1. Syco Entertainment
• Syco entertainment is a joint company that’s owned by both Simon Cowell and
Sony entertainment. The success of this company is very wide spread and they
distribute to many countries globally.
• The company is also a television house as well as a music publishing house.
• The genre of this company is classified as ‘Entertainment’ because there is a
mixed bag of artists that are often very family friendly so this could appeal to a
very wide audience.
• ‘The X Factor’ is a source of finding talent for SYCO and artists such as One
Direction and Susan Boyle have been signed which tells us that this company
have a very random selection of artists that appeal to lots of people, this causes
their company to be very wide spread.
• The company was founded in 2002 by Simon Cowell.
• The modern style of the logo gives the idea straight away that they would be a
company which releases artists that are aimed at a more youthful audience.
• The ‘Got Talent’ series has been a very popular show which has been released in
many countries. The series has been considerably more popular than ‘The X
Factor’ internationally.
• I think this could be a good company for our artist, depending on if we go for a
more family friendly route with the image that we give our artist. Although I
think this company may be for artists that are for a fairly young audience or
older target audience rather than a teenage audience that we have discussed
should be our sort of aim.
• This company may also not be best suited for our artist if we decide to try and
do an edgier sort of music video, with a more provocative sort of atmosphere
because it just wont be very family friendly.
2. Epic Records
• The parent company for Epic records is ‘Sony Music Entertainment’
• The company was founded in 1953 and is a very well established company
in the United States.
• They are based in New York which I think is a good area for this company
to be set in because it is right where all the people can be discovered.
• They promote artists such as Andree 3000, Avril Lavigne and Cher lloyd.
They also have some less well known artists which shows that they are
willing to take on more niche artists.
• The company is one of the three main flagship companies for Sony Music,
which is a huge company, the two other main labels for Sony are Columbia
and RCA Records.
• The purpose of epic records was initially to market jazz, pop and classical
music, although it did not fit in with the mainstream Columbia Records
style of music so it had to be tweaked slightly to become more of a
mainstream company.
• This company could work well for our my group’s artist because they
normally have very mainstream sort of music, that does stretch into the
pop genre and also for our target audience the artists tend to be
represented as fresh and young new acts, this is something we need to
think about and the cohesion between this label and our artist could flow
nicely.
• The feeling from this label is very youthful because of how the artists are
being marketed, even the title ‘epic’ gives the idea that the record label is
very big and this word is used by young people stereotypically so it shows
a more youthful sort of record label.
3. Sony Music Entertainment
• Sony Music Entertainment is one of the world’s leading music corporations.
• The company was first founded in 1929 under a different name ‘American Record
Company’ and they have gradually changed their name as the company have
grown to be a very successful company. The company truly found their identity in
1991 when Sony Corporation of America was bought out by CBS records and then
renamed to become Sony Music.
• The logo is very recognisable around the world as Sony because of the company
being so widely spread into other areas of entertainment and technology.
• Notable artists from Sony Music are Britney Spears, Paloma Faith, J. Cole, Ciara and
Justin Timberlake.
• The company headquarters is located in New York.
• The company has a number of labels but the main three are Columbia
Records, RCA Records and Epic Records.
• The artists for this company are often very mainstream so I thought that this could
be a good starting point for my group but we may want to choose a smaller and
more concentrated label.
• This record label is very easily recognisable and we could choose to have our artist
on this label but possible on one of the smaller labels leading off from Sony Music
because we may want to target more of a niche audience that is possibly aimed at
more of a British audience so we would need to think about the artist’s image and
whether the label is correct for our artist. Although Sony caters to many pop artists
so this would be a possibility, I think it would be a good decision to choose a
smaller label if we were going to release a British pop artist so that the company
has more of a personal feel.
