6 key features of a music
video
1. Music videos demonstrate genre
characteristics
0 There are a number od genre characteristics of house
music are applied to this music video.
0 House music videos generally incorporate or are
based around dance. That is a theme that is very
prominent throughout the music video, as where the
main character seems to fit in the most is on the dance
floor.
0 It has a positive theme as the girl finds herself in the
end of the music video which is also common with
music videos of house music.
2. There is a relationship between
the lyrics and the visuals
0 Although the narrative of the music video isn't directly linked to the
lyrics of the song, there are some examples where a distinct relationship
is established with the lyrics and the visuals. One example would be that
in the montage of footage there are often shots of the ocean, with the
main character on boats and other shots of dolphins in the sea and jet
skis etc. this is closely linked to the lyric ‘How deep is your love? Is it like
the ocean..’ .
3. There is a relationship between
the music and the visuals.
0 This refers to the idea that the tone and the visual are reflected in
the content of the video. This is very clear in this music video.
0 The music itself is very upbeat, and has a prominent dance beat
throughout that makes it a very feel good, uplifting song.
0 This is mirrored into the video, as there are shots of characters
dancing throughout and enjoying themselves, which is the feel
that the song gives off.
0 As well as this, the beat throughout the song fits in with the
editing of the song, in the sense that the beats are quick and
prominent and when the music picks up pace or slows down, so
does the editing.
4. Demands of the record label
0 The artist of the song is Calvin Harris who is a very well known
and successful DJ, however he doesn’t often feature in his own
music videos., especially when the vocals are female. Therefore
they have used an American fashion model and TV personality –
Gigi Hadid who would be an idol for females and would be
appealing to look at for males, therefore giving a good image for
the record label.
0 Throughout the music video there are constant close ups of her
as she is the main character of the narrative.
5. The frequent reference to notion
of looking – Laura Mulvey’s Theory
0 This feature refers to the theory by Laura Mulvey – The Male
Gaze Theory.
0 This music video supports Laura Mulvey’s theory as I believe that
we are watching the video through the eyes of a heterosexual
male due to the main female character being very sexualised
throughout and the lingering of her curves and sexual features
constantly in the music video. It uses a lot of close ups to
emphasise these parts of her. This is creating a voyeuristic notion
of looking to women, objectifying them for the pleasure of the
males and therefore supporting Laura Mulvey’s Male Gaze theory.
0 It also supports the three parts of the theory:
0 Men looking at women – the main female character is very
sexualised throughout the music video and is therefore
noting that the males will seek pleasure from this and
desire her. There are shots of her in see through clothing
and bikinis and lingering shots of her body.
0 Women looking at women – the main female character of
the music video has a very slim figure and is very pretty
(she is known for being a Victoria Secret model) therefore
will set an unrealistic goal for girls and may cause them to
have a negative view on themselves.
0 Women looking at themselves – the girl does often wear
pretty dresses and she always has her hair and make-up
done therefore girls can relate to her as girls often like to
do themselves up and look pretty and feel nice.
6. There is often intertextual
references:
0 This cannot be applied to this music video as there are
no intertextual references at all throughout it.
5 ways to analyse a music
video
1. Thought beats where you see the
sound
0 Structure of the song – There is a beat that is present throughout
the song from start to finish that gets louder in places to build
suspense when necessary and also fades into the background
more when stronger beats break through - for instance in the
chorus, but it is always there and it never changes the actual beat.
0 The Voice – As the disciples aren’t easily recognisable you aren’t
able to realise who the vocals are straight away and a lot of the
people watching the video will think that it is the model in the
video Gigi that is singing when in fact it isn’t.
0 Mode of address – The story is told through the point of view of
the main female character, and we follow her through her
journey of discovering herself through dance as we awakens on a
strange medical table with no recollection of why she is there.
2. Narrative and Performance
0 The song is based upon a narrative – the girl wakes up on a medical
table and has no idea how she got there or where she belongs and
she goes to several different places until she feels like she fits in. The
only place that she can fit in is where there are people dancing and
having a good time, and this is giving the message that no matter
who you are or where you come from we all connect through music
and dance and unite as a human race in that respect.
0 Goodwin’s theory is applied here as there is only a gist of the
meaning of the song within the narrative, and there isn’t much
relation at all which is what Goodwin says occurs in music videos.
0 There is no element of performance in this song however which
contradicts Goodwins theory as there is no way of the artist/main
character telling us the story through this element.
3. The Star Image
0 It is very uncommon for the music videos of house music
songs to include the artists, as they are commonly DJs and
they don’t have any vocals in the music tracks they just
create them.
0 Therefore the star of the music video is the music as this is
what they have produced and is what they are showcasing.
0 The visuals of the song and the quick and clean cut edits in
time with the music really add to the dance beats and build
ups throughout the song creating an uplifting, feel good
dance house music track that will be enjoyed by many
people.
4. Relation of the visuals with the
song
0 Goodwin says there are 3 ways a music video work to promote
the song:
0 1. Illustrating – using a set of images or video to represent the
lyrics and genre of the song
0 E.g. the reference to ‘how deep is your love – is it like the ocean?’
and having footage of boats and jet skis on the ocean and
dolphins swimming in the sea. The genre is house music which is
often played in clubs and at party's – there is footage of people
dancing in a club and people at pool and beach party's dancing
and having a good time which is relating the genre to the video
footage.
