For my magazine, these are the
demographics of my target audience:
 AGE – 16-40
 GENDER – Both
 SOCIAL CLASS – E/D
 ETHNICITY – No specific ethnicity
HOW DID THE GENRE OF YOUR MUSIC
MAGAZINE ATTRACT THEM?
The genre of Rock is a very diverse one, but at the
same time very unique and distinguishing. As I am
focusing on a mainly younger audience, I have
chosen to create a magazine that is more suited
towards artists that are more likely to represent a
more youthful look and message for the rock
genre. A lot of young people and both male and
females like rock music. However, as rock can be
quite aggressive and ‘informal’ and my magazine
is for a younger audience, my magazine is
targeted for a lower social class (those who are
still in education or have a part time job).
WHAT IMAGES DID YOU TAKE, USE
AND THEN EDIT TO ATTRACT YOUR
TARGET AUDIENCE?
For my magazine, I took photos of BOA student
Ayeisha Siniara wearing a dark leather jacket,
fingerless leather gloves and dark makeup. I took
these photos in the BOA TV studio and used a DSLR
camera so I could take professional looking photos.
Also, I used an image I took of a stage at a gig I went
to in December, which was fully lit and had all the
props and decorations on too. Finally, I took a picture
of an electric guitar with some plectrums, a pair of
earphones and a beanie hat with the word ‘SINS’
written on it. I thought it would be good to take a
picture like that because it combines a lot of the
stereotypical conventions of the rock genre.
HOW DID YOUR CHOICE OF MODELS
CONFORM/SUBVERT STEREOTYPES OF THE
MUSIC GENRE THAT YOU CHOSE?
I chose Ayeisha to be my model because she is a very big
fan of rock music herself and I knew she would understand
the genre more than me. Because of this, the costume
choices were easy as she had a lot of what I wanted, and
she knew what poses and facial expressions to pull when
doing the photo shoot.
Ayeisha managed to bring dark makeup and a dark
leather jacket, whilst I supplied the fingerless gloves and
dark t-shirt. However, I was originally going to bring in a
microphone, but I decided not to as I thought my photos
would move into ‘cheesy’ territory.
Overall, I think my choice of models conformed stereotypes
of the rock genre.
HOW DOES YOUR COVERLINES AND MAIN
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD STORY ATTRACT YOUR
AUDIENCE?
On the front cover, next to my main cover line, I have listed
the story as ‘an exclusive’. This means it is only available to
read in the magazine and nowhere else, so all rock fans
would want to buy the magazine. Also, the cover line
‘Album of the week: Adam Lambert, Trespassing’ will grab
my audiences attention as Adam Lambert is well known in
my target audience.
On my double page spread story, the large text say’s ‘I am
having a brilliant time right now’. This mode of address is in
1st person which immediately makes the reader think the
article is an up close and personal interview. Also, there is a
lot of text on the spread which makes the reader think that
the story is very detailed and unique.
WHAT KIND OF MARKETING CAMPAIGN DO
YOU THINK WOULD ATTRACT YOUR TARGET
AUDIENCE?
I think my magazine would be best promoted
through adverts on the TV, especially on music
channels. As a lot of music fans watch these
type of channels, I would be able to reach a
large audience. I also think adverts could be
shown during televised music awards shows.
Finally, I would also have a radio advert
played on the KERRANG station as a lot of
rock fans listen to KERRANG as it specialises in
rock music.

Music magazines - Audience

  • 2. DEMOGRAPHICS For my magazine, these are the demographics of my target audience:  AGE – 16-40  GENDER – Both  SOCIAL CLASS – E/D  ETHNICITY – No specific ethnicity
  • 3. HOW DID THE GENRE OF YOUR MUSIC MAGAZINE ATTRACT THEM? The genre of Rock is a very diverse one, but at the same time very unique and distinguishing. As I am focusing on a mainly younger audience, I have chosen to create a magazine that is more suited towards artists that are more likely to represent a more youthful look and message for the rock genre. A lot of young people and both male and females like rock music. However, as rock can be quite aggressive and ‘informal’ and my magazine is for a younger audience, my magazine is targeted for a lower social class (those who are still in education or have a part time job).
  • 4. WHAT IMAGES DID YOU TAKE, USE AND THEN EDIT TO ATTRACT YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE? For my magazine, I took photos of BOA student Ayeisha Siniara wearing a dark leather jacket, fingerless leather gloves and dark makeup. I took these photos in the BOA TV studio and used a DSLR camera so I could take professional looking photos. Also, I used an image I took of a stage at a gig I went to in December, which was fully lit and had all the props and decorations on too. Finally, I took a picture of an electric guitar with some plectrums, a pair of earphones and a beanie hat with the word ‘SINS’ written on it. I thought it would be good to take a picture like that because it combines a lot of the stereotypical conventions of the rock genre.
  • 5. HOW DID YOUR CHOICE OF MODELS CONFORM/SUBVERT STEREOTYPES OF THE MUSIC GENRE THAT YOU CHOSE? I chose Ayeisha to be my model because she is a very big fan of rock music herself and I knew she would understand the genre more than me. Because of this, the costume choices were easy as she had a lot of what I wanted, and she knew what poses and facial expressions to pull when doing the photo shoot. Ayeisha managed to bring dark makeup and a dark leather jacket, whilst I supplied the fingerless gloves and dark t-shirt. However, I was originally going to bring in a microphone, but I decided not to as I thought my photos would move into ‘cheesy’ territory. Overall, I think my choice of models conformed stereotypes of the rock genre.
  • 6. HOW DOES YOUR COVERLINES AND MAIN DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD STORY ATTRACT YOUR AUDIENCE? On the front cover, next to my main cover line, I have listed the story as ‘an exclusive’. This means it is only available to read in the magazine and nowhere else, so all rock fans would want to buy the magazine. Also, the cover line ‘Album of the week: Adam Lambert, Trespassing’ will grab my audiences attention as Adam Lambert is well known in my target audience. On my double page spread story, the large text say’s ‘I am having a brilliant time right now’. This mode of address is in 1st person which immediately makes the reader think the article is an up close and personal interview. Also, there is a lot of text on the spread which makes the reader think that the story is very detailed and unique.
  • 7. WHAT KIND OF MARKETING CAMPAIGN DO YOU THINK WOULD ATTRACT YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE? I think my magazine would be best promoted through adverts on the TV, especially on music channels. As a lot of music fans watch these type of channels, I would be able to reach a large audience. I also think adverts could be shown during televised music awards shows. Finally, I would also have a radio advert played on the KERRANG station as a lot of rock fans listen to KERRANG as it specialises in rock music.
