Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
2. Kesha Tik tok: Goodwin says ‘There is a call for close ups of the artists face. At the beginning of the video there is editing to show quick cuts of a party in black and white, this shows flashes of the ‘night before’ of the narrative. The first scene is shot in a very clean white bathroom which contrast with the ‘drunken mess’ kesha is acting. This video has a narrative of a party girl rebelling against her family and doing as she pleases. There a connotations with the outfits she wears as it is seen to be demeaning. :There is a link between the lyrics and the visuals, “brush my teeth” There are lots of quick cuts in the video to show the audience how she is feeling from the night before, the hangover! There are a range of camera angles are used but mainly the are low angles making the star look powerful. Her ‘family’ are dressed in a very classy manner to help show the contrast between there ‘daughter, it makes her seem even more rebellious. There’s a relationship between the visuals and the music- The plate drops in time with the music. The cuts in the video are also in time with the beat which keeps the pace up. In one quick cut you can see kesha letting kids have her bike which could have connotations of being a bad influence. The star has their own icon- Kesha has a drunk identity. She constantly seems out of it and unaware of her surroundings. There are sexual connotations when she gets into a car with a stranger and stars kissing his face, also with the dance moves she does and when she is being man handled. Kesha is wearing revealing clothes and is shown in a slightly demeaning way. In parts if the video it shows guys eyeing her up in a sexual manner and her smiling in an encouraging manner.
3. Pink- so what:The first shot of the video is a close up on a tattoo saying ‘void’, this is the beginning to the narrative of heartbreak and having an attitude to deal with it.Goodwin says ‘ there is a relationship between lyrics and visuals’. This is strongly shown through the lyrics ‘I just lost my husband, i don't know where he went’ and the imagery of pinks eyes being covered by her husband hiding behind her. The video is shot in bright Hollywood style colours. It has many different scenes and sets throughout the narrative. Her clothing changes a lot, between strong independent women into vulnerable, angry housewife, this goes back and forth. Pink moves her head to the beat of the music. Goodwin says ‘there is a relationship between the music and visuals. With in the video there are a lot of connotations with violence, she attacks a man and a car to let out her aggression. This also does show the pain in the narrative of heartbreak. There is one scene where she is dressed in a tradition ‘housewife’ out fit in a beautiful bright garden. She begins cutting down a tree with her and her exes name on, she has crazy spiky hair and is shot at a low angle to make her look powerful. Goodwin says ‘there is a demand for close ups of the main artist’ he also says ‘ artist may develop their own star iconography’. Both of these are shown throughout the video. There are many close-ups of pink’s face from both high and low angle shots. Also this video shows a lot of tattoo work and her own tattoos. This and her short spiky her and her loud attitude are her iconography. Some really nice editing is when she is talking to her husband and there are quotes from news papers about their break up floating behind them. In the video Pink does get completely naked but this is shown as a powerful women getting back at her ex-husband rather than demeaning women. But one of the last shots of the video is Pink in a corset surrounded by men in underwear having a pillow fight. This seems out of place in the video and seems to be put there just because viewers expect the see some sexual references. Goodwin says ‘There is likely to be reference to voyeurism, particularly in the treatment of women’. All the other scene’s cut in time to the song and fit with the narrative. Some really nice editing is between Pink and her ex. Quick cuts are used to show them in different moods with each other. E.g hugging, ignoring each other.
4. JLS- the club is alive: Goodwin says ‘particular music genres have their own music video style and iconography.’ This is shown in this R&B/pop video from JLS as they have choreographed dance routines, have an expensive car and are surrounded by beautiful women. There are also close-ups on gold jewellery to make the video look expensive and the stars rich. It is set in a dark club filled with a majority of women, all of them are staring at JLS in a desirable way. There are flashes of girls dancing in reveal clothes by stripper poles. Goodwin says ‘There is likely to be reference to voyeurism, particularly in the treatment of women’. This is more apparent in R&B videos. There are sexual connotations with the girls dancing in this video and is very demeaning. There is a massive dance floor where the group dance their routine while girls a swarmed round watching, this makes them look more wanted. The spot light is on them making them stand out. The setting and props in this video makes the club seem classy. It is all very expensive and rich and this makes the stars seem more important. Goodwin says that ‘There is a call for close ups of the artists face. There are many close ups of all of JLS’s faces throughout the video, they are shot form a slightly low angle making them look important and powerful. The guys always look confident and act strong and manly as this is the status they want to have outside the video. They were usual outfits that show there individual style while still slightly linking together. They are casual clothes but still look expensive. Goodwin says that ‘there are links between the lyrics and visuals’ this is shown when they are all standing by the bar looking at the girls while the lyrics say ‘standing by the bar, enjoying the view’. Throughout the video the group have girls constantly trying to dance with them or get their attention. The reason it is even set In a club is because its called ‘the club is alive’ Goodwin says that‘there is a relationship between the music and visuals’ this is shown in a particular scene when the DJ is edited to shuffle the music to the beat of the song. They have amazing editing in this video. There are lots of cuts keeping the video at a fast pace like a club. But also preset transition is used at different time throughout the video giving a flickering effect in time with the beat of the song and vocals. In the slower bits of the video layers of footage is used to link the band with girls dancing giving it a dreamy effect. The camera also does a lot of zooming in time with the beat making the room look as though its moving in time with the song.
