Music Magazine Case Study What is a case study?
A Case Study Should Trace the history of the magazine Acknowledge accomplishments: major awards and important editions, articles etc Look in detail at one edition of the magazine as such:
Front Cover: What is the dominant image? Why, what does it show, who does it appeal to, how does it define the style/content/genre of the magazine? How does the image represent the person? What is the anchorage? How does this further define the target audience? What language is used and why? What colours are used? What are the connotations of these colours and why have they been used? What is the overall style of the front cover?
Contents/Editorial: How many pages does the contents spread over? Does it include an editorial? What sections are the contents split into? What does this reveal? What is the nature of the contents? What images have been used and for what purpose? Is there an editor’s letter? If so, what language has been used and why?
Advertising: What percentage of the magazine is made up of advertising? What is the nature of the advertising? Is there a pattern to how they are placed around articles etc?
Article/Feature: Look closely at an article or a feature. What is the focus of it? How long is the article – over how many pages, separated by how many adverts? What language is used? How are images used in the article – where are they placed, what are their sizes and what do they show? How does the article represent the people in it? Why? How does this then reflect on the target audience?