0 2. Amplifying – manipulating the meaning of the song and
drumming it into our vision.
0 E.g. completely counter acting the meaning of the song in the
respect of ‘how deep is your love’ and making it about who the
girl in the video is trying to find herself and us following her
journey. The meaning and mood of the song has been completely
manipulated and changed and we only see this point of view
once seeing the video. This is therefore an element of how the
production of the song are trying to promote the song according
to Goodwin.
0 3. Distructure – the meaning and the song and the genre is
completely ignored.
0 Where I agree with Goodwin that the meaning of the song has
been ignored, I don’t believe that the genre has been ignored as
throughout the song the genre of house music is present as it is a
music genre enjoyed by many different types of people in many
different social places like parties and clubs and as previously
mentioned we see these locations throughout the video.
5. Mise-en-scene
Location –
0 It is clear that all of the locations used in this video are related to
tropical themes and holiday destinations, where there is sun, sea or
dancing and people having a good time. I get the impression that she is
exploring a building she has woken up in and inside there are various
different kinds of settings that she is discovering and she is trying to
discover where she fits in. here are some of the locations used:
0 Medical Table
0 Club
0 Beach
0 Boat Party
0 Pool Party
0 Greenhouse
0 Tattoo Parlour
0 Top of the building
0 Beach Party
Colour -
0 There are lots of different colours used in this music video, but
dominantly it uses dark colours merged with brighter colours shining
through.
0 E.g. in the club, it is very dark and the walls and flooring are all grey
scale and the costumes of the dancers are black, yet the spotlights are
neon pink and the decorations are generally neon. I interpret this to
mean that through the darkness dancing allows you to feel bright and
happy which s what I think the video represents. This is also present
when she is on her own and is holding back her hair, there are special
effects of bright neon colours filling her face when her surroundings are
black.
0 We then get the contrast of the bright, blues and yellows we see when
the footage of the ocean and the pool party is used. This is instantly
uplifting as the sun shining of the sea which people relate to feeling good
and happy.
0 Adding to this point, when she is in the ‘green house’ there are bright
greens used and she is wearing bright red lipstick showing sexuality and
flirtatiousness.
Lighting –
0 Low key lighting is generally used throughout the dancing
scenes with brighter spotlights breaking through the darkness
emphasising that dancing breaks people out of the darkness.
0 I also think it has been used during the first part of the music
video to show that she is unaware of where she is and it is
making it mysterious to the audience.
0 It then becomes high key, ambient lighting from the boat party
and pool party scenes in order to portray a ‘feel good’ feel on the
audience. However it still refers back to when she is in a room of
darkness with a bright colour light/effect on her to reiterate the
mysteriousness in her, as well as the low-key lighting throughout
the building.
Props –
0 At the beginning of the scene there is a plastic bag over her
indicating she is being used for medical purposes, as well as showing
medical props such as scissors and clamps on a metal table, a
medical light and a medical wrist band.
0 Bright neon lights on the wall, pole, spotlights – creating a club
atmosphere.
0 ‘Tattoo parlour’ – needles, tattoo gun, bright neon light own all –
creating a mysterious and slightly scary appeal, instigating that she
is trying to rebel.
0 Motorbikes and smoke riding around her – showing a rebellious side
of the girl
0 Beach – bonfires, showering lights. Showing a feel good, uplifting
party on the beach with friends, everyone dancing and enjoying
themselves – linking with the faster beat of the song and the genre of
music.
0 Jet skis and a party boat – representing a luxury lifestyle and
showing them enjoying themselves in the sun
Costume –
0 At the beginning of the video she is dressed in plain white underwear and then
when she gets up she is in a yellow dress over a black bikini – revealing her cleavage
and accentuating her curves. This could be seen to apply to the male gaze theory
(coming out of the pool in the dress and bikini and it had gone see through,
clutching onto her body; taking her dress off in front of everyone and walking off in
a bikini.)
0 In the second half of the video she is then wearing a black dress that is backless and
slightly revealing on the sides of her body and is quite short. Again this can be
applied to the male gaze theory as it is accentuating her womanly features
seemingly for a heterosexual males benefit.
0 On the beach she is wearing a see through jumper over bikini - revealing
0 The dancers in the clubs are in short revealing clothing and one of them is dressed
in a bikini – creating a sexual appeal to the audience
0 The people on the boat are dressed in smart casual clothing – jean shorts and blazer
with sunglasses and they are all holding cocktail glasses i.e. martini glasses. This is
representing to the audience that they are living a luxury life and it is an everyday
occurrence for them.
0 The girls at the pool party are all dressed in swimwear and heels that are revealing
their bodies
0 The men in the tattoo parlour that dance around her are topless, wearing a bandana
and chain necklace which is showing that they are slightly more rebellious and on
edge.
Stars and Performance –
0 Throughout the whole of the video she has a very blank
expression on her face and this doesn’t change throughout even
when she is dancing. This is maybe suggesting that she isn’t
human or maybe that she is being reborn as she has lost her
memory and is trying to find her way.
0 This is also prominent when she jumps into the pool at the pool
party – it is showing that she likes to feel free and also that she
likes to be adventurous, especially when she goes onto explore in
a tattoo parlour and be around people riding motorbikes.
0 She is always touching her hair and moving it around her face
which is suggesting that she likes to move around freely – this
could be linking to the narrative of her only feeling like she fits in
when she is dancing.
