2. What is it?
• Record label is a brand associated with marketing and
distribution of music recordings and videos. It also
handles the production, manufacture, distribution,
marketing, promotion and copyright. There are
independent companies and major companies, which are
often owned by parent companies such as Sony.
3. My artist?
• My artist would be signed to a major company as the
artist uses a popular genre that would be liked by many
people rather than a specific minor audience.
4. • My artist would be most suited for Epic Records which has a
variety of different genres, the parent company being Sony
Music Entertainment. It's one of the main labels of Sony Music
and one of the most successful ones as of the 1980's when they
were announced as the most successful label of the decade.
Artists such as Michael Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Eazy-E and
Pearl Jam are/were signed to this label, showing how much of
a variety of different genres this label had. The label's greatest
achievement was the release of "Thriller" which achieved
about one hundred million in worldwide sales, becoming the
biggest selling album in history. My artist will not focus on
just one genre as the songs will focus on the pop rock genre.
This will give the songs a variety of different tempos and
moods, making this record label good for the artist.
5. Copyright
• Record labels are responsible for protecting the artist and
their original work. The copyright holder decides who
can adapt it or benefit from it financially. It's the record
label that owns the song and may grant permission to use
it.
6. Disclaimer
• I have to contact the record label to request permission to
use the song in my project. I cannot claim it as my own
and cannot benefit from it in any way. I cannot re-sell it
myself and can only use it for my own purposes like in
this project, disclaiming the track.
7. Digipak
• After learning this about record labels and copyright I
decided to include a logo and a copyright sign on my
digipak. Moreover I will disclaim the track and create a
major record label to appropriately promote the artist. I
will make the digipak lively but not too colourful, using
only a limited amount of colours and signs that connote to
the theme of the song.
