screenshot on the right shows that the
Artist is showing love to the audience and
fans watching as he is making a heart sign
with his hands. Also, the start of the video
has the blood splatter with the title which
is intertextual with the movie 300 as they
do the same blood platter effect with title
and the movie also has Spartans in which
is the name of this drill group (Harlem
Spartans).
As well as that, on one scene there is lots
of paper scattered about on the walls with
a picture of a dead member of the group,
the paper being scattered and chaotic
shows the representation of their lives.
Key points
- The women in the video are
wearing red which shows
seduction and love but also
they are wearing tight
dresses and clothing
representing the seduction
as hey want to be seen as
skinny and model like.
- Also, the mirroring affect at
the top could interpretate
the two lives which he lives
of drill and rap which is
backed up when he says
âIâm Risky Gee when I put
9. POTENTIAL SONG
The song which I would like to do is a drill song which
represents money and the âgoodâ lifestyle. I have
researched a song which is similar to my idea and it is
called Sticky Situations by Country Dons, I am choosing
this as it has inspired me to do a music video similar to
this as the shots which are taken are all intriguing and
the angles and focus of each particular scene are of high
quality and it refers to each part of the lyrics which are
being said by the artist.
10. POTENTIAL
TECHNIQUES
There will be a lot of zoomed in angle shots where the
camera will be focused on a lot of the expensive
branding and jewellary which is being used in the video.
As well as that, there will be scenes where some visuals
will jump out at the viewer and throb at the viewer on
each of the clips.
11. CONVENTIONS YOU
PLAN TO USE
The conventions which I will use is the camera work as I
will use different shot techniques to create a unique shot
experience for different scenes and it will also connect
with the beat drops and music. As well as that, there will
be close ups at certain points such as at the beginning
and end of the music video to set the merky tone and get
a feel of the close ups of locations and the people who
are in the shot.
Also, I will use clips with just words when the beat drops
off to create effect on the lyrics and to the viewer. This
will create a bouncy image for the viewer as on the beat
drop words appear instead of a blank screen so you can
vibe with the music.
12. MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
- I will have lots of flashy chains and watches which will
show the wealth and money which the artists have.
- There will also be the flashy expensive cars which are
also in shots.
- The background settingâs will be dark and mysterious
to give the drill vibe to the song with also block type of
flats in the background giving an urban, road feel to the
video.
- There will be a lot of close ups and different type of
shots used and also , in the editing I will use different
techniques such as for example, spiral effects or panning
to make the video more interesting and fun visuals for
the viewers.
13. SUMMARY5 opportunities of your ideas
- One opportunity of my idea is that I can experiment with the
location as if it is block type setting with the urban, raw feel to it
then that will be easier especially in York where it will be filmed as
there is a lot of areas that are block type areas.
- Another opportunity is this will show the younger generation that
drill music isnât all crime and violence, but it can help you as well
as some artists that become music artists ion drill come away from
the road and music is a way to express their feelings and views in a
positive way rather than using the violence.
-As well as that, it reflects on how the aesthetic appeals of UK street
culture are being harnessed by the disadvantaged in an attempt to
thrive legitimately in the culture industries.
-I will be able to practice my camera work better which isnât my
strongest fortay and this will help me find different types of shots
and skills which can be used to create better filming and picture
which connect to the genre of music I am doing.
14. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
- One restriction of making a drill music video is the types of props
normally used in their videos which will be very hard to bet hold of
as it is illegal such as guns and drugs.
- Another restriction of making a drill music is if its outside then
the weather conditions could be bad which would make it hard to
film in.
- As well as that, another restriction for a drill video is filming in
public places could lead to residents to complain about the noise
or maybe bright lights.
- Also, another restriction could be having the people who will be
filming in the video at the shoot on the day , which will need to
be organized well in advance.
- Finally, the last point will be saving the footage in multiple places
and backing it up as if you do not save it in one place you could
lose it or not find it or maybe not save it properly so having it
15. FINAL IDEA â
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Name of track / name of artist =
Brief biographical background = They recently became
big names in the UK scene due to their near 10 million
views track âSticky Situations.â They are from
Farnborough, Hampshire which is just on the outside of
London.
Links to other artists = They are like other drill groups
such as OFB and Section boys with the type of music
which is being put out but the have their own unique
style and the music videos are their own original feel to
it.
Genre info = They are part of the drill/trap music genre.
Country Dons â Sticky Situations
16. FINAL IDEA â TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
The duration of the song is long as there is a lot of verses
which are used, and the chorus is repeated a few times as
well. The beat which is used is very important as it is a very
uplifting beat with a lot of trap type sounds to tune with the
lyrics used. Also, there is a string type beat which plays
throughout, and the base gets louder and quieter at certain
points which grabs the listener and gives it that unique
sound to it which is different to other drill songs.
17. FINAL IDEA â YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
My video will be very similar but instead of the real, illegal guns and
drugs which are used in music videos I will substitute this with water
guns and sweets which fill in for the drugs. As well as that,
19. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
20. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
Summary of intended production
Detail here what you are going to make and the intended
outcome
Detailed breakdown of the music track chosen and your
interpretation of it [remember the questions in the
workbook, e.g. pace/mood/tone/structure]
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment
requirements
Include any details that you think [you could use material
from your pitch]
21. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access,
cost, weather? How will you manage this?
22. EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly
from college, but who do you need to speak to get this
kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
24. PERSONNEL
CREW: What is you team? Who is in it? What are each
team members strengths/weaknesses? When are they
available?
CAST: Do you need any external performers? When are
they available? Cost implications? Will you have to feed
them? Transport them?
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you?
27. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you âpre-visualiseâ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
ď Pre-visualisation and concept boards
ď Storyboarding
ď Shot list
28. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the âlook & feelâ
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the âmise-en-sceneâ
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
29.
30.
31. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
32. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.
33. STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
ď https://www.storyboardthat.com
ď http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
ď http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and
scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
34. SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder.
37. LOCATION INFORMATION
Information and images of your location[s] for filming
You should have address details, clearance/premissions
for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including
camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues and suggest
solutions
39. RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document,
you should evaluate if anything changes in production
and when you put control measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
41. CONTINGENCY
PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
43. PRODUCTION
SCHEDULE
Your schedule should budget a total of 10 hours for
production, that is for the filming and editing of your
project.
You should plan when youâre filming and how you intend
to use the in class days on your timetable/class schedule
45. CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of
your video must have a completed form
Blank forms are on Blackboard for you to complete and
insert here
